My perspective is that if a child is responsible for cleaning their room they need specific instructions of how to do it. And then they need constant follow-up to see that they have done as instructed. And over time they will develop the habit of doing as they have been taught without so much supervision.
I used to leave my daughters' to their own mess. The rooms became rats' nests! Well, not literally. We never had rats. But it sure looked like it. I refused to go into their rooms - it was dangerous!
But now I think I did them a disservice by allowing them to be so slovenly. What kind of image was I perpetrating by allowing them to live like that? I wish I had done a better job of teaching them to respect themselves enough to treat their property and living space in more order.
I wouldn't expect them to be neat freaks. But they don't deserve to live in such messes.
And I wish I had respected my SELF enough to demand that my house not be disrespected in such a way.
There are reasons I didn't know to do that then. I've learned and grown a lot and look back now with hindsight being 20/20. :-)
I visited one of my grown daughters once and her apartment was terribly messy and disgustingly filthy. I felt sad that I hadn't taught her better.

yes this room is certainly a rats nest for sure.i suppose your right in saying that we probably are doing them a disservice by letting them be like this, but its not from a lack of trying to get them to be tidy, and trying to teach them how to be clean.who knows the answer to this.i have tried.thanks for sharing.cheers sue

Well I truthfully can say that I never found anything under my daughters beds and that's only because for some reason both my daughters liked their mattresses on the floor and not on the rails. But otherwise their rooms were disaster areas that I dare not walk into them.
I do have to say that my oldest 21 year old daughter has moved out, and she does a much better job about keeping things cleaned and picked up than she did when she was at home.

I stopped cleaning my kids rooms when they were really, really young. They were responsible for cleaning their own rooms. If they wanted to live like slobs...their choice. I just closed their bedroom doors. They also did their own laundry starting very young. I stopped even bugging them to clean their rooms after they reached about 3rd or 4th grade. If they want a clean environment then they have to do the work and they did. If i were to go into my 14 yr olds room right now, I guarantee that if there were anything under her bed it would be neatly labled boxes of stuff she has sorted out. Without being told, she just keeps her room clean and organized. She is pretty self-sufficient.

NO NO!!! you can't send her this way! I guess I should have been clearer. Out of 4 girls, I do have one that is very cluttery. She is horrible. I do not and will not clean her room. I have a basket and when she leaves her stuff scattered about the house...I toss it into this basket and deposit it in her room. Over time, she has gotten neater. Things only get just so bad now and then I'll see her cleaning her room . What I was trying to point out to you, is that you should not be cleaning her room for her. Just shut the door and forget that it's there.

Wow! Haha... usually I thought girls don't like messy rooms, so that's something new to me. Hrmm... that's weird, why won't she have you clean or go into her room? I mean... you are doing the work anyway, unless she wants some privacy? But still... what is there to hide from her own mother.

Well my room used to be like that especially under the bed! I used to tidy my room by putting everything under the bed :P
Now I'm at Uni and so everything under my bed is a bit more organised - there are boxes containing my underwear (because my room is quite small and I don't have enough wardrobe space) and my suitacse as well as some carrier bags. As for my room back home I think my mum uses it as storage space, she has what is like a large drawer on wheels that she can slid in and out from under the bed - very useful!

Been there, done that far too many times. My niece (whom I help raise) just cleaned her room but she seldom gets under the bed area. I really do need to check it but I'm afraid too. Call me a coward but I don't want to know what all is under there right now. Of course it probably helps that I did clean out under it about a month ago so that should mean I don't have any penicillin growing under there but one never knows for sure.

Next time I want a dump truck. Make it a lot easier, that or a back hoe :) You are lucky you caught it in time. We live in Florida and sadly there are some nasty bugs that come with being here and they love trash like that. We try to keep up on it because of it. I don't need to encourage them at all.

