I just made potato salad. I had extra potatos that I needed to use, so I figured why not?
I didn't want to make a special trip to the store, so I figured I'd just use what I had in the house.
I was only missing one of my usual ingredients...celery.
The rest I had. I use potatos, eggs, onions, pickles, celery, mayo, mustard and a little salt. I usually use greenpeppers as a garnish.
What do you put in your potato salad. What style do you like.
At the store I see NY style, country style (i think) and potato salad with eggs.
Do you have a favorite style?

I've never heard of baked potato salad, but it sounds delicious. How do you put it together?

Yes, I like the one with the egg in it!
Also I like the one they call German potato salad, I believe they put bacon in it, and mix mayonnaise in it!
I've tasted the one with celery, and it's good also!
Yes, I think I like potato salad!

I put in a couple of eggs that are mixed seperate with a little milk, mayo, pickle relish, and just a tablespoon of sugar. I also add a little mustard so it's almost like a sweet and sour dressing. So mine is made like a country style as it's how my mom made it.

Your discussion has just opened up a whole new world for me in potato salad, I never knew you could put so many ingredients into it. I always thought how boring it was and that was how it was meant to be so I never bother with it. But after reading what you put in and what responses you have had about what they put in I think Im going to add it to my shopping list next week!! In my local supermarket in england potato salad has potatos mayo and seasoning I think and thats it!!

Growing up, potato salad was somethng my mother often made for potluck picnics or for Easter and New Years. It goes great with ham! It is one of those "must have" side dishes for a number of occassions. Someone was always asking her to make it and if she didn't for some reason, somebody always voiced their disappointment. I have tried to copy her recipe to the best of my ability. It's pretty close.
I'm glad the discussion was able to open up that world of potato salad variety! lol

I use potatoes, eggs, bell pepper, celery, dill pickles, mayo, mustard and salt and pepper. I don't use onions. They give me a lot of compliments when I make it.

You make it the same way I do. I keep an extra egg out to put on top and I put slices of bell peper around the egg slices. Then I garnish it with papricka. Yum.

Ooohhh, thanks for making me hungry and giving me an idea! I also just noticed I have more potatoes than I thought I did so I guess I'm going to have to make some. I use the same as you do but if I don't have celery I'll use celery seed or celery salt. I like the idea another poster here said about bacon bits. I'm definitely going to try them in my next batch - which will likely be tomorrow.

In reading through the posts here, I don't think anyone has yet to mention what kind of potatoes they use in their potato salad. If I am shopping specifically for the ingredients for potato salad, I'll get red skinned potatoes. They give it a nice creamy texture - if you try it, you'll taste the difference. If the salad was for just me, I'd leave the skins on. But only if it's red potatoes. Family, I would definitely have to peel. . ..Whit

Most of the time I use the idaho (brown skin) potatos. I used those most of the time, but I do like the taste of red potatos too.
When my daughter was little she would never eat mashed potatos. One day I had the idea to make it with the red ones. She loved it that way. After that I made it with red potatos for a while, now she will eat them either way.
I think the red ones are a little sweeter.

I like my potato salad kind of plain. I like mine cold but my husband likes his warm. Yuck.
I only use potatoes, eggs, mustard and miracle whip. I will eat store bought kind with the pickles in it, but only if there are no onions. I don't like onions at all.

My daughter is like that, she likes it warm so in order to know if I have the correct amount of ingredients, I have her try it..:)

When I make potato salad I usually make two kinds at the same time. I make one with potatoes that I boil first with the skins on. When cooled I take the skins off and cut into chunks. I also put hard boiled eggs in it and celery and green peppers and onions. I then make one with mayo and sour cream and salt and pepper. I have made it with mustard, like you, but my hubby prefers that I use sour cream. I also make one with oil and vinegar instead of the sour cream and mayo. When I make the oil and vinegar one I put green onions and a little dab of sugar in the mixture.

Im not really a fan of potato salad but I figured I can tell you how my mom makes. I dont know everything she puts in it but she puts potatoes and eggs and whatever you use to make the creamy stuff in it.

Besides the potatoes and eggs, I use green and or red pepper, carrots (except when my daughter-in-law comes over),green onions, dill pickles or dill if they are not available, Miracle Whip or equivalent, dried mustard or regular mustard, and pepper, a little salt or salt free, cayenne pepper, paprika, and if available dill pickle juice.
I do not know what style it is, because I made this up myself and it tastes must better than the kind other people make, their's is lacking in taste.

i cook the potatos until they are almost mush and then i add a can or 2 of pineapple and slices of cucumber. i also add a little bit of pickles cubes and then leave it plain so people can add what ever else that they like. my daughter likes to have pear slices and apples with it.
it may sound gross but it is actually good.
