What was the scariest thing that woke you from your sleep? Perhaps it wasn't scary, it just jarred you from a deep slumber. I would have to say when I woke up one morning and a dog rear was in my face, that would have been the scariest thing. It took me about ten seconds to idenitify what it was I was staring at in the dark, without contacts or glasses. I felt something on my nose, and there it was!
What about you?

Well it wasn't really scary, yet it was if you get my meaning. Now this was some years ago, when my mother was still alive. I've always been a night owl and go to bed late, so consequently get up late. Well I'm the type that when I'm asleep you nearly have to detonate a bomb next to me to get me up...I just get up naturally without any alarm clocks or anything. So one morning, here I am still sound asleep, it must have been around 10:30 in the morning (uh, no don't ask when I so eventually get up..LOL) Well like I said, nothing will wake me up unless I sense some kind of danger. Sure enough, this one morning...WHAM...I'm wide awake...now I'm fogged eyed too (near sighted) but foggy vision or not, I could see the apartment was all smokey...I leapt out of bed..My mother was sitting up on the sofa, sound asleep....she had fallen asleep sitting up (her favorite "pose")--what was causing the smoke---the jerk, and yes, my mother was one, had started chicken soup for the cats...this was when we still had a lot of cats and to stretch things out we made a cat version of chicken soup...so my mother thought she was doing me a favor by getting a head start and had filled a large stock pot with water and put chicken in it to cook it...Well the reason it was burning? The water had completely boiled down to nothing, and the chicken was a charcoal mess, completely black and burning...geez...sooner or later that could have been a bondafide fire! Don't ask HOW many times my mother did this catastrophe...did the same thing when one time I was out...as I came home and was walking up the steps to the second floor where my apt is, I thought, gee, it smells like there's a fire in the building..sure enough open the door and the apt was so dense with smoke one could hardly see...and there she was on the sofa..sound asleep...Yikes. Honestly it's a wonder my mother didn't give me heart attacks with the crap I went through!

ambie the REAL scary part is that my mother's mental state was so bad, she really didn't realize she had done anything wrong and thought I was the wacko one when I was yelling at her how she could have started a serious fire

I'm glad you believe him, and I have heard of that happening. A couple in a former church I went to had an unfortunate thing happen one night. He was dreaming he was eating a hamburger, and took a bite out of her arm. They took her to the ER because he bit into the muscle!

Pam, that story needs more explanation. I have startled out of my sleep from things blowing around in the Kansas wind and hitting the house--like my porch swing. That makes an awful thump. I have also startled out by dreams, but like I said, I think you need to explain why you had a dog's rear end in your face.

I had a really bad nightmare after being burglerized. I ended up calling the crisis hot line, tho I told them that it wasn't really a crisis and if they had one or were having one that I didn't need to tie them up. They told me it was 3 a.m. during spring break and it was quiet so I had a nice talk with the man.
I just had to reach out and talk to someone because I felt like I was the only person on the planet.
Of course, being the considerate roommate that I am, I didn't wake up the former roommate to keep me company.

Oh, I'm glad you did get to talk to someone. That would keep me wide awake. Are you the kind of person who tries to handle your own problems so you won't be a bother to others? Because I do hope you have people to lean on. I imagine a lot of other people lean on YOU.

After my parents divorced, me and my Mom moved to a small trailer in a very small town. The court house was only a block away. It was a rural area, something I had never lived in before.
One night, we were fast asleep. It was summer and we had the windows open. All of a sudden, this other-worldly and incredibly loud noise went off. I jumped up and ran to my Mom's room. We could barely hear each other talking. She didn't know what it was, either. It sounded like an air-raid siren (ok, I watched old movies)...lol We found out the next day it was the volunteer fire department siren. Believe it or not, we got used to it. But it sure did scare me out of a sound sleep the first time I heard it!

The first thing that comes to my mind was the night an owl swooped down and grabbed our guinea hen out of out kitchen window. It was about 1 am and I had only been asleep for about half an hour. I woke up to a horrible noise. I won't gross you out with the details of what happened after the noise.

Hi Amber!
The scariest thing that has ever woke me up was someone pounding at our front door at about 12:30 at night. I was so scared I couldn't even move!! My husband told me I should have woke up him and he was right, but it just scared me frozen! Whoever it was knocked about three times really loud but I never got up, I just stayed put. My husband wears a CPAP machine so he never heard it.
Great discussion!

Growing up we lived in the parsonage right next to the church. People would knock on our door all hours of the night, some of them we didn't know who wanted bail money for their 'friend' to get them out of jail. My dad was such a sound sleeper that it was usually my mom who went to the door, and I followed with a baseball bat, lol. We didn't live in the best part of town. : )

The scariest thing that wakes me up is a phone call in the middle of the night. Whenever the phone rings at night, for whatever reason, I'm instantly wide awake. Most of the time, the call is from some drunk calling the wrong number, but I have had my share of emergency calls from family members who were sick, or were calling for someone who were sick or had an accident. I've turned off the ringer on the phone in my bedroom, but if it rings for a long time, I can hear it downstairs.

That scares me too Karen. My mother is 74 years old and has some health problems and if my phone ever rings during the night I automatically think it is her.

I have awnings on the lower level of my house. This time of year when it get warm outside the ice cicles get big and when they get ready to go.....well I woke up to a crash one night when one of the big ice cicles fell off the roof and hit the awning! I was scared to go downstairs as it sounded like someone was breaking into the house!

The time I can recently remember is when one of my daughters walked into my bedroom and said my name, it startled me because I didn't even know she was there in my home in the first place. I think I even raised up out of bed and screamed!

Every time I spend the night on the couch (only when hubby is sick and I don't want to disturb him) my husband tries to be quiet when getting up for the loo, but I always wake up, no matter how deeply I sleep.
A dog bum in my face would certainly wake me up too!

When I was about 14 or so, I had a habit of falling asleep with music playing on the stereo. This one particular time I had fallen asleep with a Def Leppard tape playing on repeat. There's a song on the Hysteria album called "Exciteable" that has a really strange sounding beginning with moaning and screaming and a thumping heartbeat. Naturally, I heard this and jumped out of sleep really fast. I hear the song now and it makes me laugh.

Oh wow! How freaky! It reminds me of falling asleep to Sportscenter last week, but waking up suddenly because they were playing a clip of a college coach screaming and ranting at a reporter. It was so loud it sounded like someone was in my apartment. lol

I once woke up thinking that something was crawling on my nose but in actual fact when I got up to see what I had tried to flick off my face, I found nothing. There was nothing at all. I could not believe it but yeah it apparently was a trickle of sweat that ran down my nose. It was the really weird but that was all it was. I was freaking out because It felt gross.
