I did participate in this for three years - I didn't make it for the first year but the other two years, I made it through and around the 20th day as well! My final year with NNWM was great - I got to try a new genre, I was a Municiple Liason (somewhat like a mod), and I met heaps of equally crazy and problem-plagued writers like myself.
Unfortunately, over the past two years, I have been too busy and too bummed out from a stranger writer's block to participate.
If you're into writing and you need a support group to help you get through your creative down days, NNWM is great...plus writing 50K is not about quality, it's about just blabbing the first thing(s) that come into your mind and taking your story from there.

I have been a participant in Nanowrimo for the past 5 years. I love it! I would definitly recommend it to other writers. It is very inspirational, even if you don't reach the 50,000 word goal. One of the best things is interacting with fellow writers that are all trying to accomplish the same thing. I will continue to participate as long as I can. It's a great motivational tool for me. Just make sure you are prepared before the first of November, because then the heat is on. LOL
