Will you return to myLot?

Inertia. What comes to your mind when I say INERTIA? Science lessons? Isaac Newton? A big beer belly? In plain talk, inertia means not getting up when you are already sitting. And the longer you sit, the harder it is for you to leave your seat.
Take myLot for instance, I am an observer (and participant) of many old-timers leaving myLot for reasons too many to list. I have a good friend here who told me that though she feels like coming back, it seems strange to literally pop back onto the scene because she has been away for so long. I suggested that she skips the posting and warms up with responding.
I think the above situation is a familiar one to all of us. If you have not experienced it yet, I am almost willing to bet a dime that you will. New user comes in, gets all excited, gets dejected with no response, slowly feels his way around, starts getting responses, gets all hyped up again, starts to get bored, stagnates and ultimately leaves.
Do you do anything after "doing" nothing for so long? Or do you give way to inertia and just stay there? I was a bit inspired by Crash's discussion at http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1402356.aspx . Though I missed the Q&A session this myLot staff fielded, I read through the discussion and feel good about the whole thing. I can't exactly put a finger to it but I just thought I would try get into the swing of things again. After all, I had been stepping up on my responding recently so perhaps it is time for me to try post discussions again.
This is not really a "What is 1+1?" kinda discussion. Remember Crash said a quality response is worth more than a dozen lousy ones (my words) so please, do share your thoughts on this subject if you would. =)

I was 'away' quit a bit this past summer and fall being busy with yard work, outdoor activities, moving, new business and more. When I did come back active I was thrilled to find that many of my old friends not only remembered me but seemed happy to see me back.
I actually did just as you suggested started back by responding to several of my friends discussions and after a few days decided to post a discussion. I'm happy to be back although still a bit over whelmed by so much to do and so little time to do it in - I would be happy doing nothing but setting here on myLot all day and half the night if only that effort would pay the bills :(
Glad to see you back dear friend, missed you.

And of course we remember you! How can we forget someone whose presence makes others pale in comparison? :P

Hi baby "waves"...this friend of yours, she sounds familiar to me, lol. Despite my long absences from mylot, I am well aware of all the discussions my friends posted. Admittedly, I never bothered to partake in the discussions because my mind was elsewhere. I allowed myself to sink in another direction, in another world.
After reading one of black cat's discussions, I was mortified to discover that I have completely lost my wits and senses. I understood what she was posting yet I didn't know what to response. Everything seems vague and totally alien to me.
For the past 3 days, it took all my supreme willpower to stay away from the computer. I used the time to bring back my faculties and contemplating on a possible return to mylot.
I felt guilty when so many mylotters left messages on my email urging me to come back and start posting. I can't say that I will fully swing back to mylot. Maybe, there will come a time when I will start to feel the excitement once again.
For now, I will follow your advice and begin responding one at a time. :)

It is great to see both of you back here and I for one think we can still make mylot what it always could have been , that is a forum for interesting discussions to which we can all add our own particular spin to. In time, I do believe that many of the established users will return, albeit unjder a new name

Geez baby...I'm really senile. Was it only 2 days ago? "banging my head on the wall" You know, I feel like a newbie here. Mylot seems ancient ago and I almost forgot that most mylotters knew me as "Bunny." You think I can revert back to my old, jolly, hopping bunny self again, lol!
Hello Eskarena, Its been a while but I'm sure glad to see you again. I understand what you mean. We used to have a grand time exchanging friendly banter. And laughing at all the sparks and flames burning within mylot.
I sure hope we all get to feel those vibrancy once again.

I don't think I can ever get bored with this site. Its now more about my friends here that I come here and money has become sdecondary slightly. I love responding to the posts and rarely post my own discussions. I have been away a lotr from here first due to my exams and then because I shifted to Gangtok where there was no net connection for two months Both times I missed my friends here and was glad to be back. Infact other day, I responded to my friends messages first then replied to discussions and then thought I should have done it other way round but then thought "Oh what the hell , Money can come any other day too."

