Does having a pet give comfort when "home alone"?

For me it does as my cat Priscilla can sleep all day (or most of it, it seems!) but I talk to her even though she may be sleeping, and for me it feels as though someone else is actually home with me. BUT then comes the time of her not being around any more, she has just turned 16 and my last cat lived till 17. This does sadden me that time is running out as she is such a great "friend" but it is reality the one has to deal with.
Are there pets in your home? And do they give you great comfort?

Oh you bet they do! When I'm alone, my chihuahua's will alert me in a second if they hear something out of the ordinary. At night I'll keep my two german shepherds inside as an extra precaution. I'm legally deaf so the more protection I have the better! LOL But I do feel better when my hubby is home.

My goodness I am picturing the Chihuahua with not one but two German Sheherds, such a cute site! Our dog is very protective but maybe just a little too much as NO-ONE can enter our backyard......but the fact they can alert you in their own way I find that very comforting and can see by your name you are right up there! lol

Does help I found when the children left home to still have pets around to take away the "empty nest feeling" as they call it. Nothing can replace our children of course, but they do help!

Yes pets are great like that they can take away the stress and make you feel so good inside. I love animals and think they are the best. Really they don't do much but they do give unconditional love which is the best kind of love there is on this planet.

Unconditional love is always the best and really don't ask for much in return. Can never understand why people have to be cruel to them, most likley a "power" thingy!

I don't have any pet my own.
Just because my family do not have any pet like 'cat' 'dog' or others. when I was young , I always feed fowls like chickens, ducks, gooses, bulls, horses and donkeys. Those fowls bothered me all the time because I am young and this cost me much time, especially when feed pigs , it's so dirty that I cannot bear even. LOL ~
Now I realize that we have to earn money via selling these fowls and they feed me up really.

I have read about some people living in my state who have a pig as a pet, they had this on the news one night and would you believe it was almost like watching a cat or a dog for the similar way it acted. Guess it was raised at an early enough age for this to happen.

While I don't have any pets now (unless a nine month old son counts as a pet, haha), I used to find it comforting to have pets around when I would be at home alone. For instance, if I heard a strange noise in another room, I could always tell myself, oh, that must have just been the cat. So, it was kind of reassuring. And, pets will snuggle with you and love you no matter what. So, I guess maybe pets are kind of like babies, after all. And some people without kids at home certainly do think of their pets as their babies!

I did find that when my children left home I focused more on my pets to take away that empty feeling one gets when this happens, (not that they were ignored before of course! lol) Nine months old is a lovely age where you have control of them (or they control of you! lol)

oh yes, my cat doesn't like being inside at all except when it is raining or cold, but I love it when she is curled up asleep on the couch, I have had three cats one at a time and strangely enough they have all come to me when I really needed something in my life, they have helped me so much at times i just needed them...

There is something cute about seeing a cat curled up asleep and comfy, and knowing that such a small creature can do so much in times of need, and maybe in return just want some food, and a warm place to sleep at not much cost at all.

Yes I have a cat which has given me a lot of comfort over the years. He goes through some stages where he will spend weeks near me... and other times where he prefers to be outside.
It is an outside cat... and he has also given me a lot of headaches with his fighting. When he comes back from a nasty fight... it is not comforting. lol

Having had male cats in the past Aussie, must say the fighting that went on and the lookalike "snow" from the fur on the ground and the Vet bills to heal the more serious wounds, headaches describe it nicely. The price paid for giving them so called freedom. lol But I do find the male cats can be a little more affectionate, must be a "male" thing as hubby a little the same! lol

I don't have a pet now but I did. I had a cat and had her for 17 years. She was a good friend to me and heard many things from me. It is good to be able to talk to a loved one and animals seem to be able to sense if you are down. My cat would wound herself around my leg and want up in my lap when ever I was down or even just sick. She passed away two years ago and I have not been able to bring myself to get another pet. She was very special to me.

Hope you get better very soon. I think they sense something is wrong when we are sick, and lying around as we are normally busy and it is a change of daily routine that they may pick up on.

I have pets at home but we don't let them in the house but they have shade.Well, yes they give me comfort.I always look forward to their bath time and their walk hour whenever I'm free since I'm still studying.I try my best to bring them food after school if I have extra money for their treats. They cry whenever I go and it breaks my heart but when I come back,it is obvious that they are happy.

I don't know what I would do if I didn't have my kitties here while my boyfriend was traveling for business weeks at a time. I'm fine during the day, but at night I get so lonely and sometimes even a bit uneasy. My kitties always come love on me to cheer me up when I'm feeling like that. When I'm sick there always the first to know too. Recently when I was suffereing bad toothaches prior to my wisdom teeth being removed they both were constantly on my pillow purring and rubbing to try and cheer me up. I think I read somewhere once that it is believed that a cats purring may have healing properties as well which might explain why when they nuzzled against me my toothache would subside for a bit.

Pets do tend to take away the lonliness lena_mae I am sure of it. And the comfort they obviosly gave you while you were in pain (don't envy you there!) I think proves their loyalty. The nuzzling you were receiving took your thought to that so the pain was not as important thankfully. Hope you are better now!

all my pets are indoor and i love it that way.
even though my dogs are small, i still feel protected with them. i even let them sleep on the bed at night, for extra protection.
i talk to my pets all the time and somtimes i think they understand. its just comforting to know that someone is listening.

We do have a dog who is quite large and lives outdoors but not far from view. He is a working dog (or his breed is known for it) but cannot see him working except chasing his ball around the yard. Heaven forbid if he came in side, may look like a Tornado hit the home! lol But the cat does sleep on the bed and almost takes up most of it. lol Yes I think they are a great comfort, and dogs are also great to make us feel secure.

I am often home alone since my partner works away, but I have 3 rosella birds which were "unwanted" and sometimes I know why! They fight like crazy and destroy any paper or wood in their path. Onnly last week Little Lady chewed up half the cover of a brand new book, seeeeethe.
However, they can also be extremely cute, and when I am making a sandwich they hover on their standing post, peering round the doorway to see what I am going to eat, and naturally they want their treat.
Then they stand on one leg, holding their treat in one claw, and eat away and they look so adorable and innocent. If only they hannd't caused so much damage!

I don't have any pets but I hope to get 1 one day.
I can imagine though... when home alone, pets are company.
How nice that would be....

I have three indoor cats and a outdoor dog. My cats give me great comfort as well as comfort for the kids also. When someone is sick, Tom or Jerry will curl up next to you and start purring, and I always seem to feel better. When my kids go to bed they love it when the cats cuddle with them. Tiger is still a kitten so he brings alot of laughter through the house. The kids have so much fun watching him play or rolling his kitty toys in front of him so he will chase them.
Our dog creed we are trying to find a good loving home for him. He is a Labador Retriver and wants alot of attention. We are always so busy that we dont have the time to play with him so he has dug up my backyard. My son wants a small dog that we can keep in the house and enjoy.
But I want Creed to go to a good home so i am really careful about who I give him to.He is a sweet loveable dog but he just needs more attention than we can give.
But I couldnt see not having pets,me and my kids would be heartbroken.

My pets live in the house with me, it's great to have them around. I wonder sometimes if my cat thinks he's a dog because he'll eat out of their dish sometimes rather than his own and they'll come over to see what he has as well. It's great to see how cats and dogs get along so nicely.
