I want to lose just a few pounds before summer get here. I had the flu...lost five pounds and since then have lost just two more. I can't seem to lose anymore no matter what I try! It gets depressing when you are trying your best and cutting back and then there is no progress! Do any of you have any tips that might help move my weight loss along? Or do you struggle to lose just a few yourself? THanks in advance!

Here is what I think, and it works for me. It's all metabolism. I eat anything I want and I weigh 110 lbs., and I'm 61 years old hon. I read once (about 30 years ago)from a book that was written by a professional sports doctor. What he said made sense to me, and I've followed it till this day. You need to eat, in order to keep your weight where it's at, or to lose weight. Of course, if you are going to want to lose weight, you have to watch WHAT you are eating, which means you can't just eat potato chips, fast foods, chocolate, etc, and of course a little exercise doesn't hurt either...you get my drift I'm sure. BUT, you do have to eat, like every few hours. Snack on vegetables, fruits, things that are good for you, just make sure you eat. Even if it's cereal. If you try to lose weight by not eating, your body takes control and thinks it's starving...like you're lost in the woods somewhere. It doesn't know the difference, understand? So in return for thinking it's starving, it will take energy from your muscle tissue, rather than your fat tissue. Boy, I hope I'm explaining this correctly, I know what I mean, just not sure if I'm saying it properly, haha. Did you ever see a starving child? They have no muscle mass, thin arms and legs, skeleton like faces, but huge stomaches. This is what I'm talking about. Their bodies are living off any muscle tissue that's available to keep alive. Their metabolism is all messed up, so the body does what it has to do. If you eat every few hours and exercise a little (housework helps too), you increase your metabolism tremendously. Your body feels safe, therefore will start burning off calories to live on, and not take from your muscle tissue. Am I rock solid?, HAHA, oh heck no, but I can eat whatever I want without gaining weight.......it works for me, and might just work for you. I hope I explained this all correctly and I wish you luck on your journey.....take care jill!

Wow this is a very good explanation! When I'm on diet my metabolism goes down and when I start to eat I get fat. I think I'll do like you've said

Its not just dieting that will do it though...you need exercise as well..I personally DON'T diet..I refuse to becuase it IS depressing..I DO however watch what I eat, my portions etc etc and i try to make healthier choices but dieting I can't do..I love food too damn much LOL....I DO exercise regularly though which IMO is as if not MORE important than watching what you eat....

The only two things I can suggest is drinking alot of water and get plenty of exercise. I use to drink so much instant Folger's cappicino at home and stopped this habit and also quit drinking Pepsi. Too many sweets in my system even though I don't have to worry about weight. I don't exercise in the winter but do some walking in the warmer seasons.

I am sorry you feel depressed with dieting. Why not go to the gym and do some fat burner exercise.Aside from that eat less on carbohydrates..less rice..and bread. Go on a veggie and fruit diet that would work. Good luck :)

I am not much of fruits but love the veggies. And it's back to the bike for me! I know I need more exercise and hopefully will get back into the swing of things.

Argh, we are in the same situation. I badly needed to reduce. Good thing you have lost some weight. I have been reducing and exercising for around three weeks now and I find myself not losing any. Maybe I should work harder. May I recommend that you should incorporate exercise too in your dieting. A lot of people are getting great results with exercise and a good diet. If your just bored with the thought of exercise, then do something that you really love. Like dancing or playing active sports.

Dieting used to be a depressing topic for me because it seemed that no matter what I tried it didn't work. I have finally figured out what works, it takes time, but you are only supposed to lose between 1-2lbs per a week anyways, so it works. You just need to be able to stay motivated - not so much will-power, but understanding that it might take 5-10 weeks for you to get to whatever weight you want. Depending on how much weight you want to lose it could take a year! To lose weight you need to take your current weight and multiply it by 7, that is how many calories you are supposed to be eating in a day, not less than that , not more than that. It helps boost your metabolism while "starving" your body of some calories to help you drop the pounds. You also need to incorporate some type of cardio and strength training exercises. Walking, jogging, elliptical, weight lifting, etc. I have lost 12lbs since Christmas. I am doing the "Biggest Loser Million Pound Match Up" and having a community that is supportive of weight loss helps.