That reminds me of how my brothers were when we were kids...LOL! My dad and mom would always nag us about cleaning our bedrooms everyday. Well, we would clean our rooms. Then when we looked into our brothers' room everything appeared nice and clean. But when you look under their beds....OMG! Everything would be under those beds! I guess that wasn't an unusual thing for kids, huh!

I would find nothing! Not for lack of my 4 year old effort. We bought a bed with drawers attached at the bottom. So there is NO under of her bed.BUT there is a between the bed and the wall. Having looked there were pony tail holders and dolly barretts and some pennies from her bank. When daddy moves the bed she will clean it up.(The sucker is heavy!) But nothing to the scale that you describe. We started early with a quote from my mom "A good house is a clean house is a happy house" At four that works. WHY are you cleaning her mess. I'd sure be making her clean that yuck. You are a nice mom.I wouldn't be.

Yikes! Sounds like you really had a lot of work to do! I find similar things under my son's bed...plus toys and lots of crumbs from cookies he snuck off with! our own bed can sometimes collect quite a bit under it - i try to keep up with it but it's hard to remember to look there!

I am not happy to hear that really. Because she is a lady, and not very young after all you say she's 17. I am not sure about the teenagers in your place but a lady with the age of 17 would like to keep her room tidy really, at least in my area they usually do. When I recall my childhood memories, even when we were 8 or 9 years old, a girl friend of me would never let us to sit on her bed because she tidied it by herself :)
Oh, how nice days they were.. I just missed my childhood..
I think you should speak with your daughter after all. There is no need to keep her room that dirty. Even I (as a boy) have messed up lots of things but not that much. Maybe she needs to tell you something, and has something in mind that keeps her too busy to do anything else.

I do not have that problem as all the kids beds do not have an underneath! One way to solve that problem ah! But I know how disgusting they can be as I remember being pretty disgusint myself and my mum used to find jars of mouldy peanut butter and mouldy bread and crisp packets, hundreds of them where I used to just fold them up and slide them down the side. Oh and mouldy cups, it was mainly food with me. I am very pleased to say I am no longer that disgusting!

yeah she is always tryin on my shoes then hiding them under her bed so that way she can play with them another day. i think she pays attenton which pair of shoes i wear the least so that way she can take them and play with them.it is funny to me also because she speaks so well when i ask her why she prefers to hide things under her bed. she politely says well mom i jus want to keep them safe. shes a character. she'll keep anyone laughing

First of all, ew! I'm 18 and I could never let my room be that messy. My mom used to clean my room all the time when I would be gone for a few days and even I was scared of what she'd find. (Not that I keep anything inappropriate, just my friends are in here a lot so who knows) I would never keep like food or empty/dirty dishes around my room though. I never let my mom in my room either unless she's got something that's mine or she's done my laundry for me(I usually do my own, but my mom does it once in a while for me) But WOOWWW.. I'd have a talk with her if I were you. I know my mom would just lay the stuff on my floor and tell me to clean it up/put it all away on my own.

My parents let me do the 'emptying-out-the-trash-out-of-my-bed' part, but house help sweep the dust away.
Since I am the daughter, what my mom would probably find are boxes. A bunch of 'em. I keep a lot of sentimental things back in high school. The school paper, invitations, awards and medals from class, even letters from exes.
Yep, you'd find those stuff, but you won't find stuff like--underwear or anything under that category. My bed may be gross, but not that much. It's still liveable; thank you very much.

i wonder how she could have slept in there at all with all that junk.i know under the bed is a good storage place ,as you say if things were all neatly packed in boxes, but i think she just threw it all under the bed and said her room was clean.cheers sue

Haha, oh no! I am 15, as I am on my Dads account, and my mum ALWAYS tidies my room. However, she doesn't really check out under my bed. It has two draws under it full of old cuddly toys that never see daylight and old board games! Then behind those two draws are loads of boxes full of art stuff and basically a load of other stuff that never sees daylight either!
I do think it is an effective way to make a room look tidy though. Though I suppose it would be better to give some of the stuff to charity rather than it staying under my bed for years...
