Tuna in oil or Tuna in water?

Last night as I was draining the water from a can of tuna to make my daughter a tuna fish sandwich it occurred to me that we always buy tuna in water. Yet the stores always offer both Tuna in Water and Tuna in Oil. I personally don't like oily fish (except for sardines) and wondered this: Does anyone buy the cans of Tuna in Vegetable Oil, and Why?

I buy my tuna in the oil I think it has a better flavor the tuna that comes in water seems to be bland and I think the oil keeps the tuna fresher.

I only buy tuna in water. I remember growing up we had both in the house because my dad liked the stuff packed in oil, but my mom didn't. I always ate the stuff packed in water. I don't know that I have ever even tried tuna packed in oil before.

I prefer tuna in water, but my husbands prefers tuna in oil because he says it give the tuna, "flavor" I don't think it gives tuna flavor, it gives it an oily texture, but not flavor, I think his taste buds are going.

I remember when that's all that was available, and then they started introducing with water and you had to look to find it. Now I see both, but more of the water than oil. I buy packed in water because I don't need the extra calories. I add enough with the mayo and stuff!

I personally eat Tuna in Water, but my boyfriend's mother likes the Tuna in Oil. I don't think that eating all that tuna in the oil products could be good for you, so I'll stick to eating in water. Besides, by adding mayonaise to your tuna its getting oils into it anyway, why would you want to start out with oil on it already?

i do! i tend to buy a lot of oily fish purely for the health benefits. the oil is (i think!) good for you so i put up with the taste. i am going through a veg and fish eating stage at the moment to aid digestion.

I do not buy tuna in oil because tuna in water is healthier and less calories :) I try to cut those calories any way I can!

Nice topic. I 'buy' the Tuna in water because of the healthy reasons. It is better for your heart and it is better for your weight. I 'prefer' Tuna in oil because I believe it has more flavor. Or it did years ago when I last bought it.

I always buy tuna in spring water - and I like it just fine - there is no oil getting onto me or other things when draining or preparing, so that is also a bonus... but one time I accidentally purchased it in oil and the taste was sooooo much better. I enjoyed it very much, but continue to make my habit of buying tuna in water.

Hi there... Talking about tuna in oil, I dont think its very healthy with all that oil saturated through the fish, but it is very nice compared to that of tuna in water...

I always buy my tuna in water as I am trying to cut way back on fats in my diet, and on calories as well. Iam both overweight and diabetic as well. I do not need a lot of calories from oil and I do love tuna and also cheese 'so I get what oil is allowed in my diet from my cheese and use tuna in water.

I only buy it to make Tuna Olio. It is a sphaghetti noodle dish cooked with tuna fish, garlic and parmesan cheese, it is really good, but you have to cook it with the tuna oil otherwise it is not as good. But for sandwiches, or tuna casseroles I stick with the tuna in water.
