While waiting for the school bus, my step-son would play in the front yard for few minutes. Most of the time he would climb the young maple trees and I would always tell him to come down because I was scared that he would fall down and break his neck.
One time, he was playing in the backyard and was climbing the apple tree. I pointed him to hubby and told him to tell his boy to come down of the tree. And he said... "let him climb the tree, he is a kid... didn't you climb trees when you were a kid?" I was surprised by the response and just shut up.
True, my siblings and I would climb trees when we were kids and my mom was scared out of her wits that time and would tell us to come down. But my grandma would tell her the same thing that my husband told me.
Do all kids climb trees? Did you climb trees when you were a kid?

Ohhhh..climbing trees brings back one particular memory!!!!
my sister lives in Bahrein..and when she was in the UK I suggested to her that we go and put some flowers on Dads grave....ok..that was fine...
When we parked outside the graveyard she saw an apple tree...laden with fruit....and the little madam lolol...she watched me put the flowers on while she tried to rattle the branches to get her apples!!!
Oh boy was I embarassed!!!

I really loved climbing trees as a kid and I was afraid of heights! Well, I was afraid of falling from high up, but I'm sure you know what I meant. In spite of that, I still loved to climb. I do think lots of kids enjoy it. You get a sense of accomplishment from doing it, you learn how to reason and think things through and problem solve using your brain. Too much of formal education teaches only linear thinking so being able to do this, on your own, is a great learning experience for kids.

Yes, a lot :):)
I love to climb trees and I even had a favorite spot when I used to visit my aunt. There was a huge tree right beside the house and me and my cousin would love to climb up there and talk. Sometimes we would even take books to read or even pads to draw. We used to stay there for hours.
There was a perfect spot there for us to be comfortable for a long time.
Sometimes I miss that tree LOL

When I was a young boy of 9 years, I climbed up a mango tree in the neighborhood. My peers applauded my upward climb and quite suddenly I lost grip and fell on the ground and broke my ankle. Since than I have never tried to climb even a small fence.

I'm still young, but I remember when I was younger that I always tried to climb trees. The key word here is tried, lol. We live in Florida and palm trees don't really have any good places to hold on. It's hard to shimmy up one when you're a kid, and even if you get up, you can't really go anywhere! Don't worry though, If I had kid, I'd probably be worried about him/her climbing trees as well. You never know what can happen, but I guess it's okay as long as you watch them closely.

I think that it is the job of kids to climb trees and do things that cause most mothers (And Step mothers) to fear for their safety. I also think ti is the job of mothers And step mothers to worry when they see their kids doing daring things. We not only climbed trees but we would hang by our knees. We would see who could get the highest too.
Behind my grandparents house was these hugh round cement cylinders That were put under highways for water drainage. We kids would go out there and play tag on them we would run from one to another and jump if they were a little ways apart. They were hugh fun and dangerous. If our folks knew what we were doing we would have all been tied to chairs. Kids are venturesome and parents worry. It's their job and our job

When I was a kid, I was free to play with my friends in the neighborhood and if I were not scared of heights and a bit clumsy I would have climbed many trees just like my friends did but I remember I only had climbed maybe 2 or 3 low trees. Do you know "Alatires"? That's one, and the other is an old mango tree with low lying branches almost on the ground. I think if I would become a mother in the future, I will give my kids the same freedom to play. However, I will warn them not to climb very high trees. ha! ha! ha!

I did climb trees as a child and still do so as an adult occassionally because I like the stretch. I actually beat my brother at it. One thing though ............. trees are more for lizards than it is for humans and aint fun when you both meet up in a tree. (lol)

I really climbed the trees when I were a kid. That is an interesting experience during my life. You may regard me as a naughty boy, however, acturally, this was natural, because every little boy likes to climb tree to show how powerful they are.Naughty is the typical feature to the small child.
Thanks for sharing this intereting topic with us.
I enjoy it very much.

I've never climbed trees as kid nor did my sisters, but my little cousin has and it just watched him carefully and tried helping him down when he was done. He jumped off so easily, even though it was a little high and he was six. But I've never felt like doing it.

I can't answer your first question about all kids climbing trees...but I can answer for myself and say, I loved climbing the pommecythere tree in our backyard. Needless to say my mom really used to freak out as you mentioned. I loved to just hold on and swing on the branches sometimes and there was this one thick branch that was big enough to sorta lie down on! I loved that!

We grew up on a small farm. We climbed lots of trees. My parents never made us come down. The only things we weren't supposed to climb were the hay bales.
My own kids, especially the boys love to climb trees. I don't usually make them get down unless they are getting too high but it does really scare me!
Their dad is the same way your husband is. He has the "just let them be kids" attitude.

I LOVED to climb the trees when I was a kid. In the field next to me, all of the kids would climb and we would play house and each had our on "bedrooms" in the tree because it was a HUGE, HUGE apple tree split down the center.
There was one time that I was on a different tree in our yard and the branch broke and I slid down and got scraped all the way down my chest, I was like 5 and back then being a girl in the "country" you could go without a shirt without anything being said, but I slid all the way down the tree and my chest and side was all scraped.
Well, years and years later my oldest son wanted to climb a tree and I told him to put on a shirt and he didn't and HE slid down the tree trunk and scraped up his chest. He told me, I will never climb a tree without a shirt on again, I should have listen to you mom.
I still let my younger boys climb the trees in the yard from time to time. Yes, I am scared that they are going to get hurt, my son son was up the street in a tree and jumped from it and broke his wrist, but it is all a learning process and we can't protect them ALL of the time, even though we would love that.
I think of it as a safer way to learn problem solving issues of how to get to that branch safely and if they are with other kids to listen to them telling them which ones are the better ones to step onto. Communication is a real good leason here with climbing trees.
Good exercize also. Gross motor skills and such. What is the difference between a tree and monkey bars?

We had a huge buckeye tree in my backyard where I grew up...in Ohio. One day I was climbing it, like I had so many times before of the years and, I stepped on a branch that had weakend for whatever reason. It broke and down I fell. I landed on my back on the bottom branch and hung there for a few seconds until I could wiggle off of it and fall to the ground, only about 3 feet below. It knocked the wind out of me but, I was fine. But, since then, I never climbed a tree again and probably never will as an adult. I think it actually gave me a small fear of heights. Not like most people who fear heights. I can handle heights in an airplane or in a tall building. Mine is actually a combination fear of heights and tight spaces. And, by itself, I am neither claustrophobic or acrophobic. I just can't handle a tight, high space at the same time. So weird huh?
But, plenty of kids climb trees and never fall. It was just my dumb luck that that particular branch had gotten weak and I stepped on it in its last moments of strength.
