I HATE daycare!

I had to put my son in daycare after 14 months of being able to stay home with him. Since he enrolled (Dec) he has had pink eye, RSV, stomach virus, ear infection, (which we found out he is allergic to antibiotics), rash, and has a runny nose since his first day there. I hate him being sick constantly! Don't get me wrong, I think it has been good for him to play with other kids, but seriously, enough is enough!

My daughter has been in daycare for about 4 or 5 months now and she has not been sick once.. sounds like u should have found a diffrent daycare ALONG TIME AGO. babys die from rsv.... there would be no possible way my kid would go back to the daycare after that!.

Your lucky she has not gotten sick. I'm guessing she is in a home daycare, not a center. I am well aware of what can happen when babies get RSV, but unfortunately, taking him out of daycare and finding another one was not and is not an option. Daycares where we live have waiting lists of a year or more.

I know what you mean. I used to teach preschool and my first year I was sick all the time. It is nearly impossible to prevent the spread of sickness among young children, so when one gets sick, chances are many others will too. But if it seems to be all the time, ask the teachers and center director what they do to prevent the spread of sickness when someone gets sick. Do they send the sick child home? Do they have a regular procedure they follow to disinfect the classrooms and toys? If they don't seem to be doing a good job or taking cleanliness seriously, you may want to look for another center. Daycare can be a good thing, but you don't want your little guy to be sick All the time.

yeah i'm the same way. i decided to not put my daughter in daycare until it was time for her to go to school because i remembered my boys being sick constantly when they were in there. They don't wash their hands enough and all the sick kids are putting every single toy in the mouth to turn around and give to your child. just wasn't worth it, so i'm a stay at home mother still and she's two as i will be until she turns 4 at least and goes to preschool. God bless

I hate to tell you this, but it won't get much better once he gets into regular school. The problem is, so many parents don't realize if a child has a bug and is running a temperature, they are contagious. Many things are airborne, so you're not going to be able to prevent them from picking up vairous bugs. I'm not sure the ear infection was caused by other kids, but the pink eye, viruses and some rashes all can be. I would consider changing day care providers, because it seems there is no monitoring of ill children so they're all going to pass these bugs back and forth between each other. As for his allergy to antibiotics, you weren't exactly clear on that. Has he been proven to be allergic to ALL antibiotics, or penicillin? My youngest is allergic to penicillin, so when he needs antibiotics, he has to take Azythromycin. (Also called a Z-Pak). This is a 5 day dose of antibiotics that actually stays in the system for 10 days. I know in the last 15 years of having kids in school, it's been an endless cycle of illnesses. Strep Throat, flu, stomach bugs, coughs, colds, and even head lice. Parents rarely keep their kids home when they are sick anymore. Jobs prevent it, and sometimes, it's just not knowing they are ill. Anyway, maybe you should start looking for a different day care. Talk to the person that runs it. Do they have any rules regarding bringing sick kids?

I can see where it would be great for him to play with other children but it sounds like the people running the day care place are not watching what is going on. seems to me that they are allowing sick kids there thus endangering all the otherlittle kids when the sick child or children should be home in bed. Pink eye and stomach birus are highly contagious so the persons running this day care center are not insisting that sick kids be taken home to get medical care. I just do not think that they should let really sick children play with the others as these things are super contagious. I used to be a nurses aid and have seen these epidemics among kids.

Actually the daycare has strict policies about picking up sick kids. A lot of times, the illness/virus is spread before the parent knows that the child has it. If the child has a fever or throws up or a sore that can't be covered, they need to be picked up within 30 minutes and in more serious cases they require a doctor's note before returning.

I ran a daycare and afterschool care for over 6 years. Yes there was the odd runny nose but that was ok as long as it did not accompany a fewer! Runny noses dont always mean germs are passed. It could be change of season, an allergy etc. Whether you put your child into a daycare or a school, chances are if there are germs floating around, if your child's immune system is low, they are bound to pick up the germ anyway! Most of the childhood illnesses/diseases like chickenpox measles etc are in my opninion better for them to get before big school so that they dont lose out on any lessons! I have had my whole daycare group(8)all with chickenpox! There was no need for panic as each parent agreed that the sooner their child gets their turn the better. The virus is already passed before the blisters even appear,on any given child. Illnesses like pink eye, tummy virus are serious yes but again, this does not only get passed on at daycare centres. Your main concern with having your precious child in a daycare is that he/she is taken care of PROPERLY. A child that plays up (cries/becomes moody) before being dropped off at daycare is more a concern to me! That is a sure sign that your child is not been taken care of properly or that something there is causing the child to be unsettled! A well settled child should run into daycare as if it was a 2nd home, runny noses and all!

I agree with you completely. I just hated seeing my son go through everything. I realize that this is also building up his immune system and will probably be better next winter.

There are two things you may want to look into. One, the state of hygiene practices at the daycare. Daycares and preschools (and all of the places that take care of young kids) are supposed to go through and disinfect all the toys every week. I've seen it done more when it's peak season for colds and bugs. I'd ask to see what their practices are. If they don't tell you, then I'd be a bit worried about how they handle things. And, the staff must wash their hands. They should be doing it constantly, but at important times during the day, such as meal times and what not, it's important that they wash their hands. Secondly, you might want to inquire about their sick policy with children. I know a lot of daycares tell parents that if their child is sick to take them home or find someone else to take them until they are better. That's the best way to help ward of germs and help prevent the spread. If they generally don't care about kids coming in sick, then I'd suggest that they revise their policy because sick kids come in and just get everyone sick and it just continues to spread it around the entire place over and over again. And, sadly enough, if the illnesses keep popping up, all the kids will need to stay home for a day while the staff comes in and does nothing but disinfect everything. It's the only way to really help prevent the spread of germs.

I think when children first start in these places they do catch just about anything going. All mine were constantly sick when they first started in nursery, and it went on until they began proper school. I think that most of it is because they go from just being at home with their families to being in with a large crowd, and of course germs breed. Also a child has not developed an immune system to certain bugs and so when they become exposed then they are ill until their immune system is up and running. But it is a nightmare, mine always seemed to get sickness bugs all the time.

How big is the daycare center you have him in? My brother had put his son first in a public chain daycare and then later put him in a private home daycare center because of the same issues. Is there a way you can get him into a private daycare center?