I sympathize and empathize. Eat 5-6 small meals a day, more protein than carbs, drink 6-8 glasses of water and take a few brisk walks a week, if not try everyday if you can. That will keep the metabolism going.

I am one of the lucky ones that have never had to deal with any weight problems, i am SURELY not bragging, but i am saying that i am greatful! Thank you mom and dad for the great metabolism. I do do a lot of walking though, i walk everywhere as i dont have a car. Walking helps a lot, even if you only walk a half an hour a day, and just stroll along and check out the scenery. I know its not always plausible due to either weather or health conditions, but if you can, try to do a little extra walking, and drink lots of waters ;) Eat healthy, and dont starve yourself! ;)

I have the same problem. It seems like when I do get in the right direction all of a sudden it STOPS! like its just teasing me I weigh myself once a week the same time the same day and this time for week #2 I've been stuck at this weigh for 2 weeks. But I did read that after a period of time your weight do go to a stand still or slow up, especially if your exercising because now the fat is turnong into muscle.

Hey, take it easy. Sometimes you hit a plateau when trying to lose weight. If your present diet is not working for you, try something else. A good combination of diet and exercise should have some positive effects on your body.

Weigh watchers is a great diet to be on. And if you do it right boy the food you can eat. I went to the first meeting just to get the food scale to get my points for each thing I ate unless you eat the weight watcher meals they have the points on the box. I was on it July 2007 to Oct 2007 and lost 40 lbs. For health reasons (nothing from the diet) I had to go on medical leave and stopped driving so I'm stuck in the house 24/7 and got depressed and gained my weight back. I eat when I'm depressed. Well I have to come to deal with it cause I'm off work till Jan. 2009 now. So today I start Weight Watchers again. And it does help to have a buddy or even someone just to talk to. By the way the WW Meetings are great! Havfaith

yeah from the looks of dieting i think its really a pain.. (even though i dont diet)... i suggest that you do jogging every morning maybe up to 30 mins or so.. so that you may lose some calories.. and ofcourse exercising and stretching are the best to get you into shape.. its best that you don't get lazy when you do this things.. trust me just do some jogs and exercises and you will get to shape.. i learned this from my brother because for once he did diet.. and he did these things and as a result his now fit enough.. try asking some proffesionals and ask for some advice..

I have few pounds that I want to get rid of before summer comes too. Don't be depressed if you don't see any result on what you do.. Try this, my husband's friend is doing this, so I think it's effective. Like the the first poster said it's all about the metabolism. He eats every 2 hours, light meal though, like he would be just snacking on something, he doesn't eat heavy meals in a day, if there is, that would be just breakfast. He doesn't deprived himself from comfort foods, you wouldn't believe he eats ice cream, and fruit bars! those could be fattening..But he said he doesn't eat as much on those..it's always light meals every 2 hours. With this your body is working to burn the calories double time, since you're eating everytime. I tried doing this, but sometimes I forget discripline, lol. I eat a lot every 2 hours! but the good thing, Im dont weigh that much. I do exercise 20minutes a day, and drink a lot of water. Don't punish yourself with kinds of diet you have to take. Do what I do, but I think I should do more exercise so im shedding off a lot of unwanted fats... Goodluck!

Hey dieting is not depressing. It is a useful way for a healthy life. By restricting your diet, you are giving rest to your stomach and digestive organisms to serve you better. Even in old days, dieting was called on the other hand fasting. If you work more than your usual hours you get irritated, if you work less than your usual hours you get relaxed. Like this the organs in our body. Periodically we need to go for medical check up. If one has high blood pressure irrespective of the age, then he should start avoiding pickles, masala items, there by he control the blood pressure; sugar patients should invariably go for dieting, avoiding sweets, aloo vegetable, intake of water, so that they can have better respiratory system, renal system. At the age of 40 plus dieting is the best medicine for a re-birth.
