Red Tape Ranting: Do The People At the IRS Take Stupid Pills?

Okay maybe some of my friends here will remember the previous red-tape bullcrap I was going through with getting a tax earned income refund check that I was entitled to. I had started a discussion about my first "lovely" time with the IRS here http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1266968.aspx The story in a nutshell, was that even though my mother is deceased, as her sole survivor and personal representative I was entitled to any tax refunds that were due her. So the IRS did send a nice refund check to me but then I was having red-tape problems trying to do anything with the check as my bank wasn't going to deposit it as on the first line of "pay to" was my name, then on the second line was "The Estate Of..(and my mother's name). Well, my mother never had a checking account, and my account is solely in my name. Well it wasn't until I got a Tax Advocate working with me, and sent a letter that yes, my bank had to honor the check and allow me to deposit it in my account since the first line of the check clearly had MY name on it...so yes, FINALLY I was able to deposit the check...yipeeee..Now that was last year. So now we come to the other tax refund check I was entitled to...after back and forth, back and forth, and sending I don't know how many forms of documentations, not to mention filling out forms (getting to be an expert in filling any kind of forms..hehe) FINALLY I got the other check yesterday...I waited nearly a whole year of straightening things out with them to get this check.....uh BIG PROBLEM--the jerks at IRS instead of having my name first, my mother's name second did it reverse...that is my mother's name is on the check first, THEN mine...I CAN'T DO anything with it....I definitely have to now send the check back as "void" explain the situation to them, and indicate they need to change how the check is made out..that is to have my name FIRST I mean really I sometimes wonder how people get jobs..especially with the IRS...I mean do they take a stupidity test and the stupider you are you get the job? ...they sure want to grab your money when you owe them, but geez...if they owe you money you're entitled to it takes forever...To say the least I'm ticked off...I sure could've used that money....Now it might be another at least two month wait to get it settled. Has anyone else had inanely stupid frustrations waiting for money YOU'RE entitled to especially with the IRS and have to go through red tape like this?

The IRS Sucks! - irs company
Rant away! I have a different problem. This is not the first time I've had this problem either. They are saying that I worked at a place in 2002 waitressing and made 82,000! Imagine making that much money as a waitress? But that's not even the problem here. I never worked for the place in fact I was living in CA and this place is in MA ....and not a chain! How stupid is the IRS? One year they actually got my SS number wrong! Where do they get the people who work there and they blame computers...well people have to put the information IN the computer don't they?

yup my kids are there. They were charged over a year ago think 2 years ago for $800.00 someting and then the next year they paid it came out of the check they got So the next year the IRS tried to charge them the same amount again! So they gathered up al the paper work bank statements think it was the year 2004 or 3 not sure for I printed it all out on my printer for them took forever and lots of paper to do this too. and they keep getting letter from them and they take all the letters to the lady that is to fix this up for the IRS now owes them the $8oo something. and then they wrote a ltter that they would get an answer in 45 days this was last year! no other word was said from them. Now this year they have filed and are to get so much back and had paid for the next day to receive their check Nope they didnt get it now it will be 2 weeks they say before they get the check well they paid $400 something to get the next day one so this amount should be put back on the check less what the cost for the lady that filled out the tax forms. Myself I beleve they are holding the check out so they can collect the money again! and this would be 4 times they have paid that amount which really the IRS owes them! we will see

GOOD LORD ALMIGHTY IN HEAVEN! I can't believe they did it again!? That is seriously crazy. You'd have thought they might have at the very least flagged you 'account' there about this situation! I sure hope you don't have to another Tax Advocate involved this time too.

pye didn't you know that was one of the requirements to be an employee of the US government - 'Gotta be Stupid', don't have a heart, and be excedingly good at driving others crazy. I can't say I've ever gone through anything as horrid as what you've gone through with all of this but I avoid dealing with the government as much as possible because I know how they are.

Oh I'm sure they do it intentionally, they probably give lessions on how to do it too. Of course you know they are collecting intrest on that money while their NOT giving it to you.

Typical, this year as well as last year I was ticked because I couldn't claim my mortgage interest due to their stupid rules. Years ago, when I was married to my ex, we did our taxes and were to recieve around $700.00. Instead they sent us $1,700 saying that we made a mistake on our forms. Two years after that, they came after us saying we owed it back to them with penalties and interest. I did pay them back, but under duress since I felt that since it was THEIR mistake then I shouldn't have had too. My original tax forms were correct.

I ended up having to make payment arrangements there was no way I could come up with that kind of money, I believe it was well over $2,000 I had to pay back, although that was a long time ago. I sent them $25.00 a month for forever it seemed till it was paid. Now I have someone else do my taxes, so if there is a mistake either way, it won't come back to bite me in the butt.

OMG--I can only imagine how much more you had to pay in penalties and interest but due to THEIR mistake

To be honest, I think that they should do away with the income tax altogether. Think about it, you wouldn't have to pay in near as much as you do now, I mean if you make 700.00 gross a week, you usually bring home less than 600.00, well if they did away with it. You would bring home about 675.00, big difference huh? The only thing you would have to pay into would be social security. you wouldn't have to worry about this audit and red tape crap anymore. They are actually looking to pass a bill on this it's called the fair tax law. I would e-mail or write your congressman to get them to vote for it.

Yes, that would be a big difference if they didn't take taxes out, but can't help thinking if they did do away with it,they would only find some other "excuse" to take money out of paychecks..LOL

Is there a way to just have them to direct deposit it into your account? I think that would be the easiest way to handle things. You would probably get it faster. It is crazy that they cannot get it right.

I don't know about direct deposit..that WOULD be easier but knowing them they would still might put it under my mother's name and it would just bounce back to them

That infamous red tape seems to really be dogging your trail, pyewacket. I am in total sympathy with you. Neither do I understand how most of the people who get these wonderful jobs manage. I have not had to deal with the IRS but some of the other companies are just as bad. I believe this is one reason they all have automated systems set up now -they think they are saving you from having to deal with the incompetent workers. Anyway, I hope you will get a speedy resolution to your case and not have to wait months before they re-issue your check.

Another winner to deal with is Social Security right? And of course you remember all the red-tape I went through with them. I actually did call the IRS today and after wading through that wonderful menu, you know, press 1 for this, press 2 for that, got to talk to a real person after waiting something like twenty minutes and the person wasn't much of a help--plan to call again tomorrow...gee, I might get lucky and get someone with a brain

And to think, people always want to argue with me when I say (and most times bring sample proof) of government being stupid or slow. Pye, its government, don't expect much of anything good, instead expect repeated headaches like you described. Sample with the IRS using my case. Apparently I didn't send in my material in time even though I had the postal proof and everything. I had to send a letter with another copy of the related forms and had to talk to them about it. Fortunately it got settled, but it could have easily been much more difficult. So you aren't alone in this Pye. I do hope the situation turns out better for you.

LOL..we can also blame the postal system too, as don't ask how many times they make goof-ups about mailing things on time. Oh, yes, do hope to get this settled soon.
