Do you run into people you know when you are shopping?

Today I was at wal-mart and ran into an old friend whom I haven't seen in almost a year and a half! It was so good to see her! I told her I keep thinking I should call her but I was afraid she might have forgotten who I was it had been so long! She is super busy, so I don't blame her for not being good at staying in touch - 3 kids under 5, working part-time, and going to school! We are going to try to get together sometime soon! It is not uncommon for me to run into people i know at stores - it doesn't seem to matter where - i've been on vacation out of state & seen people i know & had lost touch with! It is the strangest thing! I've seen old teachers, old co-workers, old classmates - you name it! Does this ever happen to you?

Sheesh! I responded to this discussion a bit ago when myLot was all glitchey and, it was a nice fat, juicy good response so, I am a bit ticked that it didn't happen! So, I am going to try again but, it won't be anywhere as awesome as my original response...thanks a lot myLot! I do run into some people when I am out and about. But, it tends to be in waves. I will go for a while where I run into lots of people that I know and then, suddenly I can go for months without running into a single person I know. The weird thing is that, the majority of the people I run into are the baristas from my local Starbucks. I don't have a huge gaggle of friends. Really just a few close ones from around the neighborhood and, I only work with my two bosses so, I don't have the co-workers to run into. But, the problem is that I have something that I call situational amnesia as far as people I recognize in public. If I regularly hang out with someone and then I see them im public, no problem. I will recognize them. But, if I see someone like one of my baristas out in public away from the coffee shop, it may take me a moment to connect the dots because I am only used to seeing them there and no where else and only for a few minutes a day, or every other day depending on their work schedule. I know that is awful and I feel ashamed but, it is the way it is for me. I was at the hubby's co-worker's wedding a few months ago and one of the baristas was there passing out the program and pointing people to which side to sit on and she recognized me and asked me how I was. I blanked. I recognized her but couldn't remember where from. Somewhere in the middle of the ceremony, it started dawning on me as I wondered "Starbucks?" Then, as we were sitting and waiting for dinner, Blamo! I remembered for sure that it was Starbucks! LOL!

it is hard to remember so many people - especially in a context you wouldn't think to associate them with like a wedding. thanks for the response - even if mylot DID have some issues earlier! I was having the same problem as you - glad they worked it out!

This happens to me every once in a while and I hate it. Usually if I have loss touch with someone, it is because I do not want them in my life any more. Not necessarily for anything bad. I just do not feel that everyone is menat to be a part of your life for the reat of your life.

Some people are in our lives for a reason, some for a season, and others for a lifetime.

that is a good point. I have wondered about this often, as I have lost touch with so many people...sometimes it is a good thing, other times it really makes you wonder why you lost touch, like two friends who just sort of forgot about each other...

Just about everytime I go to the mall I seen at least 2 people I know. Its in the center of town where everyone goes so its very likely to run into a lot of people. Very recently though I ran into a girl who I met in 6th grade because we were both in the drill team together. I didn't recognize her but she stopped me and asked if my name was Samantha and I said yes, I ended up remembering her. But wow we are both so different I haven't seen her in ages, it was kind of crazy lol. So it's nice seeing people you know different places.

I've had that happen too - a central location would make it seem more likely. One friend I saw she was 9 months pregnant - I hadn't seen her in a good 5-6 years - she was so swollen (poor girl in July, I learned out last summer that being pregnant in the summer is not fun!!!) I only knew who she was because I recognized her mom with her!

In a way, the Wal-Mart in our town, is kind of like myLot! You go there, and you see alot of your friends there, most of your relatives, co-workers, ex-wives, future wives, and you exchange a lot of information and gossip, and not only that, you can shop while you are there!

My hardest part of this is when it's someone I know but I can't place them. I know I know the face but can't put a name to it or where I know them from. I had a woman come up one day and start talking to me like she really knew me...and I kind of recognized her but not enough. It wasn't till several minutes later her son of about 5 came up and she said his name that it hit me that I'd done daycare for the boy years ago. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Yeah, I continously run into people I know when I go shopping. I had moved away from Winnipeg for 5 years and now that I am back, I see people all the time in the stores, that I haven't seen in a very long time. Some of them I may go for a coffee with, but most of them I don't bother with. Just because we know each other doesn't mean we were friends or hung out together, just knew who each other enough to say hello. But some of them were pretty good friends, so I have gotten back in touch with them because of seeing them in a store. I am now moving away again, back to Calgary where I lived for those 5 years I was gone, and I am sure I will now run into people I know in the stores there, that I haven't seen in the last couple years.

it is funny to be reunited at wal-mart or other places but it's true. in the case with my 1 friend so much time had passed but she called me the other day and when the weather breaks we're going to take our rugrats to the park :)

Yes, I have to say it has happened to me a time or 100. It seems when I am out and about is the only time I run into people. Standing in the middle of an aisle chit chatting and catching up. I even have this happen alot when we decide to go out and eat (which isn't often), but low and behold if we don't run into 2 or 3 other couples there.

When I lived in a much smaller town, it happened quite often, now that I am back in the city. It rarely happens. But when I lived in that much smaller town, hardly a day would go buy that I didn't run into someone, while I was out and about.

i think it is more likely in a smaller town, probably just because you know more people! thanks for sharing!

Yes, I will usually run in to someone when I have just run out to get something, and I haven't really done my make up, and I have just thrown my hair in a pony tail. Then I just want to hide.

If that person is my good friend, be sure I will go to say hello to him/her. If not, I will just ignore him/her and I go shopping anyway.

No matter where I go I always run into someone I know. We even go to another town to do our shopping for groceries and run into people from that town. When I worked as a cashier at our Wal-mart I seen past teachers, friends, and even some people that I no longer consider friends. I try to avoid many people by going to a different town because I don't always have time to stop and visit for long periods.

I was a cashier for awhile at different stores also - it is crazy who you see and meet! I don't blame you for driving somewhere different one bit! I still won't step foot into one of the stores i used to work at unless a dire emergency because it will seriously take all day to get out of there while i "catch up" with everyone i used to know there!

Yea I always see ppl when I go shopping. Sometimes its a moment where I dont want 2 see anyone bc I dont look my best or whatever the situation may be. I just like to get my shopping done and get out of there. It's hard when I run into some 1 there that I haven't seen i nawhile. I then tend to stand there n just talk to them for a very long time. When I do that then my shopping takes alot longer then normal. But it's nice 2 run into ppl while shopping that you haven't seen i na long time. It feels good to see them again!
