You know in my country the cellphone or GSM phone or handphone we call it, it's a very cheap. Only 150.000 rupiahs or about USD $17 we can have it. about 50 millions people from 200 millions people have. If you start you're activities without it , cellphone is unprimarily need. but for me, I'm a clerk, I used the cellphone since 2002 when it cost expensive, Cellphone is my primary need. All my activities exspecially my job, business need it. When my cellphone is broken, I just like a crazy man, I buy a new one and I have to... So in my country the cellphone is the important need.

It's necessary for me to have a cell phone. I have it for my business. Also in case there is an emergency involving my kids or family, people will be able to get a hold of me. I do some traveling too, and it's easier to stay in touch with my family while I'm on the road.

I don't agree that it is a sign of the rich and powerful! I think it is necessary for a lot of people. I suppose it depends on their lifestyle. My partner and I and my 8 year old son have cell phones but we don't have a housephone so it is important for us so we can keep in touch with people but I'm sure there are loads of people with them who don't actually need them.

A lot of people have them as status symbols, but that is not me. I really don't care to have one, and I don't, except that occasionally when I am on the road it would be nice to have one for peace of mind. My husband, daughter, and dad carry one but I am home most of the time so I get by with the land line.

I don't think it necessary for everyone to have cell phones. It's right that mobile phones are convenient when we call someone who is not at home or office. But I think the emergengy cases are few.In the most cases we can wait for the replies. And I don't think the cell phone is a sign of rich people. In my country, almost every family has cell phones,I mean in the cities. Though I consider cell phones unnecessary,I have one yet.I like send SMS to my friends.

Is it necessary to have a cellphone? No, not really. Necessity would be the basic things in life: food, clothing, a roof over your head, and good health. Is the cell phone the best invention after the light bulb? Probaby. Cell phones make our lives so much easier. We are able to be in communiation with the rest of the world no matter where we are. They are also the best thing to have on hand in the case of an emergency. (personally, I don't leave home without mine) Most cell phones and cell phone contracts are not expensive as they were when they first came out. Almost anyone can own one nowadays. I don't think the are a sign of power, riches or popularity status.

In some people lives..cellphone has become a necessity, specially to those who work in the cities. Even my father who is 71 years old and live in the province has cellphone and we find it very very helpful. Communicating hasn't been easier because of the cellphones. There are some though that buys more than 1 cellphone and buy the most expensive one to display thier social status in life.

I think it IS a necessity to have a cell phone. It can come in handy during an emergency, not to mention it is nice to have one when not at home, or even when at home. As I am on dial-up I use my home phone for my Internet connection and my cell phone is on hand so that my husband (as well as other family members) can reach me or vise versa.

In my country the cellphone is a very common stuff today. It seems that everybody has it. A cellphone doesn't show you are rich or not because everybody has one. I think we depend on cellphones so much. If we forget to bring it out, we will be worried and think perhaps we miss many important calls.

It is never necessary to have a material things since it's not a need but a want. But a cellphone would always come in handy during certain emergencies and situations. Here in our country, almost everyone has a cellphone. Wherever you go, you would always see one using his/her mobile phone. It is also a good way of maintaining healthy communication lines with family and friends. You can simply send them a message or call them perhaps.

mobile phone have certainly become a necessity nowdays its a grt thing given by technology but it is not at all necessary to have a cell phone its depends on the user and making fun of somebody who dont have one is simply childish and pathetic it is not a sign of rich ppl as even a lower class is also having one in a nutshell it is very useful but not a necessity

For me, its a necessity because I always go out and I wanna check on my two daughters relagularly. I maximize the use of SMS by asking the nanny or my husband if everything is OK. It's not advisable that you would be looking for a payphone just to get through your family. It all depends on the user right? My mom and siblings are also away from me and SMS, as now the cheapest way of communication is being used to know if everyone is Ok. I hate it when people forward messages. Though some are doing to make you feel that you are remembered, I still prefer a simple hello than a very long, nonsense message.

I find that ridiculous. Why deride a person just because he or she can't comply to the current trends? I know cell phones are convenient to have but, doesn't necessarily grant you "power" of some sort. You'll just use it like a typical land line, well, except the text messaging function but, your still communicating with it. The necessity of cell phones are its utility, not to show-off and base people of their stature on depending if they do or don't have one.

like you said, it is really depending on the place. Most people who stay in cities definitely will need a cellphone. Heck, in my place, most of the people here have more than 1 cellphone! 2 cellphones on the average. This is because, we have a telco provider which provide an unlimited call and text, but the signal is not that good. Therefore, most people will get one of it and one of the premium telco provider.

Not every person needs a cell phone such as high school and middle school students. They probably get them just to fit in. A person who does a lot of traveling and business may need one. Talking to someone is not that important that a person needs to use a cell phone while driving and put them self or someone else in danger.

I go to a Unviversity in the US. The college has about 27,000 students. Out of all those students, there is probably only a select few that do not have cell phones. I do have a cell phone, and I find it very helpful. I also use it as my only phone, meaning, I don't have a housephone. Is it necessary? Probably not, but most people have them and they are very, very useful.

Yes, it is a must to have a cellphone. Some families don't have telephone because everyone has a cellphone. As for me, cellphone is very important and keep it on day and night. My parents live far from me, so I keep the cellphone on in case they are ill and need a hand. My daughter is in the kindgartern, so I keep the cellphone on for her in case she has something wrong in the kindgartern. I am a fulltime working mother, so I keep the cellphone on for work in case there is something emergency in the office.
