We have two cats, and we have tried everything to get rid of fleas. Unfortunately, nothing works. Can you give me any suggestions? Thanks!

I posted this question in the late fall and one of the resposes I got was to bath them with Dawn dishsoap and also dilute it with water in a squirt bottle and spray the house with it. It worked and is very inexpensive.

Dawn dish soap if for dishes not animals. Dawn like any other soaps not meant for cats will dry out skin and can be harmful. It may kill fleas but do you really want to potentially harm your pet?

When we catch a flea, we put it in soapy water. It kills the flea right away. I didn't realize you coud bathe the cat in it. I'm afraid they would lick the soap off themselves before we could rinse it off.

Never Ever use anything unless it is specifically made for use on cats. Dish soaps and people shampoos can harm pets and will dry out their skin.

OMG! I would rather use dishsoap than put all those chemicals on my pet and then getting them on my furniture were my children and myself sit and sleep. I would think those powders and chemicals are not good for humans as well. As long as you rinse well I see no harm in using dishsoap or people shampoo ( no harmful chemicals)

First of all, be careful when you're treating them with sprays and drops. Too much can be fatal, they can actually get very sick if you wash them in a flea wash, then put a flea collar on. Seek the advice of a vet, most vets will help you out even if you just call them up. Have you treated your house and the areas they frequent for fleas? Quite often this is the problem. It's not enough to just control the fleas on your pets, but you also have to make sure their beds and your carpet is free of fleas and their larvae.

if you ever find out a sure (and non dangerous) way - please let us know! I dread having the cats if for no other reason than the fleas. we never had fleas till we got cats. the poor dog just goes mad with them, though they do not seem to irritate the cats much. I've used frontline plus ($$$$$) but did not see any improvement with it. a flea dip is good - but it is not something I want to use. we could bomb the house, but you know, I am just not comfortable with doing it and having the chemicals all over everything in the home.

I use frontline plus and then I use to spray the yard with some stuff so that when it's really bad i have taken care of some of the outside and the frontline takes care of the inside and you can use frontline twice a month if you have a really bad infestation. but if it's to bad you might want to get a professional to come through and take care of it. Good luck.

I always use dishsoap on my dogs and cats. None of my animals have fleas (as of right now). Sometimes they will get them in the summer. So I bathe them in the summer a few times a month. In the winter fleas tend to not really be around as much anyways. We put our dogs in a tub like thing and hold them there, if you watch the fleas go to the top of the dog cause they cant breath under water (the ones that dont die from the soap). Then we pick them off and kill it. It takes a bit of time but id rather take the time and be flea free. And usually my dogs will stay flea free for a long time. We get strays around a lot that pass it to them every now and then

I usually use front line but for small puppies, the Dawn with vinegar in it works well because they say the fleas are killed by the vinegar.

I suggest using the borax floor treatment as well as a spot on treatment - like Advantage or Frontline (if your cats are allergic there are oral meds they can be given). You should vacuum really well, washing their bedding/any place they sleep, and bathe them in warm water in dawn before using the spot on stuff.

I guess you have to take them to your vet. There are many choices in the market, I hope you vet is able to recommend something that works for your cats. It's a pity when they are flea infested. It makes them unhealthy too, and our health compromised as well. It's good to pay careful attention to flea problems. In this way we show our concern for our pets because they deserve no less. Goodluck.
