The movie made an impact to all the thinkers of philosophy and science. There are a lot of what if's in this movie. What if we are just born and die and we were just a bunch of programs...

Matrix had Reloaded and Revolutions to try and resolve the main story. Matrix also had Animatrix which had the Second Renaissance (history of Matrix: from our world to the virtual prison). But you have your point; parts of the movies were there for symbology and for thinkers, philosophers and scientists. I mean, look at me for example http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1364499.aspx - Our world, like The Matrix? http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1345721.aspx - Whats good about The Matrix

The Matrix Online is the supposed continuation of the story. In actually there are three different servers and depending on the actions of all the players inside, the story is different. I do know the basic story however. There is an uneasy truce between the machines and the rebels of Zion. Now no longer at each others throats, the two factions try to forge an uneasy alliance. Unfortunately, tensions are hidden but present and the event of Neo's sacrifice is still an issue for both sides. Morpheus in particular questions why the machines have not returned Neo's remains (from Revolutions). Despite all of this, life goes on for the rebels (albeit without open warfare). They have their own cause (freeing more humans), and the machines have theirs (self preservation, regulation of the matrix) A third faction of rebel programs (Merrovigian, et al) are also around with their own agenda. Freed humans now have a choice of which faction they wish to serve. That means some humans remain with Zion, while others work for the machines, or for the rogue programs. The Matrix did have two sequels: Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions. There was even the Animatrix, the animated film that showed what happened between the second and the third films.
