i prefer a desktop because in a desktop the maintainence is easy and you can add additional features like an 3d card or extra ram.
whereas in laptop its not that easy to upgrade and the maintainence is difficult.
laptops are expensive.
There is only one main advantage of a laptop and that is the mobile part. You can carry it any where you like.
i think laptops are better for people who travel alot.

I don't know what I would do if I had to choose just one. It would probably be the laptop for the mobility, especially since I need it for some of the work I do away from home. The desktop is nice because it's easy to upgrade and you get more for the same price.

thats a hard choice to make. I like my laptop because i can easily carry it around and surf the web just about anywhere. But i like my desktop because of the speed and its better for games.

I disagree with the maintainence part for the desktop....Sure, you can add a new graphics card and extra ram...but when things go wrong, they are not cheap to replace either...Moreover, its not just the CPU, mainboard, RAM and hard disk that are prone to damage...There's also keyboard, mouse, speakers and your monitor...
Laptops prices are going down these days, so it depends on what you buy that determine the price now...Laptops are definitely more portable and the convenience is you can connect to hotspots wirelessly when you're out....For desktop, you need to go home to use it...

I have both, lappy and desktop. I prefere desktop though, as they are cheeper and are easier to maintain, but then again i really like my laptop because you can take it anywhere. But with my desktop you can leave it turned on at home, and then log onto it from anywhere in the world using a free web program. so i think desktop is easier =]

I used a laptop very few times several years ago and hated it. The keyboard was way too small and i just couldn't get used to it, and the little thingie that you used with your finger instead of a mouse - forget it!
Nope, strictly desktop for me.

I have never had a laptop, but i think it would be convienent to say the least. i could carry it around and use it where i wanted. Or sit on the couch where its more comfy. But for now i am content with my desktop. After all, its all i got, and i dont see myself getting a laptop anytime soon!

I am halves on this one. Right now, I want a lap top because my husband is listening to Harry Potter and I would like to go in the front room/dining room and start typing away on my novel or go on myLot, (after I get someone to set up wi fi) and go to the discussions. And it would be handy for when we go on trips and I do not have to borrow the motel's computer and I doubt they would appreciate me getting on myLot when the manager wants to do it himself. :)
But for sticking around the house, and having everything where I can see it, I would use a desktop, but I do not like the one I got, would like a Mac. wide screen, etc. at least 24 inches.

I don't know if either one is better than the other as they pretty much do the same thing except that you can take your laptop to any part of the house or anywhere in fact.
I have used both and found both userfriendly and even though we currently use laptops, I just find it more convenient for me now and I can take it with me to a coffee shop while my son is at school, or even when I travel to visit family.

Hi there anshnav! I would choose to have a desk top computer. I believe that most laptops are disposable because most of them has parts inside that cannot be replaced and therefore when you have a problem with one of its parts, what's left to do is to buy a new laptop.

i prefer a laptop rather than a desktop coz it allows me to use the computer anywhere i want. when at home i dont usually use the computer at only one spot so having a laptop allows me to use it anywhere i want, especially on my bed or in front of the tv etc.

For portability i definitely prefer Laptop over desktop. But considering maintenance i think Laptop would just cut out ur pockets while the destop would be a saviour in this case...Yes,i agree the use of laptop that u mentioned that it serves those people who travel a lot and constantly have some business assigmen to fulfill on time....

Desktop for home, laptops for work. I have a desktop at home, used primarily for gaming and storing data. My laptop is used primarily for work. It would be impossible to bring my desktop around the country for fieldwork. :)
Desktop pros: cheaper than laptops, easy to upgrade
Desktop cons: big!
Laptop pros: lightweight, small, easy to carry everywhere
Laptop cons: on most laptops, only the ram modules and hard drive can be upgraded; slower than their desktop counterpart.

yeah you are absolutely rite, that we can add additional peripherals into our desktop pc. and also maintainance is quite easy int these... But laptop is a laptop it means its a maintainance free machine (i think so)...
Well i also prefer a Desktop as i have to build some applications and do some gaming.

I have a desktop and a laptop, both of which I use regularly.
A desktop is very easy to maintain and as you have said you can easily replace parts or add components etcetera. There are also benefits with a laptop that make it well worth having. Not only is it portable, which is a useful feature at home as well as away from home, but it is also very easy to conceal if you are away from home for a long period.

will i.e. have both desktop and laptop and I personally feel that it is very easy to use a desktop instead of a laptop. Although I will not deny the fact that laptop is very portable but the usage is not that heavy duty as a desktop. When using a desktop we have a wider and bigger screens which is very much an essential. Then you have a big keyboard where you can type fast whereas in a laptop the keyboard is very cramped. And after that I have seen that the laptop tends to get heated up very quickly whereas you don't face that kind of problem in your desktop very easily. In one more important factor is why I would prefer dost talk over a laptop is then it is time to create it is very heavy on your pockets to grade your laptop whereas it is very cheap nowadays to upgrade your parts for a desktop PC.