They will be yours too, if you were living where I am living right now. There are just four houses on this hill and three are occupied including mine with families. If you need something nearest shop is thirty minutes uphill and no form of communication is there except now we have got a phoneline and internet connection since 15th Feb, lol. Pretty deserted but heavenly place this is.

Greetings oh wizardly one,
Where I have also grappled with the bizarre administrative hurdles here, I have chosen to stay -- at least for now. And, in that same vein, I'm thrilled that you've decided to 'dip your toes' into the waters of posting again. You have a unique way of disecting the mundane, which I find very appealing.
Is the friend of which you speak, one that I would easily welcome back? You know who I mean. If so, then I would second your prodding for that friend to return. If we're thinking of the same person, then no doubt she has been missed.
To directly answer your question, if my absence was based on principle, rather than convenience, then it would be harder to return. Though, the shortness of memory would be an aid in this regard. I would also consider whether or not others in that pursuit would welcome my return, or if it would be frowned upon. In your case, I'm sure that only the warmest welcomes will be offered. This is a certainty in my case.
You have been missed, and I for one, am thrilled to be responding to your post! Woooo-hooooo, the wizard has returned!

I am not sure which friend you are referring to but I was talking about Charms88. ^^
As for PRINCIPLES, well, that is one BIG word. I am a man of principles too so it would be hard for me to budge if I had decided to do something because of my principles - be it right or wrong (lol).:P

Hello again lordwarwizard, welcome back to posting, once again!:-)
Inertia also means not to stop when you are already in motion!:-)
I, too, took a hiatus and didn’t post until this last month. I think I didn’t post for about more than 5 months. I took a complete break from mylot for around 2 months (Nov-Dec) mostly because of situation in my homeland and my academic activity. It wasn’t difficult though, to come back and post again, probably because I didn’t go off for any grievance or principle stance reasons. Still, as you say, I started and continued only ‘responding’ to discussions without starting one of my own! Your description of cycle from coming of a new user to his/her leaving also appears to be plausible!
However, despite my own experience, I completely understand why (and how) an old user who has been away from mylot, and hence from developments, for long, would feel hesitant or strange in starting up again. Our perceptions about places, offline and online, can’t be separated from the people that we interact with in relation to those places. So, in the absence of those people or ability to keep up with their updates, these places start looking strange to us. We seem and feel out of line to other things.
I do think that ‘Crash’is a very welcome inclusion in how mylot was/is being run. Even though, he failed to satisfy many and was mostly diplomatic rather than straight but still it was a good move. And then again, it’s difficult that all be satisfied! I see this site becoming better in certain areas and that’s a good sign!
You are always welcome to start your posts, my friend, for all your postings are interesting and enjoyable! I hope, you will continue to post!:-)

Haha Kamran, well said! Not to stop when you are already in motion! (Or do they call that momentum too? :P)
I just thought to add too that while old faces are disappearing from the myLot scene, new faces are appearing always.
When I was active, I "knew" pretty much everyone who was active and everyone was pretty much my friend. Now, my friends are dwindling into a minority and many active members (whether high or low post count) are strangers to me.
In a way, I have to start from scratch again and I can't be sure if my tender heart is up to it lol. Thanks for being so supportive as always! ^^

Geez, are you trying to reduce me to tears? I have left school long ago and science, even longer! :P
As for the reason you mentioned - disappointment with other paying sites, well, that might possibly be one of the reasons. It is not mine though since even though I wasn't active at myLot, I didn't become active in other similar paying sites.

