I have never participated in an auction but many people have,
some do it on ebay
let say there is a thing on you really really want,
would you bid at all cost for it, just so that you could get it?
would you buy it even if you know you are paying way more than it is worth,
how much more than that value it is worth would you pay, for example
if it had a retail value of 500, would you pay 500, 600, 1000, 2000
would you pay these crazy prices if it was for a charity?
do you set a limit and then just stop biding once you reached that limit
best answer will answer all these questions

I use to bid on ebay all the time. I haven't in awhile. I put a limit on what to spend for an item. I know how much its worth and i'm not going to over pay for it. One thing on ebay you have to be careful about is the shipping cost. Alot will charge outrages prices for shipping. ex. an item will cost $2.00 to ship and they will charge $10.oo. Now if its for charity I will probably pay a little more for it.

I did once bid a crazy amount for something. It was a decorative harvest loaf and it wasn't a great deal but it was way more than it was worth for a rather useless and indedible object! The proceeds were, however, for a good cause.
Normally I will decide how much I want to pay and bid up to that amount. Ebay makes that quite easy because you can enter your top bid and eBay will bid up to that on your behalf. This doesn't always work, however, because there are people called snipers who will jump into an auction in the last few seconds and top your bid by a small amount (which I might have been prepared to go to!)
I generally try to check the retail value of something first. Naturally, I am not going to pay more than that if I could just as easily get it elsewhere, even if it were for charity. I would much rather make a straight donation to the charity, really. I can see the (rather wicked) fun, however, in bidding against someone in a charity auction until the price gets ridiculous and then leaving the other person with the highest bid! [wink]

Hi
I buy and sell stuff on ebay all the time.
I set myself a limit and stick to it. You can always find it on ebay again and sometimes cheaper.
If it's for charity then i suppose if i had the money then i would perhaps bid a little higher but depends on what it is.
It's fun to bid on things and even better when it comes through the post. I use ebay alot for craft things that i cannot buy locally. You should try it, set yourself a target price and go for it.

yes i have been to auctions and have bid on e-bay for things . But if the price got higher than I was willing to go I would let it go.Unless I thought it was worth the extra money. For i have seen other people bid outragously on items that they could of went to the store and got a lot cheaper. Also at any and all auctions there are people out there that just runs uop the price on things that they dont want just so the other person would have to pay a high price for it.

oh yes, i have... and i make the biggest purchase ever in my life in an auction... that is my house that i am living now... i bought it through auction and i pay a little bit higher than what the price should be... but i don't mind as i really love the house and i never regret it... i have fantastic neighbours and great location... so yes, i am willing to pay a little bit extra money to buy the things that i want from auction as long as it is still within my budget...

Yes, I have been to auctions. I like oriental rugs. I go to the preview and examine the item that I want to bid on. I set a limit. I don't get carried away at the auctions. If someone outbids me I let it go. Since I am retired I am on a budget and can't go above my limit even if I like the rug. I have a pretty good idea of what they will sell in the stores used or new.

Yes, I have made bids on ebay, but I keep them reasonable. I would pay more than something is worth, though, if it were something I really wanted and couldn't find anywhere else at a more reasonable price. I set a limit on my bidding, and don't get caught up in the excitement of winning. I attend a lot of estate and self-storage unit auctions, and am willing to let things go if the price gets too high. For some people, though, it is the challenge of winning, I guess. They probably have more money than I do, anyway!

I have bought a few interesting things through eBay, such as records, and things I can't find anymore, and most recently I bought an espresso/cappuccino maker for my husband for a valentine's day gift. That purchse only cost me about $40, through eBay.

I've never participated in any auction (besides from monopoly ones)
If there was something I really really wanted I would look for it at the general stores... Why would I have to buyy it in an auction if it would be more expensive.
If it was for charaity...maybe then I woud think twice...but apart form that... don't think I would do it...

We buy a lot of items on ebay. In fact, before we buy anything we always check on ebay. For example we were looking for a laser printer and checked out different stores to see what they were selling for. Once we had a base price we went to ebay to see what they were selling for there. We looked for one that was closest to us and place a bid. We decided that we would bid up to the price of a new one and hope we would win. If it went above the price of a new one we let it go. We have never paid more than the item sold for brand new, and I for one can not understand how or why some people will do that. I mean you still have to pay shipping on top of the selling price. The printer we won was a brand new one that sold for almost $600 brand new in stores and we only paid $357 and that included shipping. I could not afford to pay some of the crazy prices even if they were for a charity. I mean I would make a bid early on when it was cheap and hope I won but would just consider it a donation if the price kept going up and stop bidding. There is a saying that charity begins at home and if I would pay some of the high crazy prices for some of the charity auctions I would need charity myself.

I guess it depends on what it is. I have not found anything yet that I would bid on no matter what.
would you buy it even if you know you are paying way more than it is worth?
Maybe a little bit more than it is worth
how much more than that value it is worth would you pay, for example if it had a retail value of 500, would you pay 500, 600, 1000, 2000 ?
I would pay no more than 10% more than what it is worth.
would you pay these crazy prices if it was for a charity?
NO
do you set a limit and then just stop biding once you reached that limit?
YES
