for me, i would have to say shutter, (the thailand version) i think the US version is now showing already in theaters? and the exorcism of emily rose, which is based on a true story, which really made it more scary, i even turned on the lights while i was watching the scary part where they were exorcising her. i was pretty scared too while i watched the blairwitch project but i was only 14 that time, maybe if i get to see that movie now maybe i wont get scared anymore? i define "scary" movies as having a "paranoid" effect on the viewer. myself, for example, after seeing those films mentioned, when its time to go to bed and the lights are out, i keep looking at my back to see if there's "something" behind me. creepy. anyway, how about you, what movies have you watched that gave you the creeps? coz i wanna rent horror movies this lenten season, so i would love to have suggestions from the mylotters.

The eye and the Shutter. these have both sent shivers to my spine! especially the last part of the movie shutter! oh my dad is soo brilliant and i did not expect to see that.
really really scary!
the eye, on the other hand made me scared of getting into elevators for a time alone. haha

Man, I haven't seen the american version of Eye yet, only the Japanese version. Was it really freaky? Shutter definitely looks freaky. I think it's by the same people who made the American Grudge movies and those freaked me out. So, it's understandable that Shutter would do the same.

The sacriest movie i have seen has to be 'The shining'. The isolated hotel gave such a creepy feeling. 'The descent' was pretty scary too. The movie 'stay alive' was also really scary and i wonder why it has not been more discussed as a really scary film.

LOL i havent watched any local horror movies for ages so not really know what to expect with the current tagalog films that are being shown here. but there is a "tiyanak" remake, "tiyanaks" with mark herras, jen mercado, etc. im guessing that you have watched that one. hehe.

you bet yahhh... and those classic pinoy horror films are the most scariest than modern pinoy films even though it doesnt have great special fx etc... but the story and realism is there. and the cast and directors are so professional. not like now even they use cute fx but still they dont scare even the rat at the edge of the theater lol...

emily rose was a good one, and i cant wait to see shutter. the one i'll reccomend tho, is an oldie. The Changeling with George C Scott scared me senseless when i was a kid. havent seen it since then, and hopefully it wont disapoint. i just recently bought the entire Omen series, as well as the new remake, and those also wigged me when i was young.. upon watching them now tho, i was left extremely disapointed wondering what the hell was i so freaked out over. i expected better of the remake, but it was the exact same movie, same scenes, even down to the script almost, just different actors, wish id hadnt bought them now.

oh you shoud have just rented them instead.. im planning to see the US version of shutter as well, to compare which version is better although the asian one is really scary! do not watch it during night time alone with the lights off! LOL that was the scanario when i was watching it and i was really scared.omen was released way back in the 90's if im not mistaken, and we were really young back then so we get scared very easily.. and thank you for your movie suggestions, i will search for it on the net and check them out.

Even though the movie isnt THAT scary, I would have to say the scariest movie I have ever watched is the sixth sense. I have NO idea why. I have definitely watched my fair share of thirlling, edge of your seat, cuddle with that pillow movies. For some reason I just cant finish that movie. Probably has something to do with the fact that i was pretty young when it came out and i first tried to watch it. Some freakkyyy stuff though. :]

I like watching horror films and there are many that have caused me to have to leave the lights on afterwards but most of them are older films. The first one that comes to mind is "The Changling". No matter how many times I see it I still get spooked. Excellent ghost story though. The remake of "The Shining" was another that gave me the creeps. The original was good but the remake was even better. "Stephen King's IT" is one that really scared me. I'm terrified of clowns so this one dealt with one of my fears. "The First Power" was awesome and yeah creeped me out as well but another I'd recommend. The first one to ever scare me was "Friday The 13th". I saw it when I was 12 and I went to camp the next summer. It was still with me when I went there. The part where the hand comes up from under the cot bugged me for a long time. I always made sure I had stuff under my bed so nothing could be under there.

