Which Is Your Favourite, Home-Baked, Savoury Pie?

Soon, I shall be going to bake a pie for my dinner. I have some Steak and Kidney in the fridge and have just put that on to cook with some onion, before making a short crust pastry and baking my pie.
I haven't seen Steak and Kidney in the shops for ages, so when I saw it recently, I bought some, because I love the flavour, in both pies and puddings. I shall make some roast wedge potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots to complement it, and I can't wait, now for dinner time. In fact, the smell of the Steak and Kidney cooking is nourishing a craving for my pie.
What is your favourite, home-baked, savoury pie? Is it Chicken and Ham, Chicken and Leek, Steak and Kidney, Steak and Ale, Bacon Roly Poly, or some other filling? I remember when I was young, we were in a recession and to save money, my Mum used to cook up a Corned Beef and Baked Beans Pie, every Monday, lol. It sounds unusual but I loved it... as we all did.
Do you often bake your own pies and puddings, and what type of pastry do you use? Please share with us.

I've never had any of the pies you've mentioned.
I'm from the states and as you've seen we mostly have fruit pies over here :)
I do love chicken pot pies & beef pot pies though!!
And I certainly wouldn't mind trying the Chicken & Ham pie!! I LOVE chicken!
But as far as desert / fruit pies I do make a mean apple pie & a mean pumpkin pie. Though I've never made my own shell before. I usually get a refrigerated roll of it from the supermarket and use it. The idea of making one scares me LOL. I'm too afraid I'll mess it up :) One day though I do plan on trying it out.

Lol... I make my own pastry because I like it made with margarine, or butter if I'm making fruit pie. I like apple pie with sultanas and cloves added. Yummy!
When I went to Oregon, I noticed that you have a lot of cream pies... and I mean, a lot, so I sampled a few of those. :) I particularly like Key Lime and Florida Orange pies. We get them over here, but boy, they're nowhere near as good as in your country. The Key Lime pie I had there was sooooooo deep and tasted a lot of lime. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

I totally forgot about the creme pies LOL. The things you take for granted. We don't eat them all that much in our home though. We are fans of the banana cream and chocolate *yummy*.
I've never had the two you tasted though :)

Is there nowhere you can buy home-baked pies, like a farm shop, or somewhere like that? We do have those here as will for people who prefer not to mess about baking them. They're very good and you can buy an organic range as well.
Thank you for your contribution and Brightest Blessings. x

LOL When I first read your topic I was thinking Apple and Pumpkin Pies then I read the whole discussion and realized what you were talking about. Most of the types you've mentioned I've never tried but I have made a large chicken pot pie type of pie before. Chunks of chicken, mixed veggie's and cream of chicken soup. All of it in a regular pie crust with another crust on top. I haven't made it in a long time but it is really good.

Steak and mushroom pie - definitely 100%! We all love that in our house! I make the gravy really thick and tasty too, just wish I knew how to make my own rather than having to use Bisto though! It is really good if you make the filling in a slow cooker first too - so tender and now I am hungry and I don't even have any in the freezer ...........

I like to add Bovril cubes x 2, to the pan whilst the meat is cooking, then when the meat is cooked, pour a little of the stock into a measuring jug, or something, and add a rounded tablespoon of cornflour. Mix this to a paste and add it to the pot, simmer for one to two minutes, stirring all the time, and you'll end up with a nice, thick, sauce-like gravy, which is full of beef flavour. :)
I added sliced mushrooms to my steak and kidney and it worked a treat! The pie was delicious. I finished it off for lunch today. Mmmmmm.
Yes, the meat is much nicer for being cooked in the slow cooker, but if you're going to make gravy the way I told you, I would transfer it to a saucepan first, in order to save it sticking to your slow cooker. :) Sorry I made you crave for pie! (((hugs)))

I've done a few types of pies..good old chicken pot pie (which reminds me haven't done in ages)---another favorite is a traditional Spanish type empanada...but my all time favorite is from a recipe I got from Justin Wilson..his Louisiana Meat Pie...it's basically chopped meat (any kind will do..hamburger, chopped turkey, etc) with butter beans, onions, garlic, all in a pasty tomatoey sauce and a lot of cayenne!! It's definitely not for the faint of heart or should I say tongue?? For each of those pies I've always used the flaky pastry dough
In case you're interested...here's a link to that recipe

The meat pie does sound quite nice. I'll pop over and have a look. Thank you for the link.
They make kind of pot pies in our pubs, if they're what I think. They put the meat and veg in a deep dish, then put puff pastry on the top. Is that the ones?
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend and thank you for your contribution. xxx

Hi Darkwing! I really don't know how to bake pies nor bake anything. But I have the chance to taste "Shepherd's Pie" when I was in London two years ago. I really love it and it is one of the things I missed there. Oh, now I have an idea..maybe I will try to teach myself baking pies...I hope it isn't difficult. Just my thoughts dear friend! Take care and have a nice day!

No, it's not difficult at all, my friend, and pies are delicious.
How coincidental is that. I've re-started my diet now I have bought some new and decent scales, and for dinner, I have just made myself a diet shepherd's pie. I replace the mashed potato on the top with mashed cauliflower, thus illiminating a lot of the carbs, and then sprinkle it with grated cheese, for added flavour and crispness on the top. I just came back from turning on my oven to warm!

