We are all users of different appliances. From the Television, DVD player, VDC player, cassette player, computers and other electrical appliances that gives us pleasure and in life. We all have remote controls to turn it off so there is no need to stand up and turn off this equipments. But if you notice once you turn it off there is still that tiny little red dot that will give you an idea that the power is on standby. Many people have neglected those tiny little dot, and despite having your appliance turned off already, it is still eating up power. A study has been conducted that if you actually unplug this equipments you will save up to 20 to 30 percent on your electrical bill. Usually I make it a habit to unplug my appliances and it actually saves you electricity. Do you do the same?

I think that it is good to use less electricity in your home. It saves money and helps the environment as well. I have just bought some extension leads that have red switches on. That way I can turn off the electricity when I am not using the appliance. I think that it would be an excellent idea for me to get a remote control. Thanks for writing this very useful discussion.

Thanks very much for giving me the best response. I am still saving as much electricity as I can and doing all I can to help the environment. This week I will get another energy saving light bulb for my lounge lights.

Yes, we will be saving the environment from using lesser electricity. However it is really difficult nowadays to adjust life without electricity since most of what we have are electrically powered. Yes, those red switches on the strip are very useful indeed. Saves you the effort from unplugging everything individually. Best to you!

I saw the commercial, reminding people to properly turn off their appliances and pull off the plug. That way, they can be sure that no electricity is being consumed. It was a very interesting and informative commercial. It really delivered its message very clearly. My husband, oh boy, should be the one they make an example of those people who forgets to properly unplug appliances. I do it all the time for him. At night, before we go to bed, I check every appliances. Making sure that they were unplugged. For one thing, this habit lessens the risk of house fires. I'm very conscious on how we use the appliances at home. And I think of ways to lessen our electricity bill. Makes it easier for the family budget to "breathe" easier.

I use "power bars"...so instead of unplugging your electrical, you just turn off one switch, and the power is completely "off." You will recognize lge. savings on your bill

My husband and I have decided to start doing this. We already turn out heat or Ac off when we're going to be gone for awhile. But anything to cut the electric bill will help!

Yes, whenever i see that red dot as you say I turn off all the switches. I need not take the plugs off, only need to switch it off. It surely takes up more power and that too just due to laziness many do not do it.

Yes, that can be done. As long as the red dot are off or not active, then electricity is not consumed. This maybe little lights and as we say, used only small amounts of electricity but given the time of 1 month and the number of lights, that could result to savings. I am glad your doing it, its very practical and will just need a little of your time.

I see. Well, you must have had a lot of money to pay for all the bills. Well, Its really great to use airconditioners when its really hot. The only downside is the cost of electricity. The thing is, here in the Philippines, the price of electcricity is quite high as compared to other countries in Asia

Yes, that is quite true. You thought that its okay already that you turn off your TV set or other appliances but if you notice, the red light is still on. Do you think its not using power? So obviously they are silent eaters. The best way would be is take them off the plug to insure that it not eating up electricity. Just imagine you have 5 or 6 of these silent eaters in a month, that would be a good savings on your bill.

Yes, I'm constantly unplugging counter top appliances. We have our electronics on power strips so we just switch one button on the strip every night so they're not eating up electricity all night.

I tried doing that, unplugging everything that was not in use. My husband had a fit every time he had to plug anything back in. So I stopped to save all the arguments from happening.

Yes, sometimes it can be a hassle but I think the solution would be is to have a strip and have a switch so that you will only have to turn of the switch of the strip and have everything turned off in one setting.

I do agree with you on that. Once unplug you can be sure that no power is in use and that it is completely safe from any fire hazards since no power is consumed.
