Who actually likes Anchovies?

Hi Pizza Munchers,
It might not be the case for you, but I HATE anchovies - in fact I even hate the THOUGHT of the things. I can't stomach their taste, nor can I tolerate their horrible squishy presence on my palate.
About the only other thing that I dislike as much as anchovies is SNAILS, OYSTERS and any other form of SHELLFISH (which I consider to be the culinary equivalent of congealed elephant snot).
But all those things are invertebrate Molluscs, so it's probably understandable that they have all the nutritional appeal of a blob of snot. And I hope no-one anywhere in the world actually contaminates a perfectly good pizza with this sort of stuff.
Anchovies, on the other hand, are actually pickled fish - and I don't mind sardines or salmon on my pizza, but I HATE anchovies!
So I'm wondering, who is it that actually LIKES anchovies?
I have the peculiar feeling that it's more women than men who have a taste for these things - and strangely, the same thing appears to me to apply to oysters, too.
Is this right? Are women more likely to like anchovies on their pizza? If that IS true, why is it so???

Well I'm a woman and I like anchovies, so I suppose your theory is correct! Sorry to repulse you and all, but I do have them on pizza now and then! I'm a weirdo!
I hate shellfish, snails and oysters though. The thought of them makes me gag. Odd no?

My dad loves anchovies. He eats them from the jar and has them on toast...enjoying every delectable bite. I've found some anchovy stuffed olives that have a wonderful flavour, the combination is neither the taste of olives or anchovies. I'm off to visit him in a few days and will take some as a treat. Dad will be 95 this year.
I love anchovies too but not as much as Dad, I have them on pizza, just a few pieces as a surprise. And I don't always have them. I also love oysters. I make soup, have them raw and love them grilled with a blend of tomato and worcestershire sauce and chopped bacon. I love all sorts of shellfish, specially prawns and lobster.
I would NEVER put sardines or salmon on pizza....yuck! But I like these fishy delicacies (?) also.
I think men like oysters more than women, that's been my experience anyway. My ex loved anchovies and oysters as well.
So, I can't say for sure wheter it's true or not.

Hi MsTickle,
All I can say here is - I cannot imagine why anyone would want to spoil a perfectly good olive by inserting anchovies into it!
I'm slightly bemused by your aversion to fish on pizzas, though. There's a pizza chain here called La Porchettas which serves a range of gourmet pizzas, including (wait for it) Salmon Pizza... very very nice indeed for those aspiring to sophisticated cuisine.
As for that horrible mollusc, the Oyster, I have a suspicion that many people who so eagerly suck those things down started out by sampling other kiddies' snot in the school yard all those years ago. And it just ballooned from there.
Not that there's anything wrong with that - it's a permissive society we live in, after all.
Prawns and lobsters are a different kettle of fish altogether, IMO. They're not actually molluscs like snails and other shell-snot, but are good, meaty Crustaceans which, while being invertebrates in that they lack a skeleton, their flesh is nevertheless much closer to the more fibrous and substantial fare that terrestrial mammals are more accustomed to munching on.
Yet after all that, anchovies (the epitomy of Ingredientus Horribillus) are a fish, which is a vertebrate, and yet they send the Disgusting Meter off the scale!
To each their own - but now I have no clue as to whether the taste for horrible squishy things like oysters and / or anchovies is a gender-related thing or not.

I've only had them a couple of times and I really liked them. But, they're hard to find as a lot of pizza places don't offer them. I have to get them on a personal pan pizza, too, because no one else likes them. But, I've never seen them offered on any places that serve personal pizzas, only on whole pizzas at Italian restaurants.

I probably should add that I have a shellfish allergy, so I would never add those to anything. Even before I got the allergy, I would only consider shrimp as a topping.

Hi desertdarlene,
Thanks for sharing your experiences here.
You're apparently one of the few who actually like the things.
But I'm relieved you don't extend that affinity to stuff like oysters and snails. The very idea causes me discomfort.
I'm sorry you're allergic to prawns - they're about the only "shellfish" that have any civilised respectability IMO, and they ARE very moorish, to say the least.

Hi brimia,
Thanks for your insight here.
It's not hard to understand a taste for salty foods - I have the same weakness (except where anchovies are concerned).
And I guess it's nice to see other people have some sanity regarding molluscs - I really doubt that humans were meant to eat these horrid things.
Good for you being a vegan! Doesn't matter what your reasons are, they're probably good ones.

I am a woman..and I do not like anchovies...and neither does my hubby. So whether it is a gender thing...an acquired taste (or the lack of it)anchovies are not high on our hit parade either. Nor do I like oysters, snails and most shellfish. Like you I give them all a BIG thumbs DOWN!
Been busy...doing my best to catch up and wanted to drop by and say hi on your site the way you regularly do on mine.
Have an enjoyable Easter weekend.

I'm a guy and believe me, here in our place, women were the one's who are picky-eaters. I could eat almost everything, including anchovies. That is a typical food here, as we are surrounded by the ocean and seafood is one of our main source of food.
I'm not sure if what you've said is true, but maybe on other places.

wow, I thought I liked anchovies, in fact I was pretty dern sure I liked them - in small quantities on pizza or spread on crusty bread - but now now that I have read your brilliant dissertation on the slimy salty disgusting threads of snozzola I don't reckon they sound all that appealing to me.
WHAT WAS I THINKING?
