I must admit something here. Some years ago, when there were no cell phones, I used to be able to remember any landline number without a problem. I still remember a lot of them. However, technology has made me lazy, and i only know two cell phone numbers!
The fact of having a numbers list in the phone makes me lazy and i don't even try to memorize them anymore, and i think it's all bad, because it's a good mental exercise hehe.
Are you good at remembering phone numbers? are you terrible as i am?

I can remember phone numbers once I see a number once its stuck in my brain. I have always been a numbers person. My hubby on the other hand can not remember a phone number to save his life! he always has to pull out his cell phone and search for a persons number. If someone asks him what his number is he is like "UH UH and then he gives the number lol.

It`s the same with me.Some years ago where i used more the usual telephone-i remembered all the numbers of the people who are important for me. Now i dont remember the cell phone numbers:they are much difficult to remember and i dont use them too often. It`s better to catch me online, my computer is on almost non-stop, so it`s much easier to send a message at skype or write email.

I am very like you in this regard Lightnin darling! If it is a number I call from my house phone I remember it - if however it is a number I only really call from my mobile I usually just press dial next to the name in the address book on the phone! Very lazy but so much easier! lol The good thing is if I need to phone the doctor, school or whatever I know the number off by heart! xxx

Before there were cell phones, I can only remember a few numbers....I remember having to write them down on a notebook and refer to them if I need to...
I'm quite terrible at remembering phone numbers, though I won't say its lazy....Having so many things to remember is a pain..

I know what you mean...now that the cell agenda allows you to save numbers, and considering the amount of things and codes we already have to retain, we tend to be lazy and just save it instead of using our memory. thank you for replying.

I'm awful at remembering phone numbers. I have all my phone numbers saved in my cell phone. I've also saved most of them in Outlook as well. I actually need to go through and update Outlook since I've gotten new numbers since originally setting up Outlook. I like to have Outlook as my backup in case something happens and I lose my cell phone.

the outlook idea sounds nice to me. I don't use outlook, but if you tend to forget things like i do then i guess it's a good way of remembering. thank you for replying.

I agree with you that development of technology makes us lazy.
I am a person who have bad memory. Many of my friends all know that.so i always takes it as excuse when i forget somethings.I seldom to remember anything.accordingly,i remember few phone unmbers.I even don't remember my own telephone nunber.i am laughed because of this.from now i only remember 3 numbers.my mother,my dad,my youngersister.i also depend on the telephone list.
But i also know it is not good.memory can practice and can improve if you try to excise.many of example have approve that.so now i try to be laborious, and recite passages everyday.i want my cerebra to be work more.now i think my intelligence quotient is worse than before.i have not do many of brain work now.but i plan to work it .

I am definitely like you! You're right, it is good mental exercise and at my age I need all of that that I can get, but I scroll through the phone book thing on the telephone to get to the number when I'm making a call. Of course we're not as likely to accidentally dial a wrong number when we do it that way, right?, so justify it along those lines and maybe you'll feel better about not remembering the numbers!
(I love markfly's comment about monkeys, by the way.)

When there were few people owning a phone, I can remember their phone number clearly. But now, as one can have more than two phones and all the numbers are very long, it is impossible for me remember them clearly.
And with the technology develops, cellphones, computers and many thing can remember phone number righter than you, there seems no need for your to kill yourself by that way.

As I don't have any cell phone, I think I am still able to remember phone numbers. However it is true that those kind of phones promote (indirectly) lazyness, because many of my friends aren't able to remember even their own phone numbers. I remember that when I was in an institute, our teacher began to ask us our phone numbers and one of my friends (who is not my friend any more, and I think has never been) didn't know his phone number and, as I knew it, I had to tell the teacher his number. This happened when I was 16 so we were old enough to know our numbers. However this is an extreme of that, this doesn't happen to all the people.

Lol.... I was just thinking about this issue a couple of weeks ago. I used to remember a lot of telephone numbers but now as they are all on my mobile I dont remember more than 5-6 of them! I think the volume of numbers has also gone up dramatically and with cellphones these days a lot of people keep changing numbers - making it difficult to remember them!

I used to really pride myself at being excellent at remembering phone numbers; in fact, there are still numerous numbers I remember from decades ago even though I haven't called them for years. However, you're so right about cell phone numbers, those are a whole different animal for me for some reason. Part of it may be that there are so many different exchanges now that didn't even exist before and it's not automatic to be able to identify where a number is located like it once was. Plus, as you said, the way we can save the numbers on our phones makes it totally unnecessary to memorize the numbers at all, which I think is unfortunate in the same way I think giving calculators to students in grade school is; we NEED the mental exercise or our brains get extremely lazy!

I don't think it's that hard to remember a phone number or lots of them. But people are getting worse and worse when it comes to remembering a number. I'm sure that it's because we can store numbers in our cell phones. So... after all I don't remember more than 3 other cell phone numbers. It's terrible, I know. Because when I need to call somebody and don't have my cell phone with me... then I just can't call them. Very bad...
