Here in the Philippines, text messaging or SMS is the cheapest form of communication and we are considered the SMS capital of the world because we are sending millions of text around the world.
in some countries, phone calls are cheaper but still, I wanna which would you prefer, sending TXT messages or just call your intended recipient?
For me, when I don't feel like talking to someone or my budget is tight, i'd rather send sms but if i miss the person terribly, who cares about evey cent I'd spend!

hi during college time things were different and there were many friends waiting for the SMS also the mobile plan included free SMSs but now in professional world I prefer calling a person rather than send a message and wait for the reply when both the call and SMS costs the same

There are times You want to hear the other person's voice, and there are times you don't have the privacy to say what you want..Texting fills that gap.I like text for short messages that don't need much in the way of a reply or just an ok to say they got it..though I find here in the UK,at certain times of the day, delays are possible in sending or receiving,so it can be hours later you get a reply you were waiting for..the choice is yours :)

I would text rather than phone as i dont like talking on the phone and find it easier to text and also cheaper as i get 300 free texts a month. The only person i have to ring is my dad as he has yet to figure out how to text.

Given normal situation, I prefer to SMS as it's less intrusive.
Unless I have to make some arrangements such as where to meet, then making a short phone call is a lot easier (versus several text messages to conclude on a final meeting place and time).

I agree that it is better to call people you are about to meet than to make arrangements via text. For me, phone calls are very important and should be answered immediately. I hate it when people intentionally "miscall" you or they just ring your phone but would cancel it after a few rings.

I agree that the intentional "missed call" or canceling after a few rings appear to be rude. Unless, it is genuinely "unwilling" on their part, such as when they are in an office meeting or during a corporate presentation, then i guess that's "forgivable".

I Think it depends..if its business related..of course i would rather make a phone call....When ur in situations when its hard to answer(loud, noisy envronment), its better to text message...also...some people are shy about sharing certain thoughts...therefore they would prefer teXting...And also..when u want to make a quick statemtn/say something to a friend/invite them somewhere without being stuck in a half hour/pointless conco...text it is!

Well, since there is a lot of competition going on between telecom service providers in our country, the calls and sms are as cheap as free. But that are too, on different packages which cost only once and the next time they're like as low as one cent USD.
But concerned to your question, I prefer sms most of the times like 80% when there is a need for any communication or something. The remaining 20% on occasions when there is some serious buisness or dire need of calling someone else.
I also would like to share that the sms here costs us only a mere cent and the call as cheap as only 9 cents a minute and that is what I call a true package. Apart from that there are many other packages which come around only around at 1 dollars cost and seem to offer a lot and that too CHEAP.
SMS R0ckzz...

There are only three cellphone service providers here in the Philippines and the government have made communication a source of income because we send millions of texts everyday and taxing it would be profitable.
I hope there would be more telecom companies that would invest here so that the supply would be greater and the cost of service will go down.

i don't mind both, depending on the person i'm talking to- i might either sms or just call them straight. for me here i think calls made during off-peak hours are definitely cheaper so i dont mind making a call. it depends i think. if you're going to have a "long" conversation with the person you're communicating with and there's many info to be told then it's best to get the message across by a phone call.

I never text message, and I get annoyed when people text me because it actually costs extra to add that to my plan. So, I always just make quick phone calls since I have plenty of talk minutes.

That's one great phone plan you have there! It would be abused if Philippine telecom companies would adopt that plan. Per second charging to phone calls are now applied here but you would still have to add some numbers to the phone number you will be calling.

Well it depends. I have a vodafone connection and it comes with various options. Recently I had a scheme where sms sending used to cost me more than local calls. In such a case making short calls was obviously cheaper. But then again when you make a call it hardly ends up remaining short! Nonetheless, I used to make calls then. However, now I have reverted back to a scheme where I have 300 free local sms. So no prizes for guessing which one i prefer now.

It really depends. I prefer to send SMS when the message is not really that important. I also send SMS as a reply to an SMS that has just been sent and doesn't require me to call anyway. But if I need to talk to someone regarding something important, I prefer to make short calls. That way, I can say more in a short time and get the response immediately or in real time.

I rather make short calls because texting cost me a little bit more than to call. I really don't like texting because I don't have a QWERTY type phone (like a sidekick or blackberry). But when I do get one, I know I'll probably be texting more.

I would rather make a short call than send a TXT message. My eyes are not very good, so I would likely misread and misinterpret the txt, however, I will get every word, if I can hear the person say what it is that they want to say.

I really don't feel talking too much over the phone that's why most of the time I prefer just sending SMS especially if it's nothing important and just requires a simple yes or no answer or something about where and what time to meet. But if it's something important, I prefer calling instead. I don't like sending long messages either so I'd rather cal the person and get my message through faster without the hassle of sending and receiving messages that can go on forever cos we can't understand each other.

Of course it depends how important your message is, if its ugent better call the person coz sometimes cellphones get drained and we cant tell why we dont get a response. good thing theres an offer here in phils charging per second no longer in minute/s-more value for customers -cheers

I am from the Philippines too and I agree that text messaging is the cheapest form of communication.
Personally, if there is an urgent need for immediate action for anything for that matter, I prefer to make short calls. Besides, texting won't ensure immediate action from the recipient. For example, if I ask someone to do something through text, I am not sure whether he gets to read the message on time or not. Even if he does, he can easily say later that he did not receive the text or that the message came in late or something.
I also send SMS from time to time. At least to send greetings to my friends. Or, send important messages to people whom I know would immediately respond.
