How Many Times

How many times have you heard, when going to visit a friend in the hospital, not to take potted plants since the plant will suck oxygen from the room itself? As a result of thinking the above is true, I didn't take plants. Now I feel like a fool..lol http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/flowers.asp

LOL. You are so cute. I usually don't take plants or flowers to people in the hospital anyway but not for the reason you said. I don't want them to have to lug all the vases and pots home with them when they get out. Usually I take them their favorite candy if they aren't on a diet or some scratch off lottery tickets if they like to gamble or a book the like or crossword puzzles. Things to take their mind off of being in a place full of sick people for a while.

Lottery tickets, now that's a good idea. But then you have to give them coins to do the scratch off..lol You have much better ideas than I've had in the past. I took chocolate to a friend in the hospital and I ate it....lol Thanks for responding.

FOOL! lol JUST KIDDING! Never heard of this and know w/o a doubt it's not true anyways. Plants take in carbon dioxide/monoxide and turn it into oxygen which they RELEASE back into the air. That's why houseplants are touted to be great air purifiers in the house. Now see, carolbee, had you checked with snopes first, you wouldn't be feeling foolish now. lol

yvmw...psst..bookmark snopes and refer to it whenever you feel something might not be true. I do that alot and usually end up replying back to the person with the link saying what they sent isn't true.

awe. I had to think about that one for a minute. But plants actually let off oxygen and suck in CO2. Thats why we are told to plant more trees to combat global warming. This will decrease CO2 emissions. I myself can be very gulliable from time to time. When I was 11 my friend told me I couldn't use her bathroom beacuse it was under construction. I believed her. After 1 hr of holding my bladder I asked her what to do. She said I had to go outside. After two hours she finally laughed and said she couldn't believe that I actually fell for it. Yah She was kinda mean.

LOL its ok I would probably have done the same thing. but normally I take them something crafty that I have made. Flowers die to quick so I avoid giving them.

Well, I had never heard of such a thing before reading your post. The first thing that went through my mind was "Who the heck said that? Didn't they take earth science?" You know how we were all taught that trees and plants take carbon dioxide from the air and put out oxygen. You know.. Photosynthesis. Green plants put off oxygen. I think that old tale was started by someone who hated florists or something!!!!

LMAO.. I just did an experiment with my 16 year old son. It appears he is learning something in school after all!Halleleuja!!!! I said to him, "Did you know that someone once said that you shouldn't take potted plants to a person in the hospital because they use up oxygen?" He started laughing at me and said... "Ha Ha.. Plants take in CO2 and put off oxygen! what idiot said that?" And I had lost all faith in the school system!!!!

LOL Never heard that one. Then again, I took a lot of biology in high school, so I'd know that's not true. HOWEVER they may not want plants in hospitals due to allergies, so I could see that line of thought.

When I was in the hospital, just diagnosed with asthma they wouldn't allow any plants or flowers because at the time the doctor's didn't know what had caused the asthma.

One of the main reasons I can think of for not bringing potted plants to the hospital is the lack of space to keep them. When I used to work at a hospital, we were forever sending the patients kin home with 'stuff' because there just wasn't room on the shelf or windowsill for all of it. Another reason for not taking plants would be that some people are over-sensitive to the heady perfumy aroma that plants emit. Even if they love the smell when they're not sick, sometimes the scent can increase their nausea, or give them headaches. Other nice things to do for a patient is to pay at the front desk for a daily newspaper to be delivered, or for their tv rental (yes, some hospitals still charge for the tv use.) Candy isn't always a good idea because they might be on a special diet (low salt, low calorie, etc) while they're in the hospital. Quite often just the fact that you've stopped in for a visit means a lot more than anything you would bring.

I've never heard that before. I don't usually take plants to people anyway though that are in the hospital. I don't know why, I just don't. If they are having a baby then I usually take them a bag of goodies for them and their new baby. If they are sick then I usually just take something that they enjoy like if they like to read then I'll take them a book, if they like a certain kind of candy or food then I'll usually pick that up on my way for them, etc...

We never heard of this superstition and have always brought flowers along. It may be I do not believe that flowers deprive the person of oxygen because even though I was bad at science, one thing I remembered was that plants breathed carbon dioxide and gave up oxygen. Part of the reason I knew this was that I read a lot of science fiction, there was alway a conservatory in the space ship, and it made perfect sense to use those plants to get rid of the carbon dioxide and add oxygen to the atmosphere.

No,that's not true, becauase plants PRODUCE oxygen. They need only carbon dyoxide,so puting potted plants is as a matter of fact a good idea.

I have never heard of that. I learned in science class that plants produce oxygen rather than depletes it. It's ok! I have heard some old wives tales before and believed them whole heartedly to find out that they were silly and could't possibly be true. It happens!

I have never heard of that. Plants give off oxygen not take it in. A plant might be a pretty big gift to take for the hospital. That would be better as a house warming gift. When I was in the hospital after having my baby people bought me clothes and balloons and flowers but the best gift you can bring someone in the hospital is some good food because hospital food is nasty.

That's very interesting that they would say something like that because plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which is the opposite of humans...and I believe it's that way for a reason. As a result, there's actually more oxygen in the room than there was before because of the plant. I like how you added the Snopes link that addresses this particular issue. Whenever I hear or read questionable information, Snopes is the first place I go! Good discussion.

i heard that rational just today.. LOL.. but anyway, our clinical instructors told us that the real reason why not to take or bring potted plants when visiting is that it might cause some allergies to the patient.. most, if not all, plants have allergens that can trigger attacks.. so to avoid that, taking out the risk factors might help a lot..

Wow. I never gave this a thought until now. I wander why the gift shops inside the hospital sell fresh flowers in pots then? That don't make sense either.

It's ok to take flowers and plants to a sick person in the hospital. The claim is false. I was told all these years not to take any as they would suck oxygen from the room. My mother didn't know what she was talking about....lol Thanks for responding.

That's not true.Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and not oxygen.Oxygen is their waste product and it's good to bring plants in the hospital because of that.In our country (Philippines)we plant trees and other plants among the road to combat air pollution.

Plants do not suck the oxygen. Plants are factory of oxygen. It produces oxygen and release the oxygen in the environment where they are potted. So you can take the potted plants to your friend in hospital. Remember that the plants suck the harmful gases for human health and pay back the oxygen in return. And oxygen is very important and expensive gas and a great gift for friend in hospital.

I haven't had a friend or relative in the hospital lately, but mom is going in March for knee replacement so will have to think of something to bring. I don't think someone getting their knees replaced is going to want to lug plants home...maybe chocolate cookies. If someone tried to give me that old wive's tale about plants, I think I would be compelled to set them straight. I love having plants around for air purifiers. The mold allergy created by having plants around is another issue.
