do you look at the keyboard when you type?

I used to be a secretary for 5 years before becoming a teacher. So I can type 65 words per minute without looking at the keyboard. And I was talking about typewritters here... manual and electric.
Then, when I learned to use the computer, my speed increased too. I type while I am reading what I am typing and I also know if I punch the wrong keys and can backspace or delete it without looking too.
I am not bragging. I was just curious is a lot of people here in myLot are like me since I guess we are on the computer all the time to meet our personal quota or otherwise.
Being in the computer all the time gives us a lot of time to practice our typing skill. (I believe so.) That's where I got the skill... practice
How fast can you type? Do you look at the keys when you are typing?

hello ruthinian!
How are you doing?
well, thats realy good that u can type 65 days per minute.
I wish i could do that too:P
I can type i guess maximum 40 words but sometimes i do see thee keyboard when i have to type longer words like "characteristics","infatuations",words like that.
Secondly i mistake a lot while typing,i press the wrong keys even seeing them and have to use back space again n again.
Have gained more speed whil using pc yes it increases your typing skill :) Depends the way you use it.
There are a lot of exercises of typing that i would especially recommend to the new ones because i never tried them and now i am used to use only of my 3 to 4 max fingers the rest are free, instead of using 4 finegrs only my friendz say that while seeing the movement of your hands it seems to be a very fact typing but obviously the end product is very low, with same speed if i use my all fingers it would be even better.
So i would recommened to use those exercises in roder to see how actually we can type in a arranged manner, which key should be pressed by which finger, this initially slow you down but in the end it will benefit you.
I have been using pc since more than 6 years but still i cant type as a 6 years old user should and the reason is only that i used wrong fingers for keys :)
One has to be more structured to get the better results.
Take care !

YUP. It's in the fingers. That's the trick... use all your fingers and you don't need to look in the keyboard because the fingers are assigned to the different keys. That is the reason too why I also know if I typed the wrong keys, because of the fingers. . Your suggestions are good for those who want to learn the skill. Yes, I also used those typing exercises too. It helped me a lot. I recommend them too. Thanks and you take care too.

I take shortcuts that would horrify a teacher and do sometimes look at the keyboard.
*
I used to type at 45 words per minute but I developed corporal tunnel syndrome in both hands and thus developed some bad habits to pamper the aching wrists.
*
I'm a computer junkie and use MyLot for an important extra income. I find it hard to leave the keyboard, so I developed keyboard shortcuts so I can continue to type away. The keyboard shortcuts plus a change in keyboard call for peeks at the keyboard. I now use a keyboard that is designed for corporal tunnel.

I can't spell for beans. I've a disability there. FireFox lets me get away with lousy spelling as it has a spell checker built in. I type my response or discussion, then go back and correct all my spelling errors via Fox plus mouse.
*
I don't know where this lousy spelling comes from. Autism is something I know I have. Mom claims it was an exess of phonics in school. Some of my specialists who examined me when I was younger thought I would never speak or write. As you can tell, I am doing both in prodigious amounts.

Wow, thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it. I learned a lot from your response. Yes, myLot is a good venue to practice typing skill, and yes, with today's technology, everything made easy, even with the spelling. And I am happy to know that you were able to go above your disability. My step-son has autism too and I guess he is doing fine. He is the smartest in his class according to the teacher, to think that he wasn't able to talk till he was 5 years old. Thanks again. take care.

I don't know how fast I could type since I really don't check up on it that much but, as I type this response of mine, I also don't look much on the keyboard and know to delete some wrong spellings when I see them on the screen

That is good. You are fast enough if you don't look in the keyboard. I guess.

I don't look at the keyboard when I type I look at the computer screen at what I am typing that way if I mess up I see the mistake and can correct it right away. I have not taking a typing test in alot time so I am not sure how fast I can type.

Me too, specially when I am typing straight from my idea, I mean when I am thinking. I rather type it than write my ideas down. So I look in the monitor. But if I am typing or copying something out from a book or writting from a paper, I look on the paper while typing then look in the monitor afterwards for corrections.

Hi Ruthinian.
How I wish I can type as fast as you without even looking at the keyboard.
Sometime I don't look at the keyboard while typing but you will see numerous errors in my typing. I have been trying to practice typing without looking at the keyboard but never succeeded. Onlt two of my fingers really functioning in typing and the rest of the fingers are observer. Hehehe....

I work with computer usually, special type the documents. If I type English document, I always type very slowly. Because I can't remember key of letter in keyboard. If I type my country language document, I type faster. My country language has diacritic and I type this kind when I was child. So it's seem my habit.

I use 2 fingers and look at the keyboard, obviously, I didn't practic enough even though i would practice for a couple of hour every day and more on the week end when I was lesrning to type.
I see you made a couple of mistakes...what degree of accuracy do you have 85 - 90%?

Yes, I still make a mistake, im not perfect just fast and by being fast it doesnt necessarily mean that I am flawless too. I think my accuracy rate is between that range. I do review my writings too but most of the time I don't specially here in mylot where, i don't also mind if people make mistake with their typing. But I am careful when I am doing a write up which I post in my other website.

i have been using computer since 10 years and i dont think so that a person whoz using PC since that much time will be seeing keyboard while typing. I dont see keyboard at all , and use both of my hands to type , Even i hardly get a mistake in typing now. It all depends on practice , the more you type the more you will be expert in typing and in speed. You dont need to see keyboard when you are an advanced and gragually your typing speed also increases.

You can increase your typing skill by just getting the hang of it. Just relax and since if you make a mistake you can always delete it or backspace or make the correction. Practice and you will acquire the skill.

Yeah, I type without looking at the keyboard. I use my 10 fingers for typing. It's such a helpful skill which I love so much. I always wonder there are many people who utilize only 2 fingers in typing, and still they can type fast, lol...

LOL. Of course, there are still people who type using their 2 fingers only, my hubby is one of them. I use all my fingers. That's the trick to type fast without looking, right?

Hmm, I can go 54-55 wpm on a typing speed test, but if I'm writing off the top of my head, I think I can go faster, and yes, I no longer look at the keyboard, heheh.
If I need to re-adjust for the DVORAK, because they said that it makes productivity better.... I don't think so. My brain has totally adjusted to the way the keyboard is, now. :)

I am in front of a computer from 12 to 20 hours a day so I have become a touch typist. I only look at my spanish language keyboard, the extra keys trip me up, but the novel I am currently working on has a spanish speakers and names and is set in Costa Rica so I really have to use it.

I don't sleep nearly as much as I would like to sleep. As soon as I get both of my blogs back in visual order with new themes that work right, rather than using freebie themes, I hopefully can add another 90 minutes a day to my sleep. With any luck I won't even dream in code XML code anymore.

i can type without looking at the keyboard you just pick it up naturally when you have been using computers ever since i was young. in fact my keyboard is actually a blank keyboard all the letters are wiped off it so its just buttons so it forces you to touch type. great learning curve.
