Do you see a penny and pick it up?

I used to pick up every penny I saw as it is good luck to pick it up. At least that is what my mom used to tell me. These days I rarely bend over to pick up a penny, I guess I am just too lazy. I'll stoop for a nickel. I know a penny saved is a penny earned but I have so much change as it is with our dollars and two dollar bills being coins in Canada now. Do you still stop and pick up pennies?

Oh I pick up those pennies. My kids probably don't even though when they were little, it was a big deal. My change goes right into a little jar and then to the grocery store to the change exchange machines. Of course, using those machines loses a little bit of my money for costs, so maybe the pennies I pick up pay for the transaction. And of course, I'd feel a little twinge of supersitition if I walked right by that little coin on the ground.

Oh I remember the lean years when this change had to be rolled up and used for groceries and gas. And when the kids were little, we'd also raid the change jar and go get them slushies at the local 7-eleven. I never minded paying in nickels.

Oh yes, pick up the pennies! I do the same thing. My husband used to kid me when I would pick up pennies, dimes or what have you. I put them in jars. Once in the earlier times of our marrige we were low on funds. I took the coin jar to the store change exchange machine and walked out with that nights dinner and enough for a week of gas to get to work. There is no more kidding me about picking up pennies.

Depends on how dirty it is..
I do collect change here and there and let our little one put in her piggy bank. We are trying to teach her about responsibility and the value of money early.
It does drive me completely insane to walk past a fountain and see ALL the change laying there at the bottom of the water doing nothing. Not earning interest, not being used to stimulate the economy. And really do you think a penny in a fountain is going to make your wishes come true???

The money doesn't just sit there. Every once in a while the money is collected and donated. Every fountain goes to a specific charity. Some fountains will have plaques that tell you where the money goes. Do we believe that our wishes will come true? not likely. it's fun for kids, though. they're using their imagination. and it's harmless. Our kids should learn the value of money, but I don't believe in teaching them to be scrooges. We give to those that are less fortunate. anyway. money in the fountains are donations. I hope knowing that doesn't upset you so much. why do you think it's illegal to take the money back out of the fountain?

I will only pick up a penny if it's heads up as I believe in good luck/bad luck. If a penny is heads up it will bring you good luck. If it's tails up it will bring you bad luck. That's what my parents always taught me and I have done the same with my children. At times they will even find change roaming around the vehicle and say Mom can I keep this. I tell them yes. Makes it interesting and keeps them busy whenever we go somewhere.

I've never heard this either. Interesting! As a kid, I was taught the rhyme, "Find a penny, pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck."

I use to do that w/ my great-grandmother when I was a little girl. I didn't do it much after growing up until just recently. My Great-grandmother just passed away in the summer, so now I find myself picking up more pennies all the time. You know, there have been instances when people have found pennies that were worth more than a penny. Old coins have value. Now, if i drop a penny, I'll leave it for someone else to find. My kids light up when they find pennies, so I know that my dropped penny will make another kids day, too. i'm funny like that. And, I'm not really superstitious, but if i see the tail, i have to turn it over and walk away. not all the time, but I can be like that sometimes. i guess i'm more wierd than funny. lol.

We no longer use one or two cent pieces. However, people tend to throw away handfuls of five cent pieces. I picked up 65 cents one time. It's getting much harder for me to pick them up as well with my bad knees, sore back and extra weight but I just can't leave them there.
People don't have the respect for money they should. Remember the old adage...If you look after your pennies, the pounds take care of themselves...so, ok, that was pre decimal but it stuck with me and it's very true. I've always been careful with money.

I pick up any form of change. Yes, even pennies. As long as the object has monetary value of some sort, I will pick it up, no matter what. One time I spotted a penny in the middle of the road, but I was not going to go until I picked up that penny. So I waited almost five minutes for all of the cars to go, then I proceeded to pick it up and added it up to my penny collection. My penny collection comes in handy at the end of the year when I exchange it for gift cards at Coinstar.

I feel nothing wrong in picking up a penny when you saw it. Here also some people say it is a symbol of fortune. What I usally do is I will drop that in temple collection box OR give it to a begger on the toad side.

No i do't. I say to my daughter"see a penny pick it up." She picks it up. It'll go in her bank. Then hand sanitizer that I keep in my purse goes on her hands. lol

I used to when I was younger. But, these days, I don't carry a lot of cash around. I tend to use my debit/visa card more than anything else. Plus, knowing what is on money now, I just have a really hard time handling cash. People are filthy...not all...but most. The disgusting stuff that is on money weirds me out. I really only have cash after a birthday or Christmas. Usually the first few months of the year following Christmas as my Bday was just last Friday. But, once that cash is spent (usually for Starbucks coffe), I don't carry cash and picking up a coin from the ground is just more cash I don't want to touch or carry! I am a little tiny bit of germaphobe. Sort of a new thing for me this year because I get sick so easily that, I just don't want to take anymore chances than I already am taking by being out in public. Nevermind the feces that ends up on money because some people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. Ugh! I am nauseated just thinking about it!
Thanks a lot for making me sick to my stomach with your discussion topic! LOL! Just kidding!

Serves you right for making me nauseous with the thought of dirty money! LOL! Go wash your filthy hands! LOL! Just kidding.
That is so gross about how black your hands would get after handling all that money! I never even thought of how visibly dirty a lot of handling money can do! Gross! I just think of the invisible bugs and filth! Ick! So nasty!
Love my debit/visa! It is a slight bit less safe if it gets stolen but, then again...you don't have proof if someone stole your cash so, you will never get that back. At least most banks protect you so that if your debit/cc is stolen, they will give you your money back!
And, since I don't have to hand my card over to someone as much as I can just swipe it, it is a lot less filthy. Hehehe!

I still pick up every penny I find. Not only for the good luck, but for the extra penny. You never know when you will need it. I have been down to almost only a penny (not quite) so I still like to pick it up. It is amazing, to me though, the number of people I see who do not do it.

If the place where the penny is seen is spacious, or I just feel like it, I'd pick it up, dust it off a bit, and then put it in my pocket. I've picked so much quarters though so I guess my coin purse it already bulging with it everytime I put coins in them. It does get heavy though but, it feels kind'a nice to have that much weight in terms of money, even though the denominations are quite little ^_^;

I pick up what ever change/money I find. I think that it helps me collect change for what I need that money for. And even though it is one penny they end up adding up.

Pretty much. I have a container that I keep all my change in and then when it gets full I turn it in.

If it is one buck or more, I will pick it up.
I remember when I was a kid, I used to pick up every penny on the road. Maybe I changed a lot too.

Yes, me too. Maybe our lives don't change at all, but we changed. Can we go back? Can we give up something we have now?

Heck yes! Sure, I believe in the whole "penny saved, penny earned" deal, but really I'll just stoop for anything shiny. I've been called a crow.
