Yesterday I washed one of my favorite sweaters. It's 100% cotton with leather buttons...so I didn't put it in the dryer. I was going to lay it flat but hung it over the dining room chair and totally forgot about it! I picked it up off the back of the chair today and there are two big buldges coming out the back where the chair back was....so it looks like I have two horns sticking out the back. I have ocassionally gotten hanger marks in the shoulders of sweaters too....how do I get them out without washing it again and do you think the cotton sweater is ruined? Will it return to it's normal shape if I have to wash it again?

No need to rewash it, just damp it down with cold water and pull it back into shape, then lie it flat on a towel, or something absorbent until it dries. That should do the trick.
Brightest Blessings.

I agree with Darkwing, I'm lazy, so, I would just squirt some water on it from a water bottle, then lay flat. It will go back to the right shape when you wash it again not to worry.

I've done this with cotton in the past. I would wash it again and buy hangers that have clips on the bottom, like for hanging pants. The marks from the clips are alot less noticeable than the shoulder bulges. It shouldn't ruin your sweater but the bulges won't go away until you wash it again.

Try re washing it and laying it flat right away. I think it should return to it's regular shape because it is cotton.

You don't need to rewash it a full cycle. Throw it in the washer with a damp bath towel and on the rinse cycle. This time lay it flat to dry. I fold all my sweaters, that is the only way I have found to avoid hanger marks. Or you might want to try throwing it in the dryer with a damp towel on the air dry or fluff cycle (the cycle that doesn't use heat).
I have used both methods and they both work for me but the dryer is faster.

As long as you use the setting on your dryer that does NOT use heat it will not shrink.

my opinion is that you will need to rewash the sweater and lay it flat and let it dry really. sorry I can't give more information but that is what I would do if I was you hope it works out for you.

I'll try that. It's maddening...I can't believe I left it overnight. It's like all out of shape too because it's so heavy that it pulled down on the sides so if I put it on I have horns coming out the back and the front hangs down way lower then the back!

I'd just throw it in the washer again and lay it flat out on a table or something like that to allow it to dry. Try folding your sweaters instead of hanging them up. That is what I do. If your sweater is able, you could also try to iron it, but it depends on how comfortable you are with an iron and with tring to iron it. I would say take it to a cleaners if you are really worried about it, but there is no reason to spend that kind of money if you can do it yourself.

I think you will need to re-wet it. Wet it, squeeze as much of the water out as you can (without twisting) maybe wrap it in a towel to absorb the water. Then lay flat and reshape.
I wonder if the steam setting on your iron would work...?
