Do you use your parking brake?

I never use my parking brake unless I am parked on a really really steep incline. Other than that I never use it. My dad however always puts his parking brake on. I have been known over the course of my life to destroy his parking brakes! I think when I bought my first car and stopped using his was the best day of his life! How about you? Do you use yours?

I never use my parking brake. The only time it actually does work is when we fix it for inspection yearly. Then I don't use it and it gets tightened or something and won't work. I never had any problem not using it though. I don't know anyone who does use theirs either.

brakes are cheap to fix, the transmission you kill by failing to use your break even on not so steep inclines is quite pricey.

Oh one of our cars is a stick shift and I have this compulsion to use the parking brake on any kind of incline with it. I've tried to get underway with that darn brake on more than a few times. Think I would get the idea. Every time I put the brake on, I say to myself now remember the brake is on!

I had an old Honda Civic that had the parking brake in the middle, I would use it because it was right there and I would forget to take it off almost every time!

I don't ever use my parking brake either. We did used to have a manual transmission car and had to use it then but on our automatic I can not remember one time we have ever used it.

I drive a 5-speed so will usually leave it in gear when parked, so no need to use the parking brake. If I've started the car and leaving it (to warm up in cold weather, etc), I will pull the parking break so my car doesn't wander off!

I use parking brake, whenever theres a heavy traffic on the road, and if my car is in a little inclined position, to avoid, for the car to move backward.

I remember having to do that one of the first times I drove a car. I was learning in a manual transmission and came to a stop on a steep hill when the guy behind me came right up on my bumper. I learned that day how to use the parking brake for the good!

I don't use the parking brake on flat surfaces, but I do on slopes, like my drive way. Its not real steep, but I've been told that it could save my transmission.

Yep, I was told that the transmission only has one pin that holds it in gear and if you use it to park on slopes it can wear it out. It may be wrong, but its what I was told.

Hi there... Yes using the parking brakes for me is quiet a habit, there has not been a time where I can remember that Ive left the hand brake off. I think its a safe habit anyway... Have a great day...

I think it is a good habit to get into. I think my years as a cab driver has taught me bad habits...

I almost never use the parking break unless if I am parked at an angle. My parents use it all the time. When I was 17 my parents bought me a Mustang Convertable. Once in a while my mother would use my car if she wanted to drive with the top down. I remember one day getting into the car, and driving down the road. For some reason the car felt like it had a lot of drag. I was going like 40 mph but the car seemed really heavy. Then I started to smell the burnt rubber. My mother had parked the car with the parking break on. Since I had never used it I failed to check to see if it was on, and I destroyed the break. Lesson learned. Always check your car after someone drives it. Even mom.

I never use mine either. I think the last time I used a parking brake was in Drivers Ed class in high school. Maybe during my drivers test, I am not sure.

It seems like overkill to me as long as the car is in park.

I didn't used to. But recently (like a year ago) I witnessed someone's car roll out of his driveway (a very slight incline, not steep at all) and into traffic where it was totalled. I always use my parking brake now, no matter where I am.

I once drove across the country with my emergency brake on. Not all the way on, but I saw the light when we first set off, and I released the brake but apparently it didn't release all the way. The brake light stayed on but I couldn't get it to go off. When I got to California my brother is the one who found out that the brake had been on the whole 3000 or so miles. I hate emergency brakes and the only time I will use them is if I'm parked on a hill... in San Francisco a good emergency brake is essential.

I hate the emergency brake for that reason I think. I have driven a few cars that the stupid thing got stuck. I love the hills of San Fransisco, I think I would be inclined to use it there.

I have grown the habit of using my parking brake every time. The only time a don't use it is when I've been through flooded road as it stuck up when it dries up, I just gear it up if this happen. I make sure it stay put in every road condition.
