Your opinion on dog hair ribbons?

Obviously putting ribbons in dogs' hair makes them look extremely cute (sometimes even too cute) but seriously, it's only for the owner's satisfaction. The dog doesn't walk around thinking "man I look hot with my little pink gingham bow hanging off my ear hair!"
As long as the rubber band isn't pulling on the dog's hair and it's not too tight, it's not really a problem but it makes me think that some dog owners these days aren't respecting the dog for being that, a dog. The dog doesn't care if it's wearing a ribbon, or wearing a bloody tutu for goodness' sake!
However, it's better than seeing an animal neglected.
What is your take on doggy accessories?

This reminds me of the story someone here posted a few days ago on that woman who got arrested for coloring her poodle pink. She says she used beet juice instead of dye, but I didn't quite like her tone when she spoke of using the dog to get charitable donations and that meant the dog was doing its civic duty. It doesn't seem to me that a dog has any civic responsibility beyond not messing up the sidewalks, maybe. I wouldn't put people stuff on any animal except for the stuffed ones, myself.

Yes as cute as it does look I still prefer to see animals look natural, I am sure dressing up pets is for the satisfaction of the owners not the animal but as you say it is better than being neglected, I guess these pets are the lucky one to have such loving owners.

I think dogs are so cute with their ribbons in their hair. I have a male dog but I have bought him a sweater for Christmas, a jacket with pockets for the winter and he also has an Indiana t-shirt, LOL.
I think the accessories for doggies, shows that we really love them and we treat them like part of the family.

I have two dogs of my own and they get clipped every 6-8 weeks. When I first took them to this groomer, she would put a little ribbon on their heads, and I must admit, they did look cute - but I asked her not to do it anymore, because the dogs couldn't care less; it's done for the owners benefit - but not this owner!
I guess it's all a matter of personal choice.

For female dogs I feel as you do, as long as it's not hurting the dog then I'm okay with it but for a male dog, a bow in it's hair? I don't agree with that because it makes him look like a sissy. lol Like he's going to know it or care but still. We don't put bows in little boys hair so why a male dogs? But that's as far as I'd go. I don't agree with dressing an animal up in clothes and such because they don't like it. They try their best to get out of them because they're dogs or cats or what ever they are. Now if it were winter time, a sweater or a coat for them is ok, I'm fine with that so they won't freeze like my Chihuahua and two Chihuahua mixes, they have very little fur to keep them warm so I have little coats for them to wear and they love them believe it or not because they don't get cold.

I think they are adorable with their little bows (if they are girls). My daughter has 2 little pomapoos and she dresses them up all the time (no kids yet). They went to the Halloween party all dressed up (one as a witch and one as a clown). I say "go for it!"

I read your post and all I could think of was my Shih-Tzu I had for years. He was a male and I would take him in to get his hair done. One salon put bows in his hair so it looked like instead of ears he had pig tails. He hated them. He really did, you could tell with how he tried to get them out and the looks he gave us. I got them out after taking a picture. After that I always told workers not to put bows on him otherwise he'd get a complex.
Now I have had dogs who like bows or love the bandannas that can be put around the neck. The bandanna particularly they seem to like better. I've had them prance around doing the "Look at me" walk to show how pretty they are. I guess a lot depends on the dog but for the most part my thought is leave them alone and give them some dignity. Some just seem to go nuts with the frills that the dogs could care less about.

my mum used to work in a cake shop, and every friday would bring a cake home, and our German Shepherd would get the ribbon tied to his collar.
and he used to love it. really used to strut his stuff when he had a bow.
similarly, my dog now acts all smug if he's wearing his coat (very fine coated lurcher, so sometimes needs a bit of protection from cold weather) he also loves wearing his bandana, which he gets to wear when we go for a special day out, like dog shows (just small local charity ones) and going to the beach, or out in town, and gets excited when he gets it put on, as he knows we're probably doing something fun together that day.
while I don't think dogs care what they look like, I do think they like to have anything that makes them feel special. like they've got one up on the other dogs.
another dog we had used to panic if we took his collar off to clean it. he'd be trying to get it back off you until the moment you put it back on him. so I also think dogs have quite a strong concept of ownership.
although I've never encountered a dog that seemed too happy about hairbands. some didn't like it, but none of them seemed excited about having it added.

I like accessories that serve a purpose such as sweaters. Hair ribbons don't serve a purpose. And I have to agree with you I rather see someone do that to their dog than to neglect them.

I think it's stupid and not really cute at all. Poor dogs don't know they look stupid and it makes the owners look a little weird too...

I always find it highly amusing when I see a dog all dressed up, where I live not many do it but every so often you will see one with silly bows or coats on. I have enough to do in a day without having to start dressing my pet up as well, not that I have any at the min anyway. Mind you saying that I did have a persian cat once who had long blue fur, he was a male but one day I put his hair up in lovely bobbles, I showed him in the mirror and he sat and growled at me until I took them out, he was definately not amused.

Personally, I think some people go way overboard.
If you've got a cutesy breed of dog and you have them groomed regularly, I can see putting a bow or somesuch in their hair, but beyond that, I don't know.
Some people just carry it way too far, in my opinion. Their dogs are dressed better than most people's kids (or themselves, for that matter).
There is big business out there if you make clothing items for pets, though. I wish I knew how, because I'd sure cash in on it.

We used to have a poodle that would get groomed and have cute little ribbons in her hair. My Mom would swear that the dog pranced and paraded around like she was the best looking dog in the city. I agree with you, though, I don't really think animals care about things like that like people do. Perhaps the poodle just liked how she smelled or felt better because her coat was thinner for the summer.

Some dog owners view their pets as children rather than pets. They can get carried away in that fantasy. Have you seen some of the outrageous costumes for dogs? I think many of them border on cruelty.
On the other hand, my daughter and her husband have a little dog that comes home from being at the groomer's wearing a new kerchief around his neck and actually does act like he is more proud of himself than on normal days. And once when he had to have all his hair shaved on his torso he acted embarrassed. So I have to wonder if they have a kind of pride.

My chow-chow used prance right after she came from the groomer. I thought she just felt good being clean, until one day I had the groomer cut her in a lion clip (most of the hair gone except for head and a poof on the tail). She would hang her head and just lay around like she was embarrassed by her no hair. This continued until her hair started growing back. So as far as your statement that the dog doesn't know if it's wearing a ribbon or a tutu - I think they might know. They understand a lot more than we give them credit for. My cocker spaniel used to bring me his bandana to put on him if I forgot. He loved having that thing around his neck and he pranced when he had it on. I think like everything else - it can be taken to an extreme - but really if it makes the owner feel better and maybe even the dog - then why not?

I think they are a joke if Im honest, Why does a dog need a ribbon or clothing on???
the dog isnt bothered if it has it on its just the owners being daft as far as im concerned.
