My upstairs neighbor wants to "hook up" to my Comcast cable!

Neighbor wants to connect to my cable. - cable connection

I get my phone and internet through Comcast but I have directv for my television. A neighbor knocked on my door this morning and asked me if he could hook his tv up to my comcast cable. For starters I don't subscribe to their cable so I don't even know if he can do it. I'm also worried that they would find out and I'm the one who would get into trouble. His arguement was that a lot of people in the building (18 apartments) do it and none of them have been "caught". The thing is I don't want to be the first one and it would be my luck that I would. I said no and he should find someone else in the building who might do it for him. Would you have taken the chance of getting caught and let your neighbor do this? Do you think a lot of people do this?

Whoa they would get caught for sure. I would never do that. If they want cable then they should get it themselves. Don't get yourself involved with them.

I would have said no no and no. There have been warnigs on the radio lately that the companies are going to look into this stealing services. He and the person he hooks up to could both land in jail as it is called theft of services if he wants the service he can pay for it.

I wouldn't have done it and I would have been more than willing to flat out tell the neighbor no way. It seems like a small thing to do, but it is unethical. And yeah, you would be the one to go down most likely, not them. And it may not mean jail time, just a $10,000 fine. I'm not kidding. I heard on the news the other day about a woman who hooked her cable up through her neighbor's, and the neighbor got that huge amount of a fine. So good for you for not caving in to the pressure.

I have personally done it, but I know people who have. I think it's dishonest and like stealing. Also if he was caught you would probably be in troube to because you knowingly help him get that for free. I would definately tell him no. There's no reason he shouldn't pay for cable and if he can't afford it ten he should go without.

I agree with you and everyone else it looks like - NO! I would say the neighbor had a lot of nerve even asking, that's pretty bold. It would be one thing if you were friends and talking one day and you offered but wow to knock on your door and ask. It's against the law that's it flat out and let everyone else get caught 'steeling'. Yes, I am sure a lot of people do this but that doesn't make it right.

I wouldn't do it for anyone unless is my close family. Cable is able to truck all customers and find it out. Penalty would be for you to pay, not for him, because your name is on the Comcast bill....

because a lot of people do it, is not a reason to do it too! And is this neighbor offering to pay half your bill? I am probably the wrong one to give advice. I am living in my building for 23 years, and there are 90 apts. For the first nineteen years, I went to work every day and was a quiet neighbor when I was home. Six years ago I sat on the board of directors for 2 years. Suddenly, everybody was my friend. I couldn't leave the building without a bunch of neighbors talking my ear off with complaints, or asking for favors. Then 4 years ago I got ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease. Now I have aides to help me, but for a full year I was on my own, with a cane or walker doing my grocery shopping, and everything else. Do you think ONE OF THEM came to my door to ask if they could help or pick up something for me at the grocery? NOT ONE! So I would never let anyone get cable for free, and let me pay, and risk getting me in trouble. It's called "theft of service" and it's a crime!

Absolutely not! I live on the concept that just because others have not being caught does not mean you won't be caught. I believe it is illegal! Why doesn't the neighbor want to respect himself/herself and pay for the cable. I really never had a problem with that because all of the past apartments I had live in have free digital cable. -Feel Free to Disagree!

Cable TV - No hooking up with neighbors!!
Oh I'm soooo with you there!! No way would I agree to doing that because you could be held responsible too because you let him in the door to do the deed. It's always better to be safe than to be sorry, even if it's at a cost of friends for if they were to go against you, they weren't your friend to begin with.

I wouldn't do it. For starters when we got cable hooked up to our place the cable guy told us to keep an eye out because its illegal for your neighbors to do that. They can find out by checking the wires when they go to the apartment they can find cable wires hot and then the person who is getting the cable illegally would be in trouble, plus a fine. Its way to risky.

I agree with you in saying no. It's not like you should do him a favour and if he isn't paying you for some of the service what would be in it for you. Also I don't think he would get the cable TV part anyways since you don't subscribe to it. He would only get to hook up his computer and if he has a laptop he can do that to anybody's computer connection by just roaming. I have lived in a house that we had several TV's and phones so we have spliced into the line ourselves instead of paying for another commection, but I think everyone does that in their own home. But why should you help out your neighbour.

I would have said no also. You can get into a lot of trouble for that. i think that just because nobody has gotten caught, doesn't mean that nobody is going to ever get caught. I wouldn't take the chance. It's just not worth it.

In our appartment mostly peoples have their DISH TV's and that's why nobody try to hook up to anothers cable. But if someone try to do so then he even can't able to do so, because via DISH TV only one user at a time can watch channel's or any program. But i have a Internet connection which i wanted to share with someone if anyone wanted it to share. It saves a lot of money for me and hopefully then i will surely buy some more connection and then get a super speed Internet or Broadband connection. Its not an illegal offence afterall we all live in a building and by this we just help each other. Cheers!!!

Wait, let get this right...you pay the bill and he gets cable for free and you take the risk. I just don't see why you wouldn't buy into this..other then you are not a blithering idiot. I would not take the chance and I don't know of anyone who does. I do know people were getting on to my wireless network, but we put on the WEP key and took care of that.

So you can foot the bill and he get it free, I had a friend worked at the cable company down home and when they found someone hooked up illegal they took them to court, it they was running wire to others they went to jail. Why couldn't he get it himself did he owe them or just wanted a free ride. You are the one doing it illegal and i bet when caught it would be you who he said had the idea. Don't ever let anyone hook into your utilities or any kind and be responsible. And if you did nto subscribe to the tv stations it would have done him no good because nothing would of came through on his tv. You only get what you subscribe to.

No way! I would have done the same as you. I would have told him politely but firmly, no. That is definitely against the rules of the ISP and they can bring a legal case against you and sue your pants off. I certainly wouldn't want that. And if your neighbor does something unlawful, you might be implicated and considered an accomplice and things could turn far worse than a "simple" fine.

I would have said no also. I mean what if he gets caught wouldn't you be in troube too. All I can say is at least he asked lol.. I have heard of people hijacking into other people internet connections and causing all sorts of problems.
