Anyone tried the Mucinex treatment for fibromyalgia?

I have just been reading "What your doctor may not tell you about fibromyalgia fatigue" which is a follow up to "What your doctor may not tell you about fibromyalgia." The doctors in these books suggest a treatment plan involving taking Mucinex, as it somehow gets rid of the excess phosphorus that they think is responsible for the lack of cellular energy which they say is the root of fibromyalgia. Anyone tried it yet? I have searched other places online and seen several positive responses, but I was curious.

This is the first I've heard of this but I think it is worth a try! I'm in pain right now and meds aren't helping very much. There is a generic Mucinex also that doesn't cost so much.

I have found generic at Walmart under the brand Assured. It is called Mucus Relief. The active ingredient is guaifenesin. Good luck. Let me know if it helps. I never tried it. I've been feeling pretty good lately thankfully!

I have had to use guaifenesin now and then (what Mucinex is made of)and yes, it does set off my flares. Guai therapy for FM was first proposed by Dr. Paul St. Amand. If you research guaifenesin for fibromyalgia /St. Amand you'll find a lot of info. I know of no one who has stopped their FM using guai -- tho' I know many who have followed the protocol. You can't use anything with salicylates in it when using guai -- which is why those who promote the Guai Protocol say FM'ers fail: because of salicylates, which are in a lot of things, even toothpaste. If EVERYONE fails a protocol, I think it is not a good protocol; I don't think that all of the FM'ers aren't trying hard enough! If you want to have control of the timing of having FM flares, then use guai. If you are trying to cure FM using guai, don't bother. There is no cure for FM.

I have tried using guiafensen (Spelling), which is the Mucinex. I found that it did absolutely nothing for me. I may as well have eaten butterfinger bars...the taste would have been better.

I think I will research this more also, since I am allergic to the sulfa based med's they have tried me on. My concern is what long term effects the mucinex would have on organs, since the instructions say not to use over a certain amount of time, interesting though.

Mucinex is the Only Approved Guai for the protocol and you can get it in 600mg a tablet as thats what i take it has to be the Extended release bi layer ones too as the Dr has treated over 20,000 fms/cfs people and the one Guaifenesin that has worked the best is the Mucinex and th Dr has had people use other Guaifenesins brands BUT THEY WENT BACKWARDS AND IT WAS NOT WORING SO BECT TO USE MUCINEX!

I am also a patient of st Amand and his quest for curing FM in every human on earth..Mucinex is litterally the "expensive" version of Guaifeneson..which is why those who follow St amands protocal will ONLY take it becase it has NO sideeffects and is cheaper than mucinex..besides you would have to buy more mucinex than guai cause I am not sure if thee is a 600mg dose of it. Muucinex is an expensive version compared to Guaifeneson 600mg which is prescribed by Dr. Paul Amand who has been the leading FM researcher for 40 years..I am NOT a Dr. but a 10 yr patient of his and am well informed on FM. www.fibromyalgiatreatment.com The Dr. works in Marina Del Rey and has written many books and has had many interviews on 60 minutes news. See FM is a genetic "illness" brought by the kidneys in which they overproduce calcium and the calcium sticks to muscle including around the brain..symptoms like brain-fog, sensitivity to light, moodiness, achiness, etc.. are found to be extensively ongoing with a person who is untreated for FM. Please let me know if you have any further questions

We have found that any plain Guaifenesin works fine. People selling expensive brand name products will have someone on here saying theirs is the only way. We take it twice per day, and it lasts for 12 hours, so that works out fine. Most important thing any Fibro can do is know which version of FMS they have. You won't hear anyone but me telling that (or someone who uses this method). If your doc has checked your Thyroid and your temperatue stays about 98.6, that's the first info you need. If it's off, you need to get it corrected. Talk to your doc. Simple test you do yourself is be sure your saliva pH is about 7.4 That's normal. Any number lower means you are too acidy. Won't show on urine test, just saliva. About 90% of us are this version. Test strip on a roll dispenser is about $13 at some health food stores. Will do about 300 tests, so it's very cheap per test. The lower the number, the greater the symptoms you have. You can change what you eat, use some type of alkali if needed, etc. Testing saliva tells you what all the clear fluid in your body is like. Lymph, interstitial fluid, etc. Just no one knew to check this. This clear fluid is what feeds, rinses and lubricates all the cells in our bodies. If it's not working correctly, we have Fibromyalgia symptoms.

Call your pain management doctor who suggested it to see what dosage to take. Like I've said before, I've taken mucinex for colds and never noticed any difference in my pain.

I had never heard of taking Mucinex for fibromyalgia, but I've taken it for colds, and it didn't do anything profound that I noticed. I had the same pain. Also, they aren't sure what exactly causes fibromyalgia. Pain is just one symptom of many, and although I'd like to not have pain, I'd also like to have energy, not have restless legs again, remember stuff, and not have bathroom issues. I don't think mucinex would solve all that. I really don't think any ONE medication really can until they find the cause and hopefully come up with a cure.
