If you had to choose between blind and deaf which would you choose?

I think I would pick blind over deaf although neither would be a good thing. I would prefer to be blind because there is a lot of ugly things in life to see. I would hate to be deaf as I love music too much to never be able to listen to it again. I would miss the singing of the birds. The purr of my cat. The sound of the first lawnmower of spring. What about you, if you had to choose one affliction what would it be and why?

I would choose to be deaf. You can still do things around you. Chat and surf the internet etc. I couldnt stand not being able to see.

Sometimes I wish I could just turn off the noise in the world around me but I think if that noise was taken away from me permanently I would miss it terribly.

I would choose to be deaf because I am scared of the dark.

I don't mind the dark too much but if I had to see nothing but dark it would be horrible. Never to see all the colours of the rainbow again...

I would pick deaf because I don't know what I would do if I never seen my kids again. I would rater watch them live then listen to them live.

The more responses I get the more I realize how important sight is.

I wouldn't choose to be either, and I sincerely hope neither affliction ever comes to me, or anybody else for that matter, but if it came down to an ultimatum, then I would have to choose to be deaf. I love to be at one with Nature, and to walk in the countryside. I don't know how I'd cope without being able to see the seasons change, the colours and Nature's rebirth in Spring, colours in Autumn, a blue sky, the ocean, and baby animals being born. I could certainly do without hearing some of the sounds, like a fierce wind, people arguing and shouting at each other, etc, etc, although I would miss the more pleasant sounds like the laughter of children, the dawn chorus, animal sounds, the church bells, music and many many more, but my sight is very valuable to me. Brightest Blessings.

I too love nature and those are the sights I would miss the most. I really love the changing of seasons. I would never wish the loss of either of these senses even on my worst enemies.

I have given this some thought. I would still have the independence of driving if I lost my hearing.

I live with someone that is visually impaired. I can assure you that as much as she enjoys hearing things, if she could trade sight for hearing, she'd probably give it up.

I can understand that. Even negotiating a curb when walking can be taking your life in your hands! It would be great if by some miracle all deafness and blindness could be cured.

I love driving too, that would be one of the hardest parts of losing sight for me.

OMG that's awful LOL...If I had to choose I would choose being deaf because I would rather see things. If I still had my sight I could still read, watch TV (subtitles), go on my PC, and all that stuff but if I were blind, everthing would be dark. Sure, I would hear things but I think without sight, I would rather not live....

It sure would be a big adjustment to make without sight. I think that would be when you would find out who your true friends are.

As much as I love sounds (music, nature etc etc) I'd much rather be deaf than blind...I love to SEE the world, I love to SEE my children and the ones I love and cherish..if I were to go blind I think that would be just far too difficult on me..but being deaf you can always FEEL the music at least ya know and you can still see and smell nature etc etc..

I would prefer to be deaf, I to am an avid music lover, but many sounds you can also feel as well as hear, the beat of a base for example...I cant imagine going through life and not see the love in my husbands eyes, or the happiness in my children's faces, watching the leaves fall in spring or the first fallen snow...watching my child perform at the local charity concerts, even tho I could not hear her... Many sounds you can also feel, but to not see visually would mean having to rely on memories or imagination to try and picture the image in your mind...so i would choose deafness.

I often live in my imagination so that wouldn't be too hard for me. I too would really miss nature and the changing of the seasons...

both of them i don't want but you want me to choose so i choose to become a deaf than a blind, you know why? because seeing the wonders of life is the most important...you can see the beauty of every individual...if you are blind you missed this wonders of life...deaf can't hear but you can speak through sign language.

I can't decide. On the one hand, I would rather be able to see to get around easily. And, I spent a decent amount of money to be able to see perfectly. I had Lasik surgery done 3 years ago so, my sight meant enough to me then to have a scary procedure done to better my vision. I would miss my hubby's face, colors, everything. On the other hand, I would miss the sound of my hubby's laughter, music, also the sound of my cats' purring. But, I could feel my cats' purrs and imagine the hubby's laughter and just remember every song I ever heard. Is it ok if I can't give you an answer? I guess if I had to, I would rather be deaf. But, that is too hard for me to be certain about.

When I started this discussion I thought I would rather be blind but now I'm thinking deaf. I think they would both be horrible but it would be a tough decision as there are so many positives and negatives for both senses. I think my sense of smell I would rather give up if that was an option....

I was born to deaf parents and I was there to see how they handled life and I would choose deaf because not being able to see I feel I would be totally lost. I am slowly loosing my hearing and if it wasnt for my hearing aids I would be deaf and when I take the hearing aids out it is a totally different world. I did go 2 years totally deaf while waiting to raise funds formy hearing aids and I would have to say that at times being deaf was a blessing but in the same sense I missed hearing the birds and wind blowing things that we take for granted. One day go outdoors and just listen to all the sounds that you normally hear but disregard and just listen to the wind blowing through the trees and the birds chirping, Its beautiful. If I had to choose one or the other Id choose deafness as I can still see the birds and watch the wind moving the trees. Jimmy

One spring day I noticed this little sparrow in a tree by the office and he fascinated me and I listened to his song and the rest of the world seemed to disappear around this little bird and for a few moments the tweeting was the only sound I heard. I don't know why this memory sticks out so much in my mind but that is one of the sounds I would miss the most. I bet that although your mom was deaf her other senses more than made up for it and even though she couldn't hear you she probably sensed it when you were getting into mischief. Thanks for an honest answer from someone who knows what it is like to be deaf.

I believe that either would certainly be a life altering experience, however if forced to choose I would have to pick being blind. You just have to close your eyes in a crowded park and listen closely to the sounds you hear. They offer such decsription to the imagination that you can almost visualize the world around you. Being blind would also block out some of the harsh visual realities of the world. I think being deaf would create a better picture of the world!

Would you believe you are the first one other than me that would choose blind! I was a little surprised at the numbers. I think if blind your other senses would be heightened.

I am an avid reader and read a lot daily. If I could not read I would be very upset and unhappy. I would not like to be deaf because I love to hear music and birds and things but I would rather be deaf than blind. However I am afraid I am slowly going blind one of my biggest fears. I am getting cataracts and have no medical insurance. I don't want to be blind but finances might make me so.

My hubby has cataracts too and luckily we have insurance but I can see how his loss of sight is affecting him on a daily basis. I hope you find away to take care of your eyes, it is so important to be able to see. Good luck

If I could choose between the two I would choose to be deaf, I would rather see than hear, people could communacate with you in sign language, or in writting, being blind would be much worse for me.

Oh what a tough question. I have thought of this before and would choose deaf. I could "get thru" life not being able to hear but see? No way. I wouldnt even want to live at all. But you bring up a good point though. No music? Now that would almost be torture. I love music.

I will choose deaf over blind so that I can see the mighty work of the God and enjoy the wonderful things around us. In addition to that I will prefer being deaf so that I would not have to hear any harsh words, gossips etc.,

That is a tough one. I think it depends on how I feel at the time. Many times, certain noises bother me, but other times sounds can be soothing. The same holds true for vision. People live with both conditions so I think I could deal with either of them as well.

I think it would be tough to loose either sense but you are right we would adapt like so many before us.
