I must say that I go to extremes in this. For some things, i am a really good multitasker, whereas for others I'm absolutely terrible.
I'm good when i am in the computer...i can follow several conversations, read the paper, listen to music, etc...and all at the same time lol. I suppose that being a fast typist helps.
But then there are moments in which i go completely dumb, and everything distracts me, and finally other people have to tell me "wake up and focus just in one thing" lol.
So that's me, what about you? are you a good multitasker?

LIke you I am quite ok multitasking in some things and not so good in others. It also depends on what kind of stress I am having during that specific day and what is on my mind, but usually if something is needed I am able to focus in one or more things at a time even when my mind is racing with something else.

i think i am a good multi-tasker. like now, i'm doing mylot and also working on my blog and at the same time checking my friendster account. LOL. switching from page to page. there are times when i am playing the guitar while chatting with my friends (internet) and also talking to my cousins who come in my room to chat with me. but like you, there are things that i can't multi-task on. like when i'm reading a book. i have to put my full concentration in the book. can't do anything else -- or else i'll lose my focus.

I am not a good multi-tasker. When I did data entry, I could listen to a book on tape/disc and do my work, but don't ask me to try & hold a conversation & work. I can mess around on the computer & have the TV going, but if I'm having to do some detailed thoughtful discussion, I have to mute the sound...
So, I think what I'm saying is that I can do a couple of things, so long as deep thought isn't involved....

No I don't think I am a good multitasker at all. I need to do one thing after another and I need to be concentrated on things. I am way faster that way. If I need to do both things at a time, I would feel quite lost.

I would say from experience that I am quite a good multitasker. I can't help not being one, because in the company where I used to work, this term 'multitasking' is used very often by bosses, and we are expected to be quite adept at it, doing many things and handling multiple projects at the same time. In fact, multitasking is a common buzzword that has infiltrated into many things people do nowadays, even at home. Right now, I am sitting at home in front of my computer, typing this post. I am also keeping an eye on the stock market on another screen, reading my emails, searching for and downloading some images, listening to music, eating some grub and having the newspaper in front of me to read in between doing all these. I must say I need more than one brain and a pair of eyes to do all these at once, but I am used to operating this way given that I have so many years of training already. But I must say at times, I still need to focus more on one particular task if that task requires more concentration and attention to do well. After all, I am only a human and not a superhuman.

Yes...I think I am. However, after studying Buddhism among other spiritual teachings I was struck by how they emphasize the importance of being focused, present and doing things in mindful ways. So even though I used to pride myself on being a great multi-tasker I realized that it is unrealistic for any of us to be able to do a whole variety of things in a mindful way. So now I am endeavoring to do one or two things REALLY well...rather than a lot of things in a less present way.
So even though I still consider myself a great multi-tasker I will do it when I am pressed for time (or bored.) But the concept of mindfulness and being present has more appeal these days that scattering my attention hither and yon. I guess we all have to decide what works best for us!
Interesting discussion.

I'm ALWAYS multitasking! I can't seem to ever do 1 thing at a time. when I'm on the PC I'm checking websites or playing games and reading e-mail at the same time. At home, I'll let dishes soak, and go vaccuum an area, go wash dishes, soak, and go find something else. i swear i should be an octupus.:-)

I have to say that I am very good at multitasking. I have to be at times. whether its at home or at work. I think its just become a habit to me now that I am just used to having to do so many things at the one time.. :-)
