Have you ever bought something special, then it broke not long after?

On the weekend I bought a special bracelet for my best friends 30th birthday. I was so excited that I found the perfect gift for her, she loved it. However at the party she wore it for a few hours, then we found it broken on the ground. At first I was not worried as I thought the jewellers would repair it free as I think it was manufacture problem. Took it back to the shop and they said that they would not fix it for free as it looked like it got caught on something, to fix it will cost $80. I am so annoyed as it cost me $120 to buy, $80 is nearly just as much as what I paid for it. So have to try and find cheaper jeweller to repair it.
Have you got any similar experiences where you bought somethng and it broke? Did they shop return your money or give you new product?

Aw- that stinks!!
I don't know that "special" fits here...but I recently bought a middle of the line (ie moderately expensive)cappuccino machine from the thrift store- it hadn't ever been used and was still in the original packaging. I got it for over half off the cost of retail. I used it all of three times and it fell on the floor and the top front part shattered. It still functions but I had to tape the cover back together. The part that broke covers the electronics and is held on by special screws that I can remove myself with a special tool. But, I called the company and they will not sell that part to a consumer- only to a small appliance repair shop. There aren't any shops in my area. sigh
I have decided when I go to the city (a 5 1/2 hour trip), I may check there if they can fix it...but I have also warned hubby I may be just buying a new one...a more 'upper part of the middle of the line one." lol (HEY- they don't have an lol smiley...?!?) Here's to hoping that one doesn't end up on the floor! (Which shouldn't happen as I will have real countertops by then!)

THat does suck, your machine breaking after only using it three times. I am glad though that you can still use it. Shame that the company will not sell the part to the customer. If you were to drive 5 hours away, you might as well by new one, lol. Yeah I agree they need a lol smiley, but this one here is close enough for now -

Sorry to hear about what happen to your gift to your friend. I don't have a specific example, but I know I've had this happen to me on more than one occasion. It's very sad when this happens especially when it's something that you've really wanted to buy. Sometimes, if it wasn't my fault that it broke, I can get a replacement on the product. But, sometimes I can't. This is especially true on wearable items like jewelry.

Hi, thanks for your response. It is a shame when soemthing you really liked gets broken. Just wish that the bracelet did not cost more then 2/3 of the price of the bracelet. I could handle paying $20 to fix it, but $80 is so steep.

Sorry to hear about your China tea cups, it is a shame you did not get to use them for a while before they broke.

Sorry to hear about your watch, have you taken it to the jewellers to see if they can repair it? Hopefully they can, I can understand how upset you would be as it is a sentimental gift.