Actually, in physical terms, Inertia is resistance of a mass to change of state, whether it is at rest or in straight line motion! It is intrinsic property of mass, while momentum can be changed by use of external force! :-)
You are very right about new faces appearing all the time. But, I am also seeing return of some veterans here. It probably has something to do, at least in part, with partial disappointment of folks with other paying social networking sites. Plus, the interface that mylot provides is, I guess, better than many other forums. Earnings have also been upgraded lately here. So, there are converging factors that implicate a rise in interest and activity here!
Yes, I believe you ‘knew’ many people here and I used to commend your level of personal interaction with users. I hope you will be able to catch up soon even if you have to start from scratch!
Best of luck!:-)

Well my friend i have been through all the stages you discribe, more than once in some cases, and I am still here. I dont know why, but my motivation in mylot comes and goes in waves. I have left on at least 3 seperate occasions. It has helped me that i have started getting an appropriate recompense this month for the first time in over 12 months. This has helped my motivation no end. I am sure mylot has tried many different things, and in my opinion, crash is one of the better ones. It was a long time coming to have an open forum for mylot admin to answer outr questions but at least they did, in a honest manner too.

Indeed my friend, I am quite a "veteran" like you too. I have been through the stages more than once (lol).
In fact, I can't even be sure how long my newest comeback will last. 1 day? 1 month? 2 weeks? I will need the support of all my friends to keep me "excited" and I hope I will reciprocate with the same impetus.=)
And yup, I agree that Crash's "coming out" is a good move. Finally many of our queries are answered. Though it is a pity I missed the Q&A, I did not have any burning questions and many of the grey areas got cleared as I went through the 28 pages. *GASP*

I joined MyLot in December 06 and have not once stepped away from it for any extended period of time. I may not be as active but I check in at least once a day and try and find some discussions I can respond to. That seems to be the problem for me is finding discussions to respond to - good quality discussions - discussions of interest to me. Unfortunately my only referral has decided not to come back, though she stepped in briefly when she needed some advice. And HER referral isn't participating either so I am making nothing on referrals. My link is on Facebook but that isn't accomplishing anything.
As far as the computer overall, yeah, I have a hard time getting up and walking away from it. For one thing, this chair is the most comfortable chair for me with my fibromyalgia. When I decide to take a break for an evening to watch TV snuggled up with hubby, or just with the family, or let my daughter use the computer, I will sit on the couch, then lie down, then fall asleep. So sitting at the computer is actually my way of staying awake. Believe me, I've got enough on here to keep me busy. It's actually pretty bad because I find I am doing less and less of other things... except for laundry because the laundry room is right down here off the rec room. But I haven't walked since last spring. And now I have another health issue because of it.
The computer is addictive and sometime you just have to say to yourself, "Get a life!" But I am a writer so really this is where I need to be. But, I am too busy trying to find money making sites on the internet and working them and not getting my writing done either... unless I'm given a deadline to work with. I can't give MYSELF a deadline though. It has to be one set by someone else.
We have a swimming pool in our backyard. Shouldn't that be where I spend my summer, not down in the basement on the computer? Tsk tsk tsk... In my defence, it really wasn't that great of a summer last year. We don't have a heater on the pool and the temperature outside always dropped at night last summer making the pool water temperature drop. The water rarely got to the temp that is tolerable for me. The summer before that the water was so warm we had to ADD cold water.
I may be rambling now, or just divulging the story of my pathetic life. I like myLot and don't plan on walking away anytime too soon.

Hello Patgalca,
It's either tough or easy making a living from referrals. Some people are just so good at this and Crash himself said they were the top earners here at myLot (a part of me thinks it is not fair that the ones leading the least work get the most money but who cares about this part of me :P).
Staying awake... being on the computer... well, you can always do things other than myLot. The fact that you had remained with myLot all this while is commendable.
Pathetic life? You are a writer, aren't you? "Pathetic" lives sometimes make for the best of stories.:P

Hmmm, well basically I got a job so I cannot spend as much time as I have previously. I mostly would respond to people's questions anyway because, hey, hardly anyone responds to my questions, so why not answer other peoples? As you see I come here from time to time to chat and see what's up. Plus, I get a little money, so why not? ;).
I think other people have left because there are some retarded users on here that are only worried about the money, or they want to argue about nothing, or the people just don't have time to come on this site. I am sure everyone has their reasons. :)

I think and think and find it difficult to answer the top question. I prefer to answer the second :P
Inertia reminds me the period when I was taking driving lessons. It is a series of lessons before taking the first theory test. Then again a series of practical lessons at the circuit before the first practical test. Then there is a long break before the 2nd test and the 3rd test and the 4th and 5th and 101 tests. I did not forget why I want the driving license. Even with the carrot dangling in front of my nose and the penalty of retaking my advanced theory, the inertia is just not there. Have I stopped? No. I am merely taking a breather.
Now for the top question..... I am still with mylot. LOL.

