The extra tax rebates

Do you really believe that giving all taxpayers a nice lump sum is really going to strengthen our economy? I really think until they get some of our decent paying jobs back, and do something about the medical and rising prices, it will only prolong having to fix the problem. Our money use to be strong and now other countries don't even want to accept it. That should tell us something.

I do think you need good jobs that pay a decent wage. The money back is not going to restart the economy because it will be used to pay the interest on the credit cards people had to use because of their wages being lowered or losing their jobs before paying for that sutff. If the business corporations keep outsourcing then the people in the States will not be able to pay for goods and evryone loses money. Also you shuold have a sort of Universal medical insurance, and the health insurance companies and hmos have to find a way not to disqualify people who paid into it.

I totally agree with you. Until they are working to solve the problem, this money is not going to do much. It is going to make the markets look a little better for a while, but it won't last.

I won't sit here and admit that I don't want the money. I would be lying my butt off. I do agree, all this is doing is putting a band aid on a really bad bo bo. Like you said if we don't bring back more jobs which would bring more money in people's pockets, which would lead to more spending. We need to do something about the rising prices of goods. Instead of seeing people on the news robbing banks, they will be robbing grocery stores for food. The saying it has to get worse before it can get better, well, how much more can this country and people that live here can take.

Well, the rebate will boost the economy a bit, sure. People will go out and spend the money. The problem is everything we buy is funneling money to China. The folks that started this upset are the mortgage companies that made bad loans and people that were taken in by their hype. http://homerenorepair.suite101.com/ http://yourwriter.blogspot.com/

I agree it will boost it a little bit, but I want to disagree with that money ending up going to China. I want to say people will use it towards bills, food and gas. I plan on using mine by putting it in my savings.Way this economy is heading, that extra money will come in handy. All honesty though, I'm dreaming, with most Americans getting money, they turn around and blow it on stuff that they actually don't need. I know what you mean regarding the mortgage companies, me and my husband was given one of those bad loans when we bought our first home. It took us almost 3 months to refinance a new one. Our payments are higher, but they could have been a lot worse.

If we'd get rid of lobbying/gifts some of these problems could actually begin to be worked on, but the guilty parties are huge (insurance, lawyers, etc) and so are their lobbyists/system of gifts.. The tax rebates will be a drop in the bucket compared to a universal health plan, which everyone seems to think will be a gift somehow materialized and supported by some (non tax?!) means.. I knew there would be an economic slowdown as most news outlets have been reporting it for seven long years now, and I do believe there is creative power in what we all think and say.. (and do).

No I don't! I think this tax rebate is just a temporary short term fix. If nothing else, it's just not enough money to be of any significant help. Instead of sending out checks for a few hundred dollars, I think our government needs to work on getting our trillions of dollar debt paid off. I think that would help strengthen our economy or at least put our country in a better financial position.

I am sure this will put us further in debt. I think they should start giving tax incentives to our American companies to come back home instead of giving them to foreigners. We would have better paying jobs, and be able to regulate all these products that are coming in and hurting us. With the prices going up, there is just no way, we can help by spending more, when our paychecks don't go up.

My husband and I were talking about these tax rebates this morning. I've seen all over the news how they want people to spend this money, but we both agree we'll put the money in our savings account.

I have listened and search the web but I cannot find where it will help people who are on Social Security get any help! All the articles cover people who receive pay checks! Have you seen or heard anything different? I am so interested in the medical coverage and rising cost of living. The USA used to be the richest and the number one country to immigrate to (legally), work hard, plenty of job available and achieve the "American Dream". Now all the big companies are sending the work to foreign countries AND getting HUMONGOUS TAX BREAKS!! God help us...ooh I forgot the word GOD is no longer politically correct in the government!

I totally agree, we need our jobs back. As for God, he is still mentioned in some of the government buildings. That is another discussion entirely.

So sorry I didn't intend to add/change the thread of your discussion. However did you happen to hear anything about SS recipients???

Not all taxpayers will be receiving the rebate. Upper middle and higher income people won't qualify. I believe if a taxpayer earns over $150,000 per year, they are out of the picture. This is what I was told by a tax consultant.

I imagine that the government hopes that we will all rush out and spend it frivolously, but if we are wise, we will pay off bills. That is what I will do. If the majority of people bank it, or they pay off old debts, then it will not be a shot in the arm like the people think.

Hilary sugests....40 Billion Dollars direct tax rebates(which Americans will soon spend getting debts under control). 10 Billion Dollars extending unemployment insurance. The devil will be in the detail for certain. Bet you won't know anybody who gets it.. lol. And a comparitively miserable 5 Billion Dollars for "Accelerating energy efficiency and alternative energy investments to jumpstart green collar job growth"... Isn't that Dandy? The best hope for alternative energy to wean off oil gets the smallest share of bribes for votes. Big Oil won't loose any sleep over these proposals, in fact they probably suggested the plan!! Yep, a cleaner future gets the smallest slice! Looks like MyLoters here are not fooled..... WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

You are quite right... It is a short term solution because they don't have any answer to the problem. It is a trick which has been tried in Australia in the past. They are hoping that everyone will rush to the shops and spend their lump sum in order to prop up the economy and create jobs. It won't work. Most people will use the money to repay their debts... rather than buying more stuff.

Thank you for the best response. It saddens me to hear what many of the people in the States are going through, losing their houses, and not having good jobs to pay for accomodatons

The way I see it many people are going to owe the full amount for their heating bills by the time they get it in late spring. It's little more than placing a band-aid on a major surgical incision. I have heard the Senate is planning on trying to get some more things added such as unemployment compensation extensions and heating cost subsidies so that might help a little more. We have to start working on our health care problem among other things or we're going to be in REAL trouble. Annie

while i have not heard of this tax rebate addition I can say that I do not believe it will booster our economy any - I mean where is the money coming from? is it not just a viscious circle? nor do I think raising minimum wage will help - that will probably just make more companies take business elsewhere and that is exactly what we do not need. if an american company wants to sell to american consumers it must be made that they operate on american soil and have american workers.. THAT will help boost our economy, responsibility in product to consumer, and all around good will and morale of the people.

This isn't a solution to the major problems in the United States. I don't consider it a rebate, as it will be used to pay my taxes. The only thing it will do for me is keep me from having to use my credit card to give me more debt assuming it arrives before I pay taxes. The really bad part is I will have to claim it next year, so I get taxed on this tax rebate. How can that really help people with a small business like me? We don't have the big tax deductions like many of the big businesses, who have their fancy lawyers to find ways to place money in other places. I think its a bad decision.

if we end up getting it,it will help but not the way the are saying. the way things are people are going to need it to get caught up just to get behind again. i know with taxes we use it to get ahead a bit just so we can make it to the next tax season. things cost so much now a days its hard to live. we just moved from ok to pa and the price of things here in pa cost so much more then they did in ok. i had a hard time food shopping because of the price of things. so all this money will do is help people stay above the water. its not gonna strengthen anything. just help for a couple months.

Although I appreciate the extra tax rebates I do feel it's like putting a bandaid on a broken bone - it's not going to fix the real problem. It's really sad for me to think of how the US has gone 'downhill' over the years but I'm not surprised and only expect it to get worse.

So they are cutting funding for schools and medical in California, but giving taxpayers extra money. That does not make a lot of sense to me. This country makes me sick sometimes. Maybe the government is really made up of cartoon charactors. That would surely make more sense to me. Sounds like they are taking from the poor and giving to the rich.

Hi, I completely agree, this economy-and country is so bad. It is so expensive to live, and you can't get a good job unless you have a degree or two. I hope whoever we get for a president actually takes some action to fix things around here.