I hope you enjoy them. I know I have :) The Shining was very good but overall I'd recommend the remake over the original with Jack Nicholson. It has a lot more suspense to it an a lot more detail then the original had.

i used to watch horror movies too during the Lenten Season! but when i started to have my own internet connection at home, my movie watching at home has been decreasing a lot. ^__^;; when i was a student and we didn't have internet at home and in the boarding house, i used to watch scary movies during the Lent. i remember i watched The Ring and The Grudge late at night with all the lights out with my landlady. that was an awesome time. i felt goosebumps on the back of my neck and yeah, i kinda had a hard time sleeping.
hey, i've also watched Shutter before. it has a hollywood version?? oh yeah, i think i've read about it in the newspapers. but i'm sure i would prefer the Thailand version like any other Asian movies that i preferred over their Hollywood counterparts. nothing beats the original right? ^__^ i've also watched the Exorcism of Emily Rose! i like that movie too. i wanna watch the uncut version of The Exorcist but i can't find a dvd of it.

my friend told me he was able to find an uncut version of the Exorcist a long long time ago. he doesn't have the vcd now.
hmmm.. yeah, the Ring and the Grudge are not realistic films. but all the same, they were both creepy. just imagine if someone like Sadako would suddenly appear on tv staring and you and slowly crawl out of the tube towards you. ^__^;; and then you try to hide under the table and the instant you duck under, you find the little boy all white with bulging eyes and open mouth.

oh i think we will NEVER find the exorcist DVD here sa pinas, ive never seen old films (the ones from the 70's to early 90's) being sold or rented in the video shops here.. hala, we only have amazon to turn to. heheh. and yeah, the movies that youve mentioned are really scary although i wasnt scared by the grudge and the ring, hehe. not really "realistic" movies, hehe unlike emily rose and shutter, which can happen in real life, diba?

Hostel and the Saw movies. And, here is why. Movies like Cloverfield (which I loved) have no basis in reality. The likelihood of the events in the movie is minimal.
But, as you said about the Exorcist, that stuff can happen. So, in Hostel and any or all of the Saw movies, there are psycho people heck bent on getting their jollies from torturing others which is what makes Hostel and the Saw movies so hard to watch. The scare the crud out of me. Hostel disturbed me for days after I saw it. I couldn't get it out of my head. So, if I could recommend a horror film for you, that would be Hostel. I think there is a sequel out too but, I haven't seen that one yet. And, then I would recommend the Saw movies, of which I think there are 4. I haven't seen the 4th one yet.
If you get them, let me know what you thought of them and I hope you enjoy them...as much as you can enjoy something that scares the heck, heaven and everything in between out of you!

I am not much of a fan of horror movies but I do have some favorites.
The Shining
The Exorcist
The Blair Witch Project
Each one of those movies scared the bejeezus out of me for different reasons. The Shining revealed what a haunting might do to a person's mind and what it might lead him to do. The Exorcist showed what the devil might do if he had the chance. And the BWP brought out all the fears of the unknown. If you have ever been deep in a forest and felt isolated from the world, you can imagine that something like that would happen.

well ive only watched the blairwitch project since the exorcist and the shining are old films and i was renting DVD's the other day and i cant find those movies! the oldest movies i can manage to find were the ones from 1995 onwards.. so hopefully i can find them. anyway, yes i totally agree with you that the blairwitch project was totally scary, i did not show any monster or anything but its more than enough to scare you coz it plays with the viewer's imagination on who or what killed those 3 campers.

I agree. What made that so scary was what you imagined. That's what I don't like about the gory movies. There is not much left to the imagination. They are shocking for sure, but not really that scary.

For me i would have to say it was exorcist. That movie really creeped me out bad. I wasn't so scared during watching it but after it was over i was freaked out so bad that i couldn't sleep until sunrise.

I absolutely love horror movies and I rate them based on how scared I am to stay alone at home or sleep in the dark! I have favorites from my early years to now. Of course, what I used to think were really scary when I was younger, don't seem as scary now, but they left such an impact on me that certain things still freak me out.
Older horror movies that scared the beejeezus out of me:
- Poltergeist. The scene in the first poltergeist where the little boy is in bed and sees the toy clown sitting at the base of his bed one moment and then the clown is attacking him the next, left me with lifelong scars re: clowns. I think they are the freakiest things! And all the mirror scenes in the third poltergeist had me scared to look in mirrors for awhile for fear of what would be reflected.
- It by Stephen King. Another movie that reinforced my fear of clowns.
- Nightmare on Elm Street. This made me afraid to go to sleep and dream. I spent countless nights awake after watching these movies. I think it was only good until the 4th one though. And Wes Craven's New Nightmare was pretty scary too.
I find it's hard to find really good horror movies nowadays. However, the following are my favorite recent horror movies:
- The Ring. This was an excellent horror movie that played with your mind. I had to have a friend walk me to my door and wait til I turned on all the house lights before they could leave - and this was after watching it the second time in theaters.
- The Descent. I think someone else mentioned this movie previously. This was a fantastic movie with no-name actors about a bunch of girls that go spelunking in a cave full of mutant creatures. I was imagining hearing the sounds in the dark for weeks to come that the creatures in the movie made.

