Okay a bit of fun here for us all. This is for all members not just the ones in the States. Does your city or State etc have a nickname? Nicknames that are somewhat opfficial or ones that you've heard anyhow. Now I live in Minnesota. It's is also known as Minneapple, Minnesnowta, and also Minnesobrrrr. Minneapple because of the arts here just like New York (Big Apple). Minnesnowta because of the amount of snow we can get. Minnesobrrrr because it soes get really cold here. I also call it Minnesober as there are a ton of Alcohol Rehab centers here. HAHAHA!

Hi Grandpa Bob,
We 'used to be called,' The City In Motion, due to the fact that GM was started here, many years ago, by a very famous Colonel in these parts. I did hear awhile back, that our name was going to be changed, but am not sure if this has happened yet. Interesting topic.

Austin bills itself as "the live music capital of the world." It is pretty hard to believe how many live venues we do have, not just bars, but coffee shops.
Its also called "Waterloo" because, well, because it was picked to be the capital and called Austin, it was called Waterloo because of a ford in the (Texas) Colorado River.

30 years ago is definately NOT what it is today.
Mind you, I pretty much avoid most of the music scene, its not my bag - my brother does it tho. SXSW is always around spring break, but it is also always in the middle of tax season (my bro's a CPA) so thats like the one BIG event he always misses.

I stay at Bangalore, India...which is also known as the Silicon city because of all the IT companies here. It's also known as the 'Garden City' (though it's more of a Garbage city now)...due to the pleasant climate and therefore all the greenery around.
It was also known as 'Pensioner's Paradise'...because lots of senior citizens decided to settle here when they retired due to the pleasant climate and not too congested city (which was years ago...now there's too much traffic and pollution).

I live in North Carolina and we are known as the Tarheel state. I didn't know why so I searched it and this is what I found. *This is copied from msn encarta* While time has obscured the source of the name, some historians believe it refers to one of the state’s major colonial-era products—tar—which was derived from slowly burning the stumps of longleaf pine trees. More commonly accepted is that the name came about during the Civil War. Some say the name may have originally been used derisively, applied to North Carolina soldiers who could not hold a position against Union troops because they had forgotten to “tar their heels” and thus could not stick to their ground. Others contend the name was applied to North Carolina troops by Confederate leaders as a tribute to their sticking quality during battle.

I also read it was due to the tar pits and the employees
were known as heels. Now this Civil War explanation sounds
interesting as well. Thanks.

I live in Mount Airy, NC. NC is known as the Tarheel state, I am not sure why.
My town, Mount Airy is also known as Mayberry because it is Andy Griffith's birth place and hometown, and it is the town the famous show was based on. The town really takes advantage of this fact, and downtown is loaded with shops like Snappy's Lunch, Floyd's Barbershop and Opie's Candy Store. It is very touristy.

That is quite funny Grandpa Bob.
My hometown was called "the city of gentle people" but nowadays, with crimes going up, I bet nobody had dubbed it as such.

Well I know that we have many that I do not even know. We are known as sunny California for our warm weather the majority of the year. The city of Hollywood where I use to live is called Tinsel Town and Hollyweird. There are parts of Los Angeles known as south central. I know of a few others that are racially offensive, so I will not mention those.

yes, my country is called singapura in it's old malay language. which mean lion city. sometimes people call it the FINE city because there are fines levied on people when they commit minor offenses. now these don't happen very often. no one i know has ever gotten fined littering even though there are signs publisicing a S$500 fine for that. there is also a fine for smoking in non-designated areas.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Cagayan de Oro is a beautiful place but it is very far from my place. It is like an island away. hehe..Here in my country, there are a lot of poor areas but Angeles City is more of a business area. However, there are poor areas near the city just the same. There are a lot of industrial establishments. If you are familiar with Clark Air Base, then that is where Angeles City is. Our country is beautiful but it is sad when politicians are corrupt. Take care and have a nice day! :)
