Is there any way to explain this disturbing dream?

Last night, I dreamt that a woman whom I did not know intended to kill me. What was really strange about this dream was that she allowed me to do nice things for her, like agree to clean house, etc. In spite of my good actions, the woman seemed bent on carrying out her intentions. That's where the dream ended.
This is the first time in a long time that I had such a vivid negative dream! At first, I interpreted it literally. That is, I wondered if someone indeed intended to kill me, and if so, why?
However, I thought better of it and decided that the woman and related events are symbols. Still can't think of any connections and am tempted to return to my literal interpretation.

Dreams are almost never literal......they are fraught with symbolism. I have very vivid dreams.
I would say you have feelings of being used/abused....you feel that people take you in, take from you and then hurt you. Or maybe there is someone in your life who you feel is doing this [it doesn't have to be a woman, but often women symbolize mother]
is your mom still alive? what kind of relationship do/did you have with her?

then either you still have unresolved issues after 22 years, or the symbolism refers to a whole other person that you think is trying to hurt you. but this really smacks of betrayal...someone who wants to hurt you after letting you do nice things is betraying you. is there someone you feel betrayed by?

It would seem you are worried about being hurt or punished from doing a good deed.
Some times, no matter how often we do the right thing, a negative result comes from it, and our brains recall this.
The woman would seem to represent a regularly innocent situation where you would do the right thing. The idea that she was intent on killing you is the representation of fear.
My guess is you have recently undertaken a project or given advice to someone with the best of intentions, but you fear it will come back to hurt you.
