Do you think that the 'harry potter' movies are half as good as the books?

I am a fan of Harry Potter books. But i think that the movies except the fourth one dont do any justice to the books. I know the most of the books are around 500 pages long and cannot be fully representated, but still the movies should be good enough for a person who has not read these books to follow whats going on. Dont you think so?

hello there to U...i'm a Harry Potter fan too...i love all it's movie episodes and versions...reading Harry Potter books is really cool too aside from watching it in movies... Well, basically, that's really true, the 500 pages long Harry Potter books cannot be fully represented in a movie...but it's really a good thing that they make it in a movie version too... Those people who haven't read the whole book and chapters of Harry Potter, they might somehow know what's the story of Harry Potter...and they get to know it and understand it... There are people who doesn't love reading but just loves to watch movies...so making Harry Potter's story in a movie version is really cool and good for those people who even don't know who Harry Potter is, and also for those who haven't read the Harry Potter book... Well so far, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" was really a cool movie...although it has some different version from what the book really says...but i really do appreciate it... It's a good kind of movie to watch for especially for those who are so fanatic of Harry Potter...well, good for you, because you're a fan of Harry Potter...it's really cool to know...this is a cool discussion... Have a blessed day ahead of U...have a blessed Holy Week...may GOD BLESS U & UR family always!!!

Thanks man. Cool to find another Harry Potter fan.I know that the movies are the only way by which people who dont like to read can enjoy Harry Potter. But alteast they should be able to followthe story properly. I guess those who watch only the movies would not understand why Harry Potter is so popular. Have a nice day..

I like the books better too. I think you're right that they're just too long to be adequately represented in cinematic format unless we want to have four hour movies and try getting ten year olds to go to a four hour movie. Dances with Wolves was bad enough and I'm a grown up or was at least a teenager at the time. Overall I think you can get a feel for the books from the movies but if you want the whole experience, read the darn book!

You are right they cannot be fully represented in the movies although for the most part I think they have done a very good job of it. The only exception to that is "The Goblet of Fire". They left a lot out of that one that really should have been in there. Other then that though I think they have done well with the movies and I can't wait to see the last three. If people can I would recommend reading them as well. They are excellent books with a lot to offer.

I agree it can make visualizing the characters much better. I know after seeing Chamber of Secrets I could really visualize Mrs. Weasly and when I read "The Order of the Phoenix" I could hear her voice when she talked. Very distinctive over all. I've known people to just watch the movies and not have a problem with them but who knows if that will be true with the later ones.

I too would recommend the books. I think for people who have read the books it is a treat to visualise them on the big screen. But for the people who havent the movies are really difficult to follow. Several of my friends have watched only the movies and they dont like harry potter.

I agree the first two movies i liked but as the series progressed the content for the movies were too much so the scenes were short and hectic. Also they couldnt include all the scenes. So a movie goer who has not read the books wont understand all that is happening in the movie.

I only read the first Harry Potter book and I thought they did a decent job translating it to the big screen. Most movies, however, don't do the book justice. I think books transport you like no movie can. There are so many details and intricacies to a story that just don't translate. Also, I think stories create a different picture in each person's mind so what the director or producer got out of the book is probably not what others imagined when they were reading it.

I liked the first movie too. It was the first time the events and palces in our imagination was put visually. I guess as the book was smaller than the rest it was easy to do so without missing any major events. From the 3rd movie onwards important events had to be ignored by the movies due to the size of the books.

I'm not a fan beause I have never read his books. I also have not looked at any of his movies. Honestly I really do not care too much about this character. Thats my opinion...lol..

Ya mate, everyone has their own opinions. But you are missing something by not reading the books. This is my suggestion. Take it or leave it.

I read about half of the first book. I found it uninteresting. I thought the "Series of unfortunate Events" series was much better, Although the movie rather sucked. I have seen bits of the HP movies and they don't interest me either.

