How long do you keep salsa?

I was just cleaning out my fridge and there is a jar of salsa in there. I really don't know how long it has been opened in there and wonder, how long do you keep salsa? There is no fuzzy growth on the top. Should I give it to my boyfriend with some tortilla chips to see if he gets sick before I take a bite? Or, just throw away and get some new.........

I would give it to your boyfriend first. Wait 24 hours for the food poisoning to show up though haha. I would throw it out actually. I used to use the fuzzy growth test too, but so many articles on food storage nowadays are telling us to toss out everything. Salad dressing in the fridge is another big question mark. whit

Oh dear, you are right! I have salad dressings, about 6 open bottles that need to be used up. We are having salad tonight!
Ha! My boyfriend will love that he is being used as a guinnea pig! I don't think I'll tell him, until it's all over..........

Never have to think about it....salsa especially Pace, never sits longer than 4-5 days in my fridge! But I usually say, when in doubt throw it away. Better to waste a couple bucks if you throw something "good" away, than to spend a huge bunch of bucks at the doctor or missing a days pay at work.

That's for sure! I'll probably toss it, I have another one I opened about a week ago that I have been snacking on, so it's not like I'll never have salsa again :)

home made or bought? Bought will be more acidic and will probably keep longer than home made, which will really only last a few days, either way,if you cant recall how old it is it might be worth erring on the side of acution and geting rid of it.

I'm thinking it has been about 5 weeks or so, maybe 6. It is store bought. Hummm, I'll have to make some home made sometime! Thanks!

As I think back, I think it's been in there since about Christmas time. So, I'll bet it is safe for both me and my boyfriend! Thanks!

Our salsa doesn't last long enough to worry about it, but for other condiments I do use the fuzzy growth/black growth in the lid test. And I check the expiration date. For something acidic like salsa, I would think that as long as the expiration date is okay and you don't see anything growing in there, your boyfriend should survive to dip another day. Note, to make something like salsa last longer, or at least to keep things from growing in it, try to pour rather than using a spoon to scoop it out. Even a clean spoon can introduce bacteria that will cause "stuff" to grow.

Good idea. I have done both pour and scoop with a spoon, but will pour from now on! I think this salsa is left over from my son's wedding rehearsal dinner 12/28. So, it should be ok, even if we did use a spoon :) I never let people double dip!
