Has anyone seen this movie? I just watched it last night for the first time. Great movie, with outstanding performances (especially Richard Burton, who gave one of the best performances I can remember seeing in a movie). If you saw the movie what did you make of the ending? My friend thought that George and Martha couldn't have children so they made one up, and then George decided to kill of the ficticious child in the end. I think they had a child, but he died when he was younger and that's one of the things that's been eating away at their marriage.

Spoiler Alert. Anyone who is about to read this and hasn't seen the film and they think they would like to, Stop reading this post Now.Your friend is correct. It is softly said at the end. They couldn't have any kids and they made up this perfect son. But because of Liz's behavior all night, Richard "kills' him off. This was Elizabeth's second Oscar win. And I heard it was one of her favorites. She had to gain weight to play it and she had to appear older than she actually was. What a great film.

Don't feel bad. I didn't get it until I saw the movie about 4 times.

Yeah the more I think about it, the son must have been fake. Thanks for your response.

I also think this is a superb film. It's been far too long since I watched it.
Elizabeth Taylor is particularly exceptional in it.
It's not very clear if the child is real or not, but I don't think it is. I don't think they were able to have children and that when they speak of him being killed it's to do with George killing off the fiction.
