Is it Immoral to Download music for Free from the net?

I've often had this discussion with my friends here where i live. Some say it's immoral and a felony, since there are many copyright rights that should be respected, hence we should just buy the records in the store and that's it.
Others say that if they can get an album for free they won't pay 20 euros to get it.
I think both positions make sense, and there should be a middle point where we could find balance.
On the one hand, authors got the right to be paid for their creations, but on the other hand companies establish shameful high prices. They should insist in legal online downloads, and make it very cheap, i think that's the way, that and finding alternative income sources.
What do you think? is it right to download music from the internet, or do you think it's immoral?

I do a little bit of both. I do download songs, even albums sometimes. I don't think that it's immoral. But I mainly use the downloads to check out artists first. Truthfully, I don't have enough money to buy a cd, and then only like two songs on it. When I download something that's really great, I go out and buy it. If I don't like it, I wipe it off my hard-drive. I wish that there were a better "legal" way of hearing an entire album. Radio singles are great, but I think that alot of people would agree when I say that the rest of the album can be in a whole different ballpark.
I think that downloading is a great way to create a larger fanbase, and in most cases it leads to cd sales. But unfortunately, there are going to be the people out there who don't spend a dime on any of it.

First... when you pay 20 Euros for a record... the artist only gets 2 Euros.
Artists make their money from concerts... not from records.
Second... if it is illegal...
Why allow websites to have music online?
Why allow software to download it?
Why do service providers give us broadband with unlimited downloads? Ninety per cent of what you are going to download will be illegal. That is music and movies.
If you are not going to download those things... there is no use for unlimited speed and downloads.
For the cost of unlimited fastest broadband in Australia... $140.00 a month... I can go to the shop and buy either 7 DVDs or 7 CDs.
So... who is kidding who?
Maybe our ISP should pay for those illegal downloads... just an idea...

I download songs but we're always looking for older obscure stuff and thats the best way to find it. We also go to music conventions and look for stuff there. I see nothing wrong in downloading a free song every now and then but when people start downloading the new songs and never buy I find that totally wrong. We also buy new CD's quite often if there are enough songs we like on them to make it worth the money spent.

ha ha ha - bet you never thought you'd see me replying to your discussion!!! =D
Personally I don't see the big deal ... before the internet people were copying cds ... before cds people were copying cassettes!
Technically it's stealing ... but most artists that are continually downloaded are popular ones and make millions upon millions every year! They should be happy that people want to listen to their music instead of being upset that their new mansion only has 15 game rooms instead of 16!

hmmmm I agree with what many other people responding said. Cd's are really expensive.
DOwnloading certainly is illegal. Immoral.. well it depends it can be for some people and not for others.
I do not really download much music although sometimes I do.
IN my case I usually don't like more than one or two songs per cd. I don't think I ever downloaded a full album but I have downloaded single songs - rarely since I am not as much into music as most people LOL
SO I feel immoral for my few downloads? Not really. I also do buy cd's whenever I find albums that I really like. It's my - anonymous - to tell the artists that I appreciate their effort. Of course I would buy more if the prices were not that high.
I do go to concerts. I actually enjoy it more than to buy cds.
One of the thoughts that I find often is that some people seems to think that each download represents the loss of a sale of that cd, which is incorrect in my opinion. SOmetimes people would download a music and enjoy listening to it but not enough that they would buy the cd if they couldn't download.
Immoral? Not necessarily. I guess that we could also ask the record companies if they find the prices charged per cd immoral LOL

thanks a lot as usual arka!! Yes, they ARE expensive, i think that's immoral. I think that one immorality balances the other so in the end the status quo is best lol.

it is illegal in terms of copyrights.but i would rather download the music free from the internet rather than buying it.it is because the albums that have been selling is very expensive.i know it is not fair to those singers and all the people who involved to produce the songs.the singers also wanna get some profit by selling their original albums.
but if the production company are willing to reduce the price for the original albums a lot of people will start buying original too.they have to think on the consumer's sides as well.but if they are not willing all people will continue downloading free from the internet.it might be selfish attitude.but naturally humans are like that.they will think about theirselves first.

It's illegal, unless the artist approves their music to be downloaded, which in most cases they don't. It's immoral and wrong. I would rather just buy the music and enjoy it from there. So again yes, it is immoral.

Well the fact that it's illegal is out of any doubt, even though in p2p networks there are still legal voids and doubts. I was talking more about the moral part of the issue, but you clearly said it's immoral, thank you for expressing your opinion.

well, seriously.
it's basically like paying for gas.
The prices just keep going up and up and up.
I mean, I get that artists need money, but they have freakin' millions already.
People shouldn't have to pay that much.
If it wasn't for my stupid cable company blocking downloads, i'd do it tons.

I've been downloading music for over 3 years now and i buy more cd's now than i ever have done. It's time record companies cut their fat profits and pass it on to the consumer.

I agree with part of what you say, rooster...they should be less ambitious and offer more competitive prices so that people didn't consider the prices abusive. thank you for responding.

I don't think it is right to download music for free. The artist that do the music have a right to be paid for it. The thing about it they have such high prices on these things that if people can download it for free on the computer they will do it. I think that what ever you feel in your heart you should go ahead and do. Only you can know if it will sit easy on your conscience and it is no one elses business.

actually every music should be paid for that is royalty for the producer or the artist.otherwise, you can buy the cd and record the music on your cell phone.

Yes its completly wrong and illegal to download any music, videos or anything else without the owners permission, record company or whoever.
Look at what Metallica had to do. Many fans were upset that Lars Ulrich went after these online criminals as I like to call them. Metallica got a bad rap for doing the right thing. I love music, and think the artist should be compensated for their talents.
You can download as much music and videos to your cellphone right now, over 3 billion songs from my website. And pay a small fee for doing so.
thank you,