It just goes to show that your dough couldn't have been too bad then! lol.
As for the kidneys, I think a lot of people don't like the sound of them, so don't try them. It depends which ones you have but some are good. They have a very strong taste, but when mixed with steak, they're very nice. I used to buy pork chops in the old days, with kidneys in... I always made sure they had the kidneys included, if not, I didn't buy them. You can't get those nowadays. xx

Mmmmmmm, that sounds really nice, my friend. A biscuit crust would just about give it the finishing touch. I like my meat, but for a vegetarian, and indeed for a change for a meat eater, that would be great.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

Home made pies are the best as thier flavour is different than the mass produced pies made for the supermarkets.i used to like steak and kidney puddings from the chip shops in the sixties but I haven't had one of them in many a year. Hmmm yum.You have just made me so hungry after that so I am having some beans and sausage for a snack.
Brightest blessings.

There's a piece of pie left over here, if you'd like me to send it in the e-mail! :) I like steak and kidney pudding too, but I don't make mine with suet, nor do I use suet in my dumplings, but that's a different story. lol.
I'm sorry I made you hungry but sausage and beans is good... I like the pork and leek. Swap a sausage for a piece of pie? ha ha ha.
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend, and bon appetite. x

I used to do a lot of baking from scratch. But now, I cheat and buy the frozen ones. It is so time saving. Pop it in the oven before dinner. Serve it for dessert. I love apple, blueberry and cherry pies. I have such a sweet tooth. I do enjoy pot pies to snack on. I will cook one up and serve it over a bed of white rice.

All of that sounds delicious, my friend. I like fruit pies too and I love some of your cream pies, you have over there. I'm rather partial to Key Lime and Florida Orange Pies, and their so much better in the States. The ones we have here are really small and nowhere nea so deep.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for you input.

I love pumpkin pies also. You will have to take what you have learned here about pies and share that info with your friends there. Eventually, you will have lots of deep pies to eat because all your friends will be making them and of course they will have to share with you as a thank you. *wink*

I like Chicken and Leek pies but your Steak and Kidney puddings used to be good. I miss those. I only get them if we buy the ready made ones in the shop and they're not the same. Yours were much tastier.
I've just remembered a time when Tim and I were going to Nan's on the bus after having your steak and kidney pie for lunch. He got a fit of the burps on the bus and each burp smelled stronger of steak and kidney. lol. He stunk the bus out. I was glad to get off there it was so embarrassing.

The roast beef and potato pie sounds good. I like shepherd's pie and cottage pie, and when I put the potato on the top, I grate cheese over it, so that it browns and crisps up the top and adds extra flavour. It's yummy that way!
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your input.

Eating and eating? Sometimes I get over that by making a batch of pies which are not too large, and freezing them. They're always at hand then, and I feel it's time saves.
Yes, chicken is good, and all sorts of combinations can complement it, like leek, mushrooms, ham, etc.
Brightest Blessings my dear friend and thank you for your input.

Of the choices available, I'd have to go with Chicken and Ham! :) When I think of pies I think of the sweet kind filled with fruit for the most part (my favorite of those is blueberry). I don't bake my own but I wish I did, because my mother will every once in a while and going home is a little difficult what with my busy schedule. ^_^ Yum!

We have lots of savoury pies in the UK, not just the choice I've given. There are also chicken and mushroom pies, steak and mushroom, roast beef, pork pies, cornish pasties, etc. etc. We'll put more or less any kind of meat and complementing vegetable in a pie. Most have onions in for added flavour, and favourite additions are small amounts of carrots, peas, mushroom and leeks.
We have fruit pies too, popular ones being apple, apple and blackberry, apple and sultana, plum, rhubarb, cherry, apricot, etc etc, but we don't have blueberries here, or not abundantly. I did, however, notice a farm shop nearby, about six miles away from my home, which sells them, so I might try some this year.
Maybe your Mum would teach you how to bake blueberry pie when you next visit. It not, it's easy enough to buy a pack of pastry and just roll it out, stew the blueberries and put them together to make a pie. Just a suggestion.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your input.

My husband's family is french Canadian, and they make a pie called tourtiere. It's basically ground pork and onions with spices. I love it. My husband likes when I make it also.

I make a mean chicken pot pie. I just use a store bought pillsbury pie crust. Then I mix a can of veg-all with some cooked chicken cut up. Then i make a gravy/sauce with flour and butter and mix it with the veg/chicken mix. then i dump it all in the pie and put the other crust on top. its really good.

Mmmmmmmm... that sounds delicious. I did add a few sliced mushrooms to my pie in the end. I saw them in the fridge and thought they'd go well with the steak and kidney. lol.
It's all in and cooking now, so I can't wait. :) Thank you for your contribution and brightest blessings.

I love the flavour of kidney. It's quite strong but it's good with steak. My dad used to fry kidneys to go with his full English breakfast. You don't see them about so much now though because the EEC cut them out a lot. That's why I was so eager to get some... messes up the French and their silly ideas, and I haven't had it for ages. lol.
It was yummy too, with added sliced mushrooms in the pie. Brightest Blessings. xxxxx

I don't make pies with meat. So, my favorite is a dessert pie. I make a Pumpkin Cheesecake Swirl Pie for Thanksgiving. That is my favorite homemake pie. I make the crust from scratch using pecans which I chop up in a food processor, ginger snaps that I pound into fine crumbs and butter. It is so good and both the hubby and I look forward to it every year for Thanksgiving. I also make a really good apple pie but, I can't locate the recipe. I'll have to see if I can dig it out and make it sometime soon.