Lol, I might, but if something doesn't grab me right away then I can be put off it. Although I have watched entire movies before just hoping that they would get better. They usually don't. But one tip when it comes to movie/books. If possible see the movie first. It's always better that way. A movie is more like an introduction. Then when you read the book you already know who the characters are and where they are. I know it takes away the imagination part but hey, nothing's perfect.

I would prefer reading the books first. If I watch the movie first it would take the interest of the book. Even if the movie is very good I wouldnt feel like reading the book. Even though i like reading a lot. I guess i would prefer reading something new.

Exactly my sentiments. The movie can not capture the mgic on camera nad plus due to time and technology constraints , they have left out a lot of things from the book. Same thing I found with the movie Lord of the Rings too. Sme movie makers just destroy the whole book by their unclear and hurried descriptions.

plus the technologyu is not that advanced to carry out the extremes of human imagination. add to it the time constraint a movie maker has.

Ya, the moviemakers do sometime depict their own way of thinking and imagination in the movies they make which may be very different from the books. I guess most book lovers will be disappointed with that.

They are on two different levels, the movies cant follow the books exactly or else they would be 6 hours long each. And in order to make the movie make sense some things from the plot need to be changed. Otherwise the changes to the plot would change the whole story. And the dobby thing, it's gonna cost way more money to have to have a computer generated house elf for something as simple as handing harry gillyweed as apposed to having neville do it. So I'm sure the movie company wants to save money. So if you're going to compare the two (books and movies) the books are better because there are more detail to certain things and more action, BUT if you think of them on different terms the movies are freakin awesome also.

I understand what you are saying, the movies do cost a lot and it may not be practical to reconstruct all the stuff from the books. Special effects wise the movies are really good. I guess it is not wise to expect the movies to be as good as the books.

Ya reading is much better. Keep up the suspense about whether Harry lives or not with your daughters and they would eventually read the books. Have a nice day.

I some of the movies I wish they would add in scenes that where in the book. I was really upset about how they introduced cho chang in the film. I wish they had done it better and correctly.

The first movie is the only one I really like. I like the way most of the actors play their characters in the other movies, but I hate how much of the books gets cut out. What really gets me angry is after listening to all the book fans say they were disappointed in the movies, instead of making a long movie for last book, they are cutting the movie up into two 105 minute movies (approximately) so they can just charge us double for one final go round...
@arjun999 (1004)

Ya amn, i too liked the first one. If the two movies are just 105 minutes long as you say then the whole idea of splitting it is of no use. As you say its just for charging extra. Have a nice day mate.

Movies can rarely cover the entirety of a book. The Harry Potter movies have been very enjoyable. I think Peter Jackson's "Rings" series is one of the best movie adaptations of books.

For me, movie version is nice because its really based on jk rowling herself. of course she is always work together with the director and producer, how to present the best picture for harry potter movies. Book also nice, but its more based on our imagination, we are reading it and we're imagining it, how the story begin in its end... yeah... actually in the movie not all parts are represented, but its nice also. Before i prefer to read the novel before watch them, but since i'm busy with my lab class, i have no time to finish the novel until now... so i prefer to watch the movie...

I agree the movies don't do justice for the books. In fact with the last couple of movies, I was disappointed. I felt they left a lot out and changed too much. Sometimes I wondered if I'd enjoyed it better by watching the movie first, which I could never of done. I know its hard to put it too screen, but I feel they could of done better. My hubby hasn't read any of the books and had a really hard time following the last couple of movies. Me and our daughter were explaining things to him the entire time. Don't get me wrong though the movies were good, but they could of been better in my eyes. There were things I hoped would be in the movie and though were important enough not to leave out, but I ended up being disappointed.

Yeah, books are always better. I guess they could make a high budget mini-series instead of movies so as not to leave any important parts.

Some important events in the books are not shown in the movies from the 3rd movie onwards. If you are a book lover you will like it much better.
