I often give them money, or buy them a coffee although once my son who was 16 at the time and his girlfriend, but this man a cup of coffee from macdonalds because it was a freezing cold night, the man throw it at them, he didn't want coffee he wanted money to buy beer with.
I thought that was so awful but told the kids never to stop doing good for the unfortunate because of this one stupid man.
today I hear that 9 universities across canada including my old alma mater in montreal - concordia university is staging a sleep out in the cold to raise money for the homeless.
Do you help the homeless? If so how? Do you have any homeless stories to tell?

I have a couple of younger kids that would be homeless if they didn't stay with me. Thier families are a mess and the kids would be just staying wherever thier friends would let them for the night.
So, I am up to nine people in my house. I don't know how I do it on the food, but the Lord provides for all of us.
I do give this one lady money that needs money for food, she is out almost everyday, but I only give to her when I can, because we are so short on funds as it is now.
I am hoping that when my one son gets locked up in JJC next month, they don't take HIS SSI check off of us because then we would would be homeless ourselves.

I have taken in homeless people myself. It is just so hard to live, I know what it is like for them, I live well below the poverty line myself.

At times.
I dont like when people say " they do this or that with the money " how exactly would they know ? I mean and if they do , use the money on unnecessary things, then so be it , At least God will be thankful of us for trying.
I've seen people give them food and drinks ( water, coffe ,soda etc.) When i was in middle school , which was not that long ago , I went to a school downtown , (which in most areas thats where you spot them out most )and they're where tons of Homeless people out and it made me feel so sad because just looking at them and looking at us , is very sad.

I help the homeless when ever I can. Though I rarely give cash. There is a man in town though that isn't homeless but he is on SSI and when ever he gets sick, its either buy medications or food. I sometimes give him money when I see him. When I see a person with a sign that says will work for food. I got to the store and buy a bunch of food, that will not spoil and take it to them. I have never had anyone be rude about it.
I also belong to a group call Invisible Youth Network, which helps homeless teens. Matter of fact 5% of all my online profits from my Avon website goes to the IYN. I was a homeless teen growning up, so it hits home with me. Makes me feel good to know that I am giving back something that other people gave to me, food, warm clothes, a safe place to lay my head.
You never know when it could happen to you. Helping others when you can help, ensures that when you need help, it will come back around to you. I strongle believe in Karma, what goes around comes around.

Hi Rose,
It never failed to humble me to think that I am blessed to have the basic necessity in life. To show my gratitude, I'm donating money every month to a charity for the homeless children.
5 years ago, My best friends and I started a yearly ritual of collecting old clothes, books and toys. We will also buy canned goods and sacks of rice and spread it to the different institution for the homeless people.

Since it wasn't that long ago that I was homeless and my city has a lot of homeless people I help them whenever I can. I usually see them hanging around a local dunkin donuts and if I can afford it I will buy them coffee and a donut. I also save soda cans and bottles and when I see someone walking by my apartment with their grocery cart I give them what I have.

I do not go out and take money from my purse and give them or invited them home or give them a cup of coffee, but I do help the poor and indigent. I do it through giving offerings at church or if there is a special event sometimes held to help the Downtown mission. Now there are some that will go down and work at the soup kitchen, but I do not drive a car, so I do what I can. There are no homeless stories I can tell. It gets rather cold in the winter, and aside from the guys outside of the department stores with a sign, I have hardly seen any homeless perosn to recognize them as such.

yes I do although I do not give them money. I am part of a very small charity run by a group of us, we do lots of things but we also make wash bags which have things like small bars of soap, toothpaste, toothbrush etc in them. We make them out of face flannels, these then go to another charity that help the homeless and are distributed to people on the streets.

Where I used to live there were tons of homeless. but I also lived in the center of a bigger city. You couldn't walk a block without being hit up for change. Alot of the guys were pushy and kinda acted like they deserved it. If They were nice, and not one of the regulars I would offer to buy them food, or a meal. Or give them a bus ticket, but I wouldn't give them cash. Sadly most of them were only out there for booze money.

I used to help the homeless ,but now I doubt it.Some of them
just fake ,maybe they have much more money than myself.
When I was a little girl an old man asked me for moneny 'cause he want some money to buy a ticket .I gave him the money,he went away thankfully. But not for a while he asked for me again in another place,I said you've asked me once.
a couple of days later I encountered the same old man at the
bus station, can you believe it,he asked me for money again.
I was too upset and mad,I felt cheated.
There are so many homeless people in my country. In fact most of them just cheat for money.I don't like that.I have
seen the same old trick too many times,I won't fall again.
Maybe I will give them money once I can tell they are not cheating.

No. I give them money when I can. I give them food when I can. I support shelters with donations of food , clothing, bedding and things like that but what I should be doing is writing my congressman, my senator, my president, my editors.
.
Having just put that thought in writing I think I'll do just that. The homeless problem has been out of control forever and the new economy or lack thereof is just going to make it worse. It's time to get off my rump and become proactive and demand more from my government.
.
Care to join me?

Keep doing what you are doing. SPEAKING UP is the best thing we can all do. Keeping this issue in the eye and hearts of the public is the best chance we all have of getting our government to act.
They have the ability to take the pressure off people who are in your situation but it means less profit for the corporations. If we boycott those corporations and put public pressure on them things just might improve.
It's worth a try and it's something I feel is worth my effort no matter the payoff.
At least we tried.

That is very nice of you and your son. I have helped the homeless also. I haven't been able to buy them things personally just because they weren't around a place for me to buy them something when I seen them. I have given them clothing and food though.
It is so hard to feel sorry for some homeless people though because alot of them choose to be that way instead of trying to make thier life better.
That guy was very rude to your son. Your son did a good deed and did not deserve that.

Yes I do help the homeless, usually I will give them money. But I wont help any homeless that appears drunk etc, because I want the money to be spent on their food, not on booze....
I have never bought them meals or coffee though, I think Im too coward for that.
