Is Mandarin the common language of China?

Hi guys,
I am really in a fix whether mandarin is the language that is spoken commonly in china?If not which is the language of china??

there are many dialects in china.what you said is mandarin is the common language.unfortunately it is the nation's official language.it is also the official language of taiwan and one of the official language of singapore.some dialects of chinese are wu,taiwanese,cantonese,fookien,hakka and many others.

So to communicate with chinese people one should go about learning which dialect?Mandarin?

of course ,mandarin is the common language of China ,it is the official language of China.
but most places of China ,there are dialects.every zone has its dialect for example:london and wales,do you agree?
