Children normally are not aware of your economic condition until they are to teens. When their friends buy certain things, they also wish to have and they make requests to you. It is upto the parents to convince the children that
(1) it is not possible to buy now
(2) It is not required by them
(3) Offer to buy something more useful than that they demand.
It is not possible for fulfilling all the demands of children. A few can be.

Children need to understand that gifts are unexpected surpises, not their right. They may earn a gift by being wonderful for you, but they won't know what it is until you choose to bestow it