But every time mylot flash in to my mind how I wish I have my pc with me because I missed my friends their discussion and exchanging ideas. I don't start many discussions, so therefore I just think you are gone, when in fact you are responding to discussions, just as I am.

I am the same way, terri, I have been here since December 06 and never walked away, but I don't start very many discussions. I try to look out for stuff in the news or an incident in life that might make good fodder for discussion, but for the most part I respond to discussions. The lack of good quality discussions to respond to make me look inactive.

My dime is in the mail, en route to you. ;)
I'm one of many who have left this site for a while. I returned about one year after I first joined, using a different username (I used to be QueenKaren... but closed the account). Granted, my reasons for leaving weren't so much about not finding conversations that interested me, but for personal reasons regarding myself and another user on here.
I haven't read through any of the "Crash" posts and Q&A sessions, but I am glad to see that the system somehow has adjustments to it, so that it recognizes quality responses over short answer ones. Is this affecting the payouts?
As for inertia, what comes to mind is a cartoon movie I saw in a high school physics class. The man was driving in a car at a high speed, and as the car sped up, it showed him being pushed back into the seat. But as the car reached a constant speed, it showed how he could move about as he had before the car started moving... and that was inertia.

I have spent very little time here over the past few months, mainly due to the demands of my job. This has not deterred me from returning by any means, and I have responded to a few posts per day for the past week or so since I find that I have a little more time available now.
There has to be a myriad of reasons why people have found themselves not participating much for a period of time, although I cannot think of any reason why someone should be apprehensive about becoming active again.

I got the "starting to get bored" syndrome when i was first signed up. I think after i got to 1000 posts i began to get bored and felt like i was answering a lot of the same questions over and over again!
I know a lot of people have left mylot, i still have some of them on my friends list that have been off since i left! When i came back i came across a new group of people who seem like they are here to stay for a while! They are good mylot friends and are supportive, and i support them. I think that helps to keep you here, when you enjoy people with similar interests and you interact with them on a daily or almost daily basis.

You're right about coming back here and focusing on responses at first. It didn't seem right to just "pop" back on here and start discussions and expect a ton of replies. It seems to be kind of a slow and steady process to completely get back into Mylot. I started a discussion today because I needed help with something but I'll probably focus the rest of the day on giving some good quality responses where I can. Great post with this subject. Yes I believe that i would return to mylot. Mylot is a good place to earn extra, make new friends, share your thought, help other people, learn, speed up your typing skill, expand your vocabulary, learn new ideas... and see the humor in life...packed all in one by mylot. Yet at some point, we will find it a little bit tiring... but at the end of the day you will still find yourself logging in and responding.

Wondered where you were. Well, all the while reading your first paragraph I thought "myLot" but not regarding going away and not coming back. I though inertia was me sitting here typing up a few discussions and a LOT of replies as inertia. The other one is the inertia (laziness or sentimentality, which?) that keeps me from going into my myLot friend list and deleting some of the people who are absolutely charming when I reply to 50 or 60 of their discussions, but never ever come around to pop in on one of mine. That is another kind of inertia.

Hahaha...
Take it easy. Don't be bothered too much whether someone replies to your discussions. Don't intentionally avoid someone's discussions either. Don't keep score, don't keep a tally...
It sounds easy but may not be in practice. But I think keeping to the above mentality can help make your time at myLot more enjoyable.:)
