depends.... if you ONLY want to point and shoot, then a P'n'S camera is the right thing for you. If you prefer the next level, then a DSLR is what you need. You must take in consideration other factors, as budget available to spend on PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT (which does NOT mean only a camera), what are you goin' to use it for (if you wanna make some money with your camera, you NEED a DSLR), et cetera.
I would recommend a DSLR, because you never know when you want to take that step to the next level, and, it's better to have the "material" to do it. A DSLR has an auto function, too, so you won't need to worry (too much) about not knowing to take pictures.
cheers.

I own a DSLR Canon Rebel, An Advanced Point and Shoot Canon S5, and a Canon Powershot A530. Which camera I use depends upon the situation. For most of my professional work I use the Canon Rebel. It gives me a quicker response in taking pictures and a larger selection of lens to use. I use the Canon S5 for travel when it is important to have a smaller camera with a large range of effects and a large zoom lens. When I just need a small carry around camera or when I am teaching my grand daughters photography.
My suggestion is to look at what is important to you in a camera. What type of photography do you want to do. How and when are you going to use the camera. A good place to check out cameras is www.dpreview.com They have excellent reviews and the lates news and good forums for you to check out.
You can get some excellent photos with a good point and shoot camera. The DSLR like cameras are also very good for many things and will challenge you skills. Good luck

Not necessarily,i think the other comments suggest a better route,I know some serious photographers who prefer point and shoot cameras,so i think the best answer is that,it depends on what type of image you want, what you want the image for and where you are shooting. For example, there are people who are hunting down the last of the polaroid cameras and film becasue they like the quality and "instant" experience.