I love my laptop. As long as I have a working laptop, I will never ever own a PC. I love being able to travel with my computer, and to take everything with me, from music, to important documents, without having to pack it all into an extra suitcase. With my computer, everything I want is right there at my fingertips, in one small convenient package.

I prefer a laptop and it is not because it is mobile or I travel alot but it is because it sits in my living room. I do not want a large clunky machine spoiling my decor so my nice slim laptop is just perfect.

A couple years ago when I was in college, I would've responded to this discussion differently. As of last October (2007), however, I must say that I prefer a desktop over a laptop any day! My decision is mostly due to the reasons you listed, but I'll go into a little more detail as my situation is slightly different. I got a laptop almost five years ago, which cost me $1,500. It had a rebuilt hard drive, so it had either had problems in the past or it was rebuilt "just because." I have no idea why, but all I knew was that I bought it, and it's my laptop. Fifteen hundred dollars for a laptop back then was a whole lot of money...and still is for that matter. It had a 60 GB hard drive, which was the biggest you could buy in a laptop back then. I know you're probably laughing, but I had top-of-the-line stuff back then! You're going to laugh when you read this, too, but my laptop not only doesn't have a built-in webcam or wireless card, but it has a floppy drive that I haven't used in about two years! Ugh...I look at it as a pathetic piece of worthlessnses, but at least I got my use out of it in college during which it crashed at least three times (when I needed it the most, of course). Laptops are so specific that, as you said, they're so hard to repair and personalize. If you want everything "your way," just buy a Dell laptop (or so I've heard since I've never bought a computer from Dell). Last October, I bought a desktop computer for $750, half what I paid for my laptop five years ago! This in and of itself was amazing, but wait until you read what my new computer has. It came with a 22-inch, Bright View, Widescreen, Flat-panel, LCD monitor. It's gorgeous and one of my favorite parts about the computer. That by itself is a $400 or $500 screen. The keyboard and (corded) mouse aren't anything special, but the computer has a 320 GB hard drive with a dual core processor. I can burn and Light Scribe two-sided CDs and DVDs. It's got Media Center and Windows Vista Premium with 3 GB RAM. It's the best thing since sliced bread to me! I've had it a little over six months, and I'm still finding new things about it. I'm addicted to that thing! (LOL) I also know how to upgrade the CPU should I need to do that anytime soon. It's got some pretty impressive specs right now, but desktops are so much easier to repair and upgrade. I'd definitely go with your answer and agree with your reasoning completely. Great discussion!

I can see where your coming from, i used to have a desk top, but did not have enough space in my bedroom for it, so it was always in the dining room. When my parents wanted to eat etc. i could not use it, i have now got a laptop and so glad about this. I don't donwload stuff as it's illegal anyway. As long as i can use it for basic things for my crafts etc. then that's great
Can i ask what you use it for? do you download lots of things? if you only use it for basic things why do you need all this wonderful stuff on your PC.
I really love my Laptop as i can sit in bed in the mornings or evenings before i go to bed and relax. It's great. Desk top far to uncomfortable now

Hi, Aqua! Great questions and thanks for asking. Don't get me wrong, I loved my laptop also. I still have it and it works great whenever I need the mobility and flexibility. It's really slow and outdated, of course. I use my desktop for EVERYTHING, absolutely everything. I keep my contact information for everyone I know in there. I have at least three e-mail addresses for various reasons that I use. My desktop is always connected to the Internet, so everything associated with the Internet I do on my desktop. I also do all of my banking online. I write documents whenever necessary, I keep an updated "wish list" for myself on there, I chat with friends and family, I chat with my fiance on there, and I even have a video webcam that I can see other people on the screen with. I like my desktop because I have a nice little computer desk that has all the space I need to keep my desktop there as well as have enough room to use my desk for other things. The reason I need so my hard drive space on my computer is because I have millions of digital pictures on my hard drive from my digital camera. I also have digital videos from my camera on there. I have thousands of songs on there since I like to listen to music on my computer while I work as well. My computer is my very own, and no one else has ever used it but me. I know it may sound a bit selfish, but I bought it so I'm entitled to being selfish! Everyone else in my family has their own laptop or desktop and there are a couple "community desktops" that everyone can use. I have my printer and scanner hooked up to my computer also. I can scan images onto my computer and print whatever I want, including photos to put in frames all over my room. There are so many things I use my computer for that I can't even remember to be able to list them all. I think you get the picture, though! Oh, one thing I forgot is that I have one particular PC game that I absolutely love playing on my computer when I have time. It's called The Sims 2. You've probably heard of it. The game is very demanding. It takes a really good graphics card, lots of hard drive space, and lots of RAM to be able to run properly. My new computer runs this program like it's a piece of cake. It runs so smooth and fast! The screen quality with colors and images on the game is amazing! If you've ever seen or played that game, you know exactly what I'm talking about. I hope that answers your questions.
