Do you make things more difficult for yourself?

I hate dishwashers. In my opinion they don't get the dishes clean enough for my liking. Oh sure, they santize well, but you always have to wash them before you put them in the dishwasher or you still have caked on food. So, even though I have a dishwasher, I never use it, preferring to do my dishes by hand, which inevitably causes more work for myself. Is there anything you do that you could do more easily, but because of your personal preferences makes it more difficult than it needs to be?

I have a washing machine at home, and I used to operate this device every two or three days when my wife and I were doing the housework. But when I started hiring a maid four and a half years back, my washing machine was hardly used. My maids (my 2nd one now, and both Filipinas) all prefer to hand-wash the clothes instead of using the machine. I didn't know why, so one day I asked one of them, and she told me that washing machines do not wash that clean, and they prefer the hand-wash method. Sounds like what you experienced with your dishwasher. But to hand-wash, they have to stoop down for like half and hour, scrub the clothes and rinse off the soap solution. That can be back breaking sometimes, compared to the ease of using the washing machine. Since they prefer this way, I don't insist that they machine wash the clothes.

Yes, I figure that could be so, and they might be more accustomed to using this method for washing clothes.

Sometimes people from different cultures are raised to do things differently because they didn't have the conveniences that we have.

I saw that thing on tv recently. I don't see how it would get in the corners, but what do I know.

Yeah but but those robotic vacuums make great cat toys! I was thinking about getting a used one to entertain my Parrot when I have to be away. She loves things like that! Shalom

Ive always had a dishwasher till we moved into this house. Now Ive been doing my dishes by hand. And I hate it. And my husband and I are getting sick alot and I think its from the dishs not being santized. I use real hot water but I dont think its good enough.

The water at my house is very hot. I have to run it and then let it cool down before I can put my hands in it.

I just take my time these days and do what I can. I have had to slow down a lot and this has helped me. I am not as clumsy or able to multi task now which helps with my concentration a lot easier than it used to. I like not being in a hurry anymore.

When i was a kid, I always had to do the dishes. I hated it so much and used to beg my parents to get a dishwasher. They always responded with...we have one...YOU! Later on, I did some work as a dishwasher in a restraunt. Yes...it is as much work to use the dishwasher as it is to just wash them. I had to scrape the plates....rinse them ...load the dishwasher...unload it and put them away.I found the dishwasher to be alot more time consuming and more work than had I just washed them good before rinsing them. I don;t mind doing dishes anymore and have no desire to own a dishwasher except when I have so many dishes i'd like to hide them.

My father used to tell his friends the same thing when they asked him why he didn't get a dishwasher. He would tell them I don't need one, I've got 5. There was myself and four sisters.

My mother used to do that when we were little. Wash all our clothes by hand. Can you imagine handwashing dresses for 5 little girls?

I feel that all house work is more work than it should be. It seems as though once I start cleaning then I find more and more that needs to be done. I wish I had a maid. HAHA!!

Fraid not. I am just the opposite. I will go to an extraordinary amount of trouble to find the most labor saving device. I would far rather spend my time researching new and better dishwashers or scouring forums for advice on which detergent to use to get the best results than to stand there hand washing anything. Even if the dishwasher does occasionally miss a bit of dried on food or leave a spot on a glass, at least I know the dish has been sanitized. Of course if there is dried crud still on something, I scrape it off with a little baking soda and dump the offending dish right back in the DW to sanitize again. There is no amount of mindless repetitive labor that I am willing to do when a reasonable alternative exists.

I agree about dishwashers. I think the only good thing about them is that sanitize them for you. I would also rather do them by hand.

I have a lovely stainless steel dishwasher that I have never used. It is too expensive to run for just one person. I do not have enough dishes to fill it and make it worth running.lol I also wash my floors by hand. They just do not seem to get clean any other way. I have a lot of dry clean only dresses that I have found can be washed by hand and hung up to dry instead of being dry cleaned. That is a huge savings and the clothes get cleaner and last a lot longer. Dry cleaning chemicals are very hard on the fibers of the cloth. But that is a lot of hand washing. I wash all of my smalls by hand too and never put them in the dryer because that eats up the elastic. It also sets in stains. I guess I do a lot of things that could be done by a machine that would make my life simpler, but sometimes I enjoy the work. Shalom~Adoniah

I take nothing to the cleaners, because it is expensive. Also I just never seem to get around to going. I have a goosedown comforter that could benefit from being taken and I just haven't done it, although I really should.

Like you I also own a dishwasher but very rarely use for the exact reasons you state. About the only time I do use it is if I have family and friends over and there are lots of extra dishes, for example at Christmastime, but does it in fact cause more work because by the time you have rinsed, loaded, waited and put away you could have done the dishes by hand anyway! i agree that sometimes, we do tend to make things difficult for ourselves due to our preferences. no wonder my husband always tells me to do something an easier way but somehow, maybe it's because i'm too used to the routine or i prefer it that way, when he's not at home, i do it my way. grin. i put up a show in front of him, hehe let him think ok i'm listening to him. i don't have dishwashers here. i don't think it's worth it too. but i mop my floors as i'm lazy to go down on my knees you could say though i do scrub my toilets with hands. man that alone is tiring and it's not that big somemore. in fact, i just finished mopping the house and washing the toilet. i'm usually free on sun. grins but not for long anyway.

I do things exactly the same way you do, down to washing the toilet by hand. Its kind of gross, but I feel its clean that way.

And again we need to clean that one because we have to use that one again so this is my answer if you like give me response ok thank you.

Exactly. It seems to me you do more work with a dishwasher than you do handwashing. But thats only my opinion.

Yes..............clean my house. I have 3 boys as you may know, ages 12, 13, and 17. The 12 year old has the living room to do, my 13 year old has the 2 bathrooms, and my 17 year old has the kitchen and they also have their bedrooms to do and they take turns taking out the garbage. But I tell you, I do their chores more than they do it and that is because I do a much better job. Even when they do the chores themselves, I find myself going behind them. I love, after cleaning my house, looking at it and seeing what I did and the cherry on the top is me lighting up one my scented candles. They say if you want something done right to do it yourself!!
