Has anyone other than me noticed that most mylotters have seriously shortened the amount of time they allow for you to respond to their discussions? I'm even more aware of this since we started getting the myLot digest. I will go to respond to a discussion posted less than 24 hours before and it's already been awarded a best response. This has changed a lot from when I first came to myLot. It used to be that you would have a few days in most cases to respond to discussions. This makes me wonder all the more why they are even included in the active discussions. Has anyone else wondered about this?

Might be happening with other members. I've seen a few of instances in recent days. Not me though. Still have plenty of time for BR for plenty of discussions (and others that may never get a BR for obvious reasons). The discussions are still included because of a lack of a discussion lock/close. Also, there are discussions that are opinion based or asking for opinions on a subject. No need for closing in my opinion. Even the discussions asking for help or support, something else may come up with a new response that could further assist the author (even after BR was given).

Well progamer, I have so many unresolved discussions that I'm doing double duty just trying to keep up. I do try and give members a chance to respond to my discussions because I know it is impossible to get around to everyone in a day.

I have wandered how someone can actually choose a best response even if they only got one response to it. It may be a good response but there always seems to be one better some time later. Many members try their best to help others out ans they try to be the one who gives the best response. It is kind of discouraging when more members are not given the time or chance to respond. I mainly work nights online so I miss out on alot of the discussions that are made during the day to be chosen for best response. I am too late. I guess they are in the active discussions because alot of members are still responding even though a best response was already chosen.

I think so too. I think some of them may be always choosing their friends response for the best response. I think we get an extra 3-5 cents for every best rresponse we get chosen for. That small change would rack up quick and they could split it LOL.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, stephcjh, because I am not sure that some people are not being partial to their friends.

I've only been on myLot, actively, for 5 months. When a response hits me directly in the face and I really believe it's a good answer, I award the best reponse right then and there. I do have many discussions where I've forgotten about awarding a best response and continue to forget. Suddenly a lightbulb goes off, my brain is working overtime, and I go to the initial discussion and award a best response.

I certainly understand because I have the same problem. My age and a bad fall about 5 years ago make me a little senile....lol The increase in being forgetful only bothers me when my kids tell me I've told them sonething more than once. It actually hurts my feelings but life goes on!

I have a real problem with forgetting sometimes, carolbee, and that is why I have so many unresolved discussions now waiting for a BR.

Yes I have noticed that too. Everyone really should give their discussions a couple of days before rewarding best response. I usually give mine a week or sometimes longer. I dont its really fair because your not giving everyone a chance. So yes Ive wondered about that too! Good discussion!

Well I know it isn't in my discussions, I have been behind and struggling to catch up on giving out BR.. I really don't pay attention to one who gets a BR unless it is given to me, so to know how fast they are given out, I guess would get past me..lol

I don't particularly care who gets the BR, carmelanirel, I just think the discussions should be open for at least a couple of days before any BR is given. Once I go to respond to a discussion and see that a BR has already been given it makes me think my input would be ineffectual.

Yeah, I knew what you were saying, but even if they already have a BR I leave a reply anyways if I have something to say..Then maybe my response will be better and the person will regret not waiting...lol No seriously, I have seen even before the digest that some people will give the BR very quickly. Myself, I wait until at least 5-7 days, but like I said, I am behind, and now I feel like I have to catch up..:)

I have a question... If you do respond to a discussion and a best response has already been given, does it count? Altho if I'm giving advice to someone and don't see it already listed, I'm going to tell them anyway, whether it counts or not. B

Yes, Betty, I'm sure that your response will still count, it's just that they should allow a little more time for all who would like to respond to do so.

Well at time I have given the BR for the first or second one because they were so impressive. And managed to get plenty of responses after that .I think people don't mind responding to good ones in spite of their having the BRs first. What do you think please?

Well I should be blamed for the total opposite I still have discussions which are 3 and 4 weeks old which I haven't awarded best responses for! I have stacks of discussions which are sitting in my unresolved discussions. It is very very rare that I will give out a best response any earlier than 24 hours unless it's exemplary, normally I wait a minimum of a week, but yes I have noticed this too my friend and I haven't come up with a solution so will be interested if anyone does!

I agree, wolfie, because I also have a backlog of unresolved discussions. I take my responsibility seriously enough to read all of my responses and try to settle upon the best thought-out response to my post. I think this normally takes a certain amount of time.

