my friend gave up meat for lint this year. . . but i caught him eating fish. he explained to me that fish was not considered a meat in the religious world becuase jesus was a fisherman.
does this make sense to anyone.
my logic: fish is an animal. animals have muscle. muscle is meat.
so do you consider fish a meat?

I have to agree with you completely. Meat is the muscle of an animal, which fish are almost entirely since they flex their entire body to swim, like a snake.
It's extremely hypocritical making exceptions for a certain delicacy just because someone important to your religion enjoyed it. If they say no meat, it should be a ban on the entire food category.
More for me. ^.^

Thank you. :) Logic, I find, is highly selective and open to interpretation. I usually just follow whatever makes the most sense to me from my past experiences.
As for my screen name, it's an amalgamation of 2 other words. See if you can find all the secrets hidden within. ;)

I've never understood it either. Even as a little kid, when I would hear people saying they couldn't eat meat but they could eat fish, I would be like "What the heck??"
Besides, I thought Jesus was a carpenter, not a fisherman? Or was he just the son of a carpenter? Unless you're counting the "fishers of men" thing as making him a fisherman?
I'm glad my religion doesn't encourage me to eat fish, since it makes me ill. :P

Actually, after thinking about it today, I was wondering if maybe fish was allowed because of that miracle of feeding five thousand people with two fish and five loaves of bread. That would make sense in a way, that it was acceptable to eat fish because fish was what Jesus used to feed the multitudes, and it would be a reminder of that act.
I could be off base here, but that was the only Biblical thing I could think of that related to fish and seemed at all possible to apply.
Eh, I don't worry about what I'm missing when it comes to fish making me sick... I have lots of other things I enjoy eating. :P

I don't eat fish because I do look at it like meat. However my partner doesn't look at fish like meat. So when I cook he says he wants meat, when I say I have a can of tuna or something he claims that fish is not meat and he wants meat. So I give him soya nuggets and he is happily thinking he is eating chicken . LOL

I decided to be vegetarian many years ago and I am quite happy never to eat meat for the rest of my life but I found I could not give up fish. I do continue eating fish, so I can't strictly call myself vegetarian. It is a type of meat but is better for your health than red meat. So, if it has legs I don't eat it but if it has fins I can still enjoy it.

Being the friend that you "caught" eating fish... even though we've only ever eaten together once and I didn't have any type of meat that day what-so-ever that day... I have been completely open since before Lent started that I was giving up Beef and Poultry.
Giving somthing up for Lent is about making a sacrifice in terms of discipline. When we are faced with that item/s it should cause us to thing about Christ's sacrifice. It's an act of remembrance.
And oh ya... Jesus was the son of a carpenter. We are never told if he made anything himself, though he probably did. As for the fishermen... a lot of the disciples were. And Jesus did do several miracles with fish. Spent time in a boat fishing too. He even paid his taxes with one once. lol
Happy Lenten Season People!!!

when Catholics give up meat for fridays and certain other days of abstinence during the year it is what we know as Flesh Meats - so while fish are indeed meat, most of them do not qualify as flesh meats.
Flesh meat is considered meat from warm blooded animals, most fish are cold blooded so we can eat them - also turtles -snakes - insects (if we were so inclined)
the reason for giving up flesh meat is not because Christ was a fisherman. But, because He gave up His flesh for us it is a small commemoration of His sacrifice by denying in some way our own flesh.
This is why in many countries it is all Friday's of the Year plus a few of the vigils of holy days of obligation.

I myself do not consider fish as a meat. i grew up eating fish every Friday even though we were not catholic. I love lent because every where runs fish specials.

I seriously have a hard time believing he could have coughed up sh*t like that, what a pathetic excuse. Jesus was the son of a carpenter, however some of his diciples were fishermen. Of course fish is meat, since it has been alive and as you say, muscles are meat.

in religion, fish is a kind of meat in my country. If you want to hold your religion, in the fast day, you must be far away with fish, meat of any kind of aninals...
