Pain killers after surgery was optional?

My brothers dog Buddy that has been staying with us went in for his hip surgery this morning. I can pick him up tomorrow morning. They asked me if I wanted him to have pain medicine after his surgery. It was optional. I was like WHAT?!?!? Why would you choose NOT to let your dog have pain killers after surgery? I know I would be pissed if I didn't get pain killers after hip surgery. It was only $20 more for the pain killers. Would you have passed on the pain meds?

I used to work as a Veterinary Assistant, and we always gave medication as part of the surgery. All medication was in the price of the surgery, so it never costed any extra. I think it's rediculous that they would actually make it an option. It just makes me think they don't really care about the welfare of your animals, and that they are putting it in your hands by asking you, when really it is them. How awful. I would of course pay the extra money for the pain pills, but then also find a new vet for my animals.

Yes, when I asked about getting my dog fixed, they said keeping him asleep and the first pain shot after he woke up was included in my price, but all pain meds afterward were optional. That really stunned me. I hate to think any owner actually said no. Especially on a surgery as serious as Buddy's.

No way would I pass on pain killers! Maybe they just had to ask to insure that it would be paid for. I can't imagine anyone denying pain relief to animal or human. Although I know of a few instances where doctors did not want to give morphine to people. I consider this unforgivable, too. When my mother was dieing of pancreatic cancer the doc wouldn't give her any morphine until my father raised a real ruckus. She was in tremendous pain and dieing. Why not give her morphine?!

First of all, of course I would get the painkillers. Why in the world would they be optional? My little guy will be going in for his neutering soon. He is such a mess normally to begin with, I'm sure he'll need the pain pills. My neighbor's dog just went in for his surgery and he sure was a dopey muddled mess for two days after the surgery. He's a big dog and I don't know how they would overdose him. Regardless of how much I have to watch over my dog, he'll be comfortable. whit

I side with you on this one. It is easy for people to pretend that animals don't feel pain. I find that just cruel and inexcusably selfish.

No way. I would have gotten the meds (probably to the chagrin of my husband) but I can't stand to see our pets in pain. It's as bad as seeing your child in pain.

Gosh they NEED pain killers. Why can't they put themselves in their shoes? They have feelings too.

No, I wouldn't have! I have had human surgery myself and it hurt a lot. I wouldn't have put my dog through that with no meds.

Recently, I was talking to my vet about getting Sherlock fixed. She was going over the cost, and told me the first pain shot was free, but if I wanted pain medication for him to take home, it was about 15 to 20 dollars extra. I just looked at her like, what? If I have the money to get my dog fixed, I better be able to come up with the money for the medicine to keep him comfortable. The pain meds are the least expensive part. It would just kill me to watch Sherlock suffer. Especially if I could prevent it.

heck no I wouldn't pass on pain killers for him. I would want them for myself after a traumatic surgery. Why not for the dog? If I were the dog, I 'd want them . I say treat the dog as you would want to be treated. After all there are kids in your house. That kind of pain may make him mean and grumpy. And that can make a pooch a little unpredictable.

I suppose that they offer it as an option because its an extra expense and probably some people dont want the extra expense. I personally would not care on the cost I would rather go without a meal than let my animal go without painkillers and suffer.

Pity i don't keep dogs as pets.but i think Now that you care your dog so much and be wiling to pay so much for his hip surgery, which i think must have cost a big amount of money, 20 dollars is not a big deal.if i were you ,i won't be stingy about the 20 dollars.