Yes I have noticed this to I replied to one that was only written 8 hours ago and it already had a best Response I don't take any notice of best Response to be honest as I always say there really isn't one People all have their own opinions But you are right People are giving them out to fast now

well I haven't really noticed it before, I have always waited one week or for 10 responses which ever came first but I can see where having the dicussion in the digest would speed up the process

my system is fair, after a week people have had enough time to answer if they really wanted to, and after 10 responses is enough for me, I am not going to read through 100 hundreds of responses, I don't have the time nor would I even want to. for you do whatever you think is best,

Goodness, was only thinking yesterday how long was a suitable time?I have been officially a member of mylot for a year now,I forgot I signed up,then about three weeks ago I received a daily update.Had noooo idea what it was about, did recongize the user name and pass word so checked it out.In this time I have responded to several discussions, not too many responces coming my way,but hey you get that..lol Personally I was thinking a month was a suitable time, some discussions I have discovered buried which had been posted a month or so ago, I found them interesting,so I responded.Still trying to work out how to change my avatar, and how to access discussions I may email to friends. In for the long haul though, never too old to learn.

I have signed up for a couple of sites myself in the past, gandatwo, and forgotten about them, so I know what you mean. I can only speak for myself, but I like to give people at least a few days to respond to my discussions. I hate giving a BR and later seeing one that deserved it more.

I rarely mark a best response, simply because I forget as I move on to the next discussion. For those that I do mark early, its because I'm not getting much of a response and feel its safe to do so early on in the discussion. I really should go back and mark my discussions with best response, I just find it intimidating to read through so much material.

I have a system for that, kbourgerie. If I see that I'm getting quite a few responses to one of my discussions, I will go through some of them and rate and comment on them, then I will go back another day and try to finish them up.

I have noticed the same thing, world. I'm not sure that it really matters, though, does it? I think as long as the discussion is active as far as posters still responding it is still fun. I guess I just really don't pay attention to stats too much.

Maybe it's just my way of seeing it, blueunicorn, but the choice of a BR signifies a sort of ending to me. I'm sure everyone will not see it this way.

Worldwise, i feel you. Someone once asked why everybody is in a hurry these days and you are asking that too. I agree with you that awarding a best response should take a little time because all the responses have to be read and analysed. This is an intellectual exercise and should be given adequate attention.

You don't know how much I appreciate your saying that, sreamsong! If we're going to hand out the BR to any old response, then what's the point? I take it seriously when I go through the responses to try and be fair to everyone.

Yes, I've noticed this as well. Dare I add that it seems a token gesture as well because the "best" response is quite often simply a remark...hardly a well thought out genuine response to the discussion. That said, I don't put much store in "best response". I'm pleased when I receive it though. :)

I have many people respond to a discussions that I wrote months ago. When I came to My Lot they said that a post would be closed as soon as the best response was marked. I thought that mean it would disappear and No One could respond to it. I guess I was wrong.I have many discussions that will Never have a best response because they are purely a opinion poll. There isn't a best response.I also have posts where there isn't just one I like, there are many. Once I did read and deemed the best response only to have two other responses come after that were just as good or even better than the ' best response".If I read the best response and it has only been an hour or two of posting the discussion, I usually wait a few more days and see if there are any more people that want to respond and then I mark it best response.

I don't think it is the spur of the moment. It is like art. I know what I like when I see it.I will still wait a while to see if anyone else says it better but most of the time the best response Is the one I picked the first time.

There are several people that give quick best response and I believe it it cutting their nose off to spite their face. as for myself I wait at least a week and some times even longer before i give BR because one if you have given best response you may not get any more discussions because people feel you have lost interest in your discussion and will note rate them, I frequently answer questions that have been on here for a year, and do not really care about best response, I just like the question

I have noticed this sweety and I have to confess I find it surprising but it doesn't really worry me! I guess we all see best responses differently and some people like to get it done and out of the way while others see it as effectively closing a discussion. I don't remember seeing this happen so often when I first jpined the site but than again I don't take that much notice! xxx

Yes, I have noticed that many My lot users award a best response less than 24 hours after their discussion has been started. I also get the My Lot Digest and think it helps me see an interesting topic that I might have missed seeing. The discussion that Crush made was at the top of a My Lot Digest so I looked at it and already one hundred responses were there. It was a very popular discussion and understandably he had to have some ground rules like only replying to responses posted in the next 48 hours. I wonder if he has found a best response yet. I usually wait a week or longer before giving a best response and sometimes a few responses deserve this but there can only be one best response.

In some way, maximax, I was trying to convey that a BR denotes the best from a wide range of responses, so, it stands to reason that if it is given so quickly, everyone does not get the chance to participate on an equal footing.

Aren't discussions with Best Responses still included in the active discussions because this forum is about discussing? I've only been on myLot a short time but one of the things I most enjoy is being able to read discussions on whatever catches my interest, regardless of how old they are. Also, the older the discussion, the more likely it is to have a goodly number of interesting/informative responses. I like the information that is found here on myLot. Practical and tested suggestions for helping with a variety of problems or situations ... like ants in the kitchen. That was a good one. Now I'm going to do a search for mice in the house. So Best Response is OK. But the discussions are the real perks.
