I believe deaf should be able to enter the tv show American Idol, I mean if you can sign in asl , and dance you can do anything you wish. Maybe you can challenge them?? Or maybe you can start your own americaon idol,DEAF IDOL?

Hi Deafworld, In the french edition of "american idol" (the name here is "seeking the new star" )this year, a deaf girl entered the qualifications, she did use sign language. Obviously, she couldn't be qualified, as she was not singing, but this qualification step was broadcasted on TV, and it was one of the most emotional moment of this year's edition. She had a translator to translate the signs and she was also interviewed after.(her song choice was a french artist whose song title is "breaking the voice" ) You can see her prestation here: http://www.wideo.fr/video/iLyROoaftoWc.html I know that sign language is not international, but you can at least have an idea by watching! Try Deafworld, if this is your dream! just try, never let anything go against your dreams! and if you happen to go to the qualifications, just tell the jury about the adventure here. I wish you good luck !!

I love it when singers or choirs sign all or parts of the lyrics of a piece. I think judging a Deaf singer would be difficult though. If they allowed you to sign the lyrics, would the judges be evaluating your ability to evoke the emotion and meaning of a song? Or would they just give you the pity vote? I doubt most Deaf people would appreciate the latter.

Why is it not fair? It's not discrimination, it's just a fact.

You do have to SING to be on American Idol, but they have had hearing impaired contestants (Eliot Yamin was in the top 3 I think and he's deaf in one ear!) and this past season a blind contestant did very well. I think it's be neat if someone signed while they sang, but since it is a singing competition, you have to SING. I think I'd really love to see a televised talent show that gave people with disabilities a chance to shine, like America's Got Talent or something. It would be inspirational to disabled and non-disabled alike and give people a chance to see that we are all wonderful in our own way and each have something special to give to the world regardless of physical limitations. There is a famous Chinese dance troupe that is comprised completely of deaf people, they may not be able to hear the music, but that doesn't seem to get in their way. My grandma saw them perform once and raved about it for months!

If you sing you'll be able to enter American idol. If you want to dance and use sign language - instead of singing - maybe America's got talent is a better choice of show for you?