thank you for your sugestions, i have already seen the newer movies sugested by other members but i havent seen the descent yet..ooh, iwould love to check that one out. sounds really scary.. i wish i could find the older ones on our local video shop though.. i cant watch movies online coz i only use dial-up connection as of the moment. LOL! i will definitely check out your sugestions. last week i was looking for the DVD of "child's play" and they dont have it! (it was released only in the 90's right?) i hope i get to find nightmare on elm st, poltergeist, new nightmare and it. i have watched the ring, (american version) and it was moderately scary for me. i dunno about the japanese version though.

I'm glad you enjoyed my suggestions! And thanks for reminding me about Child's Play. I remember being scared silly from the first and second Child's play. I watched the Japanese version of The Ring after the American one, so the Japanese version wasn't as scary to me. However, I think it did a better job of explaining the background story of Samara and how she came to be, so it's worth a watch. Happy horror movie watching!

waheheheh! really? are you serious? you were that scared? were you watching that movie at night and you were all alone? im assuming that you watched the japanese version coz many people said that it was more scary than the american one. dont run alone and hide in your backyard, especially at night, coz you'll never know, sadako might appear out of nowhere... she just followed you. LOL

oh so that's why, you were really young back then. i was 18 when it 1st came out, so not really a kid anymore thats why i wasnt really scared.. i watched the american version too. you probably wont be scared when you watch it this time around.. although i dont think "the ring" is based on a true story..

Scary...I am not sure...but one that really FREAKED me out was The Serpent and the Rainbow. Holy moly...still gives me the chills just thinking about it.
I do not watch a lot of scary movies...
I remember watching Jaws and Nightmare of Elm Street as a kid - those were pretty scary then (I haven't seen them for a LONG time).
Psycho and the Shining had their scary moments. And the Silence of the Lambs was pretty freaky too. Pet Semetary and Seven were good too! I also thought The Others, Altered States, and Halloween (at least the first one) were pretty scary.
Have you seen April Fools Day? That is one of my favorites to show during parties. I am not sure why...it is pretty corny...

oh i havent watched april fools day and most of the movies youve mentioned yet coz its pretty hard to find old movies on our local video shops. but i hope ill find them one day.. i watched silence of the lambs before and its 2 sequels and its quite good, not really scary but more like "suspenseful". hehe.

yeah, anthony hopkins was creepy though as he portrays that cannibal role. i think he just ended up in jail on the 2nd sequel and the 3rd explored his childhood as to why he became a cannibal. good movies if you ask me. anyway, thanks for responding and hopefully i can indeed find those old movies, i read in imdb that the shining and psycho were really great. well, the movie posters send the same msg as well, hehe. creepy to look at.

You are right about Silence of the Lambs. It is more suspenseful than scary! April Fool's Day is truly corny. It was made in the early 80's I think. It is not really scary (I do not want to lead you on that way). It is...well...corny. I can't think of another way of describing it. :-)
Thank for responding! I appreciate it! I hope you have a GREAT day and are able to watch your choice of SCARY movies soon!

Movies don't really scare me all that much, but I have had a move or two that has given me a bit of "the chills", so to speak. The last movie that I can remember having that happen was "What Lies Beneath." It's not really that scary of a movie or anything, but something about it just sort of made my skin crawl a little.

my all time fave horror movie is "THE SIXTH SENSE"
i have never been shocked or scared that much till i watched that one (talking about screaming, haha). i love that it is very spontaneous and that it is not like others that you can predict easy. i didnt even realize the whole story till it is almost done so i enjoy it a lot.
i like that it intrigues me the very beginning till the end.
im not a fun of horror movie but this one is one of a kind.
it's just some to me is boring and nothing especial on it most of the stuff you mention, i already watched them and didnt get that scared compared to "the sixth sense"
oh, if there is a 2nd rate one, i also like "the skeleton key" quite interesting to me as well coz my prediction is wrong haha.
anyway, great topic!

I love horror movies, though I must say I need to watch them with company; else I have nightmares. The scariest movies I have seen, must have been the Omen series (rather old shows), the foreign movies (Korean, Japanese, Thai, Taiwanese) like The Phone, Double Vision, Dark Waters, the Red Shoes, etc.

movies dont really scare me. what scares me is the movies that are based on real things, that scare the CRAP out of me.
